I'm looking forward to all the ridiculous interpretations of what modular means getting reposted ad infinitum.

The magic is gone at this company.

Rather than surprise and delight, they've disappointed so many times that they feel guilty enough to come out and tell people what's in the product pipeline.

Imagine the product introductions years ago... not a single thing mentioned before the curtain was lifted. Now we have a circus sideshow.
I see your point but the message was loud and clear at Apple how pissed Pro users were. They at least are giving us a reason to hold on to Apple. The lack of updates and disregard for desktops are just criminal.

Phil Schiller 2013: "Can't innovate my ass!"

Phill Schiller 2017: "Sorry."

Seriously though, I appreciate them realizing their mistake, and admitting it, even though it took a long time. I'm really looking forward to seeing what a base model modular Mac Pro might entail. If I can get in the door with six cores, 32GB RAM, solid GPU and 512GB SSD for $2999 by early to mid 2018, then it's worth the wait. I could even get by with 16GB and upgrade it myself. Hopefully the 5K display is only $999, as prices will fall over the coming year. But even $1199 wouldn't be horrible for an Apple-branded, beautiful display when compared to that LG turd.
Well said.

Beyond their realization that this nMP design not as functional as they'd hoped, perhaps the constructive criticisms from last Fall and the competition trying to woo that market is what finally lit a fire in the labs at Cupertino? In that sense, good on :apple: to admit their failings in the Mac end of things.

I actually believe Phil here (though having the Hardware VP present helped sooth my cynicism.:D) I am thrilled I won't have to switch and will wait it out. I've been pondering more design/art/editing.

It will be nice to see them do right by the community that kept them afloat for so very long.

And -yay!- Mac news. :)

The modern G4 Cube.

Still, they've accepted the design decisions they made didn't pan out and they're moving to a more expandable architecture going forward.

Well, they did include lots of Thunderbolt ports after waiting so long to do so, with the super-futuristic MDP configuration, which is the future of… *whisper* *whisper* Wait, what? USB - what?

Wow. Even the ADC port went through more than one product cycle, didn't it?

It isn't often that Apple pre-announces new products in its pipeline, but there were growing concerns that Apple no longer cared about professional users, and this is Apple's way of proving otherwise.

Apple stressed that it remains committed to the Mac and pro users throughout its entire media briefing.
So, Apple does care about the pro-user?

The Mac Pro went 1,202 days without an update prior to today's spec bump, per the MacRumors Buyer's Guide.
Actions speak louder than words...
the bigger news was that it's working on a "completely rethought" Mac Pro that will feature a modular design.

I really like the original MacPro/PowerMac G5 design. As someone that has own both, they are a little big, but really easy to upgrade.

My 2006 MacPro 1,1 is still running great today, as it is my children's computer to use. They use it for homework, videos, and games. It runs World of Warcraft really well considering it is 11 years old. It would be nice for Apple to get back to making some Mac upgradable, and not all with soldered parts.

With all the recent changes with the Mac line, I am strongly considering going the Hackintosh route with my next Mac, or maybe leave Apple all together.
Schiller also apologized about the current Mac Pro's lack of upgradability and expandability
Apple leadership apologetic? I wonder what is going on at Apple?

Phil, words are cheap, lets see something happen.

Shouldn't the word in the headline be "Assures", not "Ensures"?

I don't think so. Assure is usually used with a person as the object. He assured us that he was committed to pros. It means "to make someone confident of something".

Ensure on the other hand means "to guarantee something" and it does not take a person as an object. He ensured that he was committed to pros.

Good news I guess for those waiting for new Macs, but I already went ahead and bought my Windows 10 system. I couldn't wait any longer.
Good thing because you would have had to wait another year. What are their employees doing? Cooking lunch?

You're more generous than I am. The 2013 Mac Pro was a mistake and a disappointment the minute it was unveiled, and almost everyone knew it immediately. So is it good that they finally acknowledge it? Sure. Am I going to give them much credit for it 3.5 years later (3.5 years in which they've literally not touched it but continued to sell it at the exact same price as that ill fated day in 2013)? No, not particularly. This would have been a good acknowledgment in 2014. And we're STILL probably a year away from a proper replacement!

Sounds promising. Big of them to admit their mistake. Still have to wait what they will release before I will be a fanboy (again)

3K for that? That would only be worth it if it was dipped in gold...
High end i7 and Xeon processors are $700-$1100+. 64GB of Ram is $500.. almost double if you want ECC. M.2 NVMe storage is about $500 /TB I can top $2500 off newegg before case and power supply... and then add Apple Tax.

I would like to see a "cheaper" Mac Pro that stepped into Mini replacement too. But Thunderbolt 3 is a given, so that's limits CPU choices to Intel's built-in sets.. which are VERY expensive high end kit. Chips with enough PCIE lanes to feed that are Expensive. Video cards that output to USBC are non-existent outside a handful of specialty cards that are basically ugly hacks, so whatever Apple does at minimum is highly customized to them.

Who gives a crap about the 'surprise' element. That lasts for a day. What we need to know if we should look to buying a windows workstation or not. Now that it seems Apple is still in the desktop game, I can relax and wait, rather than wonder.

It gives me happiness knowing that you can relax and wait. For the rest of humanity, surprise and delight is the very basics of marketing over priced items to consumers. Without the magic, this company would be no different than Samsung. The founder believed in the theatrics and secrecy that led to the comeback of this company.

Opinions are like butt holes. Everyone's got one, and they almost always stink.

2013 after release:
"Okay guys let's get working on the updates!"
About 3 days later:
"Oh **** it's overheating and throttling"
3 days later:
"No prob we can fix this, the trashcan design is sound"
cue sticking their heads in the sand as to the fact that the trashcan design is NOT SOUND
2016:
"**** it, let's make a new one."

This won't cheer anyone up, bless 'em. You can't please everyone. Why do you think Apple concentrate on iPhone? Oh yeah, it makes the most money...
