It does? I thought it worked between iPhone and iPad too, without needing a Mac at all. Is that not accurate?

It did in the betas but not in the GM... the same thing happened last year with iOS 7 and iCloud Keychain which works phone to phone or phone to iPad as well as phone/ipad to mac but the feature was taken out of the iOS 7 GM and then released across all devices simultaneously when Mavericks and iOS 7.02 came out so everybody got it at the same time.

Essentially because these functions are all shared across iOS and OS X they are protecting themselves from any remaining beta OS X issues with these components potentially breaking released iOS functionality... release it all at once for both and it _should_ all work nicely.

Whew that was a close one, glad they yanked it, can't wait to be seen running around my neighborhood with the 6+ sticking half way out of my fanny pack...

JK. I actually did get the 6+ and really don't feel that my decision making for ios8 hinges on health kit. SMS relay is awesome and I'm sad it won't be there right away but truly that will seem more useful once Yosemite is released and iCloud drive, I'm sure for some that's a bummer but dropbox, copy, and google drive work more than sufficiently for me.

Friday can't come soon enough, I very well might tackle the Fed Ex guy.

:D

Perhaps you count the tackling as part of your strength and explosive cardio work out. Depends how long the FedEx guy puts up a fight. #

I'm guessing there was a potential privacy issue... Apple is touchy enough on that to be worth pulling a feature and apps for.

IMHO, Apple should've launched iOS and Yosemite at the same time, as well as the Photos app for Yosemite.

In the interim, 6/6+ gets a 7.1.3? Seems reasonable to me. Either that, or allow for a way to support current apps using iCloud Docs & Data to keep in sync with 10.7-10.9 until Yosemite, but allow iCloud Drive.

I do think Apple could've handled this fall's launch releases a bit better. Reminds me a bit of 2012/iOS6, when 6.0 had a few bad bugs at launch, including an issue with verifying WiFi networks on Apple's end. That was also a sloppy launch, IMHO.

Oh good lord, you can't be serious with that spin.

No. Maps worked fine. There was no software problem. They only had issues with the accuracy and completeness of mapping data...which is something only time can solve. Just like Google Maps back in the day compared to what it is now.

Complaining about the SMS relay "delay" is dumb as obviously it is a feature that requires Yosemite which is not available at this time.
This. SMS Relay and iCloud Drive don't really work without Yosemite anyways so why would they release them now? "Here's a feature that you can use if your're a developer or beta tester." Better to highlight them with the release of Yosemite next month.

Apple's dedicated page for continuity is saying otherwise.
Having a conversation with friends and family who don’t use an iPhone just got much easier. That’s because you can now send and receive SMS and MMS text messages right from your iPad or Mac. So when a friend texts you from any kind of phone, you can respond using whichever device is most convenient. You can also start a conversation from your iPad or Mac by clicking a phone number in apps like Safari, Contacts, or Calendar. http://www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/continuity/

Everybody is happy. Apple users because they get a new OS and Android trolls because they get to do their favourite thing.

Actually, with iOS 8 you're supposed to be able reply to SMS or answer calls on your iPad if your iPhone is near it. For this reason alone, SMS Relay shouldn't have been delayed to match OSX's release (unless it's actually buggy)

iDevices syncing iMessages isn't SMS relay. SMS relay is the ability for iMessage on your computer to sync/reply to non iMessage, messages.

I didn't mention iMessage anywhere in my post, did I? SMS Relay is supposed to work with iDevices as well for regular SMS messages.

In that line of thought, iCloud Drive should've been delayed as well

Kind of wish it was. The average user doesn't realize that many apps that sync with the desktop will be broken if you upgrade to iCloud Drive right now.

Is there some magical way it was supposed to work other than the iMessage app? SMS relay is a part of the iMessage app so yes you did mention it. Maybe you should know what you are talking about before posting. See below...

How to activate SMS relay

Let's begin with the new iThing, SMS Relay, which lets you access messages sent across your cellular/mobile network in iMessages on your iPhone, iPad and your Mac.

To activate this you must open Settings>Messages and choose the "Text Message Forwarding" option you'll find beneath the iMessage switch. "Allow your iPhone text messages to also be sent and received on other devices signed in to your iMessage account."

Now you get to choose those devices you wish to enable for the feature. You will be asked to validate these requests on each device.

So a map app that is inaccurate is fine? Wake up... The maps fiasco was a legit screw up

You still don't seem to get the point. Let me simplify it

1- SMS relay was delayed to match Yosemite's release
2- SMS relay DOES NOT require a Mac to work

Why the hell was it delayed? SMS Relay could have been working on iOS 8 day-one so that I could send text messages from my iPad.
