So much for all those tool bags who said that demand would taper off after an initial rush. It appears to be gaining a little bit of steam.

How do you gather it is gaining steam? Do you have some data on month by month sales?

It's in the article.

First million sold in 28 days. Second million sold in less time. Thus, sales have accelerated.

I was looking for Apple's figures, not what has been deduced. I'm guessing Apple hasn't released anything specific yet.

This is most likely due to the new countries it is being released.

Exactly. You never buy a 1st gen apple product. Wait until 3rd or 4th gen.

Some of us will be dead that by time. Who knows, one of us could get hit by a bus tomorrow.

If I have the money and I like something, I'm going to buy it. Doesn't matter if it's first generation, second or whatever.

I know this guy who keeps waiting for the new generation before buying anything, and the thing is, this moron never ends up buying anything. By the time the third generation comes out, we all know that the fourth generation is right around the corner, and it will have these great new features not yet available on the third generation, so he waits and waits and waits in an ongoing pathetic cycle. Meanwhile, I'm happily using my devices for years and years, while the guy that I know, sits around twiddling his thumbs and keeps waiting and making poor excuses and reasons to not buy yet.

HLdan: Because only positive opinions matter. ;)

The word "magical" should just be removed entirely. I don't ever recall any of the latest medical technology being regarded as "magical" but somehow a tablet is. I'm thinking they couldn't think of anything better.

Ha ha, I see the sarcasm. :D Negative as well as positive opinions matter, but HERE on MR, it's different and I'm sure you know this. The iPad got a lot of hate and still does from the naysayers. They wish it would die a fast death. I've already seen some posts on this thread from haters. Why should their opinion matter when it's nothing but hate?
If a person has an "opinion" that's fine but what's the point of the opinion saying, "FAIL, FAIL, FAIL, THE IPAD WILL FAIL". That's not an opinion, that's pure ignorant hate. We don't need that here and those opinions don't matter.

Justified? Maybe, but definitely good for Apple.

It's funny.... when folks do so much naysaying about a device they hope
for it to fail so they will be justified. They are upset because they
choose not to get one and they want others to follow in their path because
it will somehow make them more comfortable in their decision.

Conversely, some choose to make the purchase but hope others will
follow along so they feel justified in their decision and won't be the target
of the ridicule by the formerly mentioned groups in forums and the media.

Ultimately those who love or hate the product do not change their minds
when it succeeds or fails. But, when it comes down to it, its your money
and the decision should be a personal one and you should feel free to make
it without worrying about what others may prefer. Nobody is wrong for
buying or not buying. However all those folks who went about claiming
what a failure the iPad would be just made themselves wrong -- not in their
decision to not purchase one, but in their proclaiming that Apple had
failed. Clearly Apple has not failed -- I cannot remember the last device
to sell 3 million units in 80 days (has that ever been done?).

I bought an iPad and my only justification for it is that out of the box it
does things for me in a way that a laptop or iPhone could not do. Each
day it gets better as new apps are released and will improve again this
fall with iOS4. The thing is always on and ready to go. I love it.

And I too am awaiting the next version of iPad. I will almost certainly
upgrade and my current 32GB WiFi+3G unit will either go to my wife or
become one for shared family use. My kids have taken to iOS devices so
quickly and are learning much and having fun with the many education
apps available. I wish I could afford one for each member of my family.

So much for all those tool bags who said that demand would taper off after an initial rush. It appears to be gaining a little bit of steam.

No kidding. I know several people that are waiting to get one until after they get their new iPhone 4...like me!

As more countries are added sales momentum will continue to increase.

Interesting....I wonder if this is carving out a new market, cannibalizing netbook sales or cannibalizing MB & MBP sales? I guess we'll find out when Apple releases subsequent earnings statements.

In the meantime (and I've said this before), I think there is a lot of product maturity to look forward to with the iPad. Said another way, I think there's a bright roadmap for this product.

If you believe that, then IMHO I think people would be wise to wait a few product generations before taking the plunge. Think about it, there will be more apps, faster processors, better screens and I'd bet $10 you'll see at least a front facing camera just like the new iPhone 4G for video chatting among many other advances. To me, that's worth the 12-24 month wait.

If by "Full Internet" you mean Flash, I can say that I hardly miss it. There really isn't as much flash as people seem to think there is. Besides, it will fade into the distance as more and more people move away from the "Plug-in" internet and onto forward moving web standards.

I've browsed the net on my iPad every day since I got mine on May 28th (Canadian release date) and there has only been one website that I visited where the website was unusable due to the iPad's lack of flash. It was a restaurant who did up their entire site in Flash. Even then, I have always personally felt that an entirely Flash-driven site was a bad idea (and this was years before the iPad came out).

Interesting....I wonder if this is carving out a new market, cannibalizing netbook sales or cannibalizing MB & MBP sales?

Well, I can't speak for others, but it has definitely replaced my XP netbook. I've already sold it.

You got some balls i have to admit

This device is fail...

3 million might have bought and there might be another 10 who are queuing up - but that doesn't mean that device does anything original and useful... apart from filling Apples bank account of course :)

Once device is able to support full internet available today and once it has dozen or so of "killer apps" then maybe, just maybe...

Until then big massive yaaaaawnnnn...

Posting this on this forum... Taking the time to log in and to spit venom... Quite amazing... And adding that there is no "killer app"... Do us a favor and define what a killer app is? Because unless your comment is backed up by some fact and an explanation it remains pure BS by my standard... Anyways, keep on doing this, we love trolls here... Always a good reason to laugh!

Last question though: are you a masochist and own a mac?

So if I own an Apple product then I can no longer think critically?

I still maintain that the iPad is not magical or even revolutionary. I've played with one and it can be useful, but magical?!? Of course if you say it often enough then it creeps into the public consciousness and people will believe it, but that doesn't make it so.

A laser-retina projection system with thought control *that* would be revolutionary.

Magical does seem a bit extreme. It is a bit of a revolution though, even if it is just one of many tablets in the revolt. The tablet has arrived and there will be many more to follow. The shift from the desktop to the laptop to the palmtop is a revolution. Things change.

The shipping times are still lagging and finding a store with good stock is very difficult. I had to wait a week at my local Apple Store before I could get one for my dad for his birthday...they couldn't keep them in stock long enough for me to pick one up. Again...as more and more people use this - the wider spread the device will become. Just today I was in a meeting at work and one of the executives was using one to go through email...iPad's and iPhones are the preferred device at my job. Other people were eyeing it enviously when they compared his email experience to the rest of us using smart phones.

Yeah right. You couldn't be further from the truth on that one.

Well go spend $1800-$2800 for an HP tape back up to back up a $100 hard drive if you wish... I spent $85 for a terrabyte usb drive. At the office we use NAS. All cheaper and more efficient. With hot swap NAS you can take the back ups off site.

(Yes, you can still get 80 gig tape for $600, but come on 80 gig ? $600 ?)

Sales/Production Graph

Production rates are improving pretty dramatically. Looks like they started at 26k per day and are now running at 45.5k per day.

Let's do some rudimentary mathematical calculations shall we? 1 Million in 28 Days. 3 Million in 80 days. 28 * 3 = 84. Er go, the rate at which iPads sold from day 29 to day 80 was ever so slightly higher than the rate at which they sold in the first 28 days.

I did my part.

The iPad is just an incredible device for consumption of content. Internet, music, video, whatever. My Macbook Pro has been seriously neglected since I got this thing.

interesting

i find it interesting that they keep announcing these milestones. its like they are trying to drive up the stock, darn wish i had stock

I pads are showing up everywhere. I was in court this morning to be a whiteness in a misdemeanor trial and a cop had the ipad.
All you naysayers are pathetic in the way you wrote off the ipad thinking if it didn't run full OSX, print have 1080 and an i7 chip is was destined for failure. Its success just goes to show how little most of you armchair pundits know about what the general tech buying public wants.
Apple is the yard stick in the tech arena.
Next year ipad will have retina display(crossing fingers), camera, more ram. And the ones that bought the latest generation ipad will upgrade. They'll have a year to have fun fun fun and then save save save for the next ipad.
