…when 4 million+ iPhone 6 / 6 Plus users all try to activate their phones at the same time.

This seems reminiscent of when the 3G phone was released. Device update, OS update and cloud services all at the same time. There was a lot of FAIL then.

That was the day I spent 9 hours in the Bullring Apple Store and still ended up walking away with a non-functional iPhone. :(

icloud drive= NOT READY
icloud photo library= NOT READY
SMS relay= NOT READY
photos for OS X= NOT READY
Health Kit= NOT READY

If major features aren't available at launch, they should have just pushed the launch back or not included them till a 8.1 update.

I would say this is Apple's sloppiest release to date. Bit off more than they can chew

Mostly everything you just listed is not delayed, just waiting for Yosemite to come out.

You'd prefer they release them with issues? What would your alternative suggestion be?

That seems to be the way the rest of the world works. Release buggy code, and patch constantly as new issues arise. I hate that. I would rather wait for it to work than deal with nagging stupid issues.

----------

You forgot OSX 10.11 = NOT READY
That is why most of the list isn't available, because Yosemite is not being released until Oct

My main disappointment is that I installed the Yosemite consumer beta on my mac last night just so I'd be ready to try some of the new features when iOS 8 was released today. Seems like there'll be nothing to try out!

Oh well....Yosemite is still kind of cool and the install went fine.

Apple should go back to the Steve Jobs way. Being even remotely transparent opens the door for idiots to create bad press by constantly opening their mouths. I would delay his app and additional month just because. They call him as a courtesy and that good deed is repaid how?

SMS Relay, iCloud Drive and now HealthKit all delayed.

Way to go Apple.

Actually, iCloud Drive is NOT delayed. Developers are suggesting you hold off on upgrading it until Yosemite releases, because once you upgrade, devices prior to iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 will not have access to it, resulting in an inability to sync.

Holds true for your iPhone backups, too. iTunes 11.4 in OS X 10.9 will not properly recognize an iOS 8 device with iCloud Drive.

This. SMS Relay and iCloud Drive don't really work without Yosemite anyways so why would they release them now? "Here's a feature that you can use if your're a developer or beta tester." Better to highlight them with the release of Yosemite next month.

Right, I have a dev account. Updated my Macs primary partitions to Yosemite last night, to be ready. It all works fine. Updated my iCloud to iCloud Drive as well. Will be no real issues.

Though I do think that they should have tried for the two OS updates to be delivered together, since there was such a connection.

Oh wonder it doesn't work on iOS < 8

Not the same. That doesn't do SMS relay, actually. Try sending an SMS from your iPad to someone who doesn't use iMessage. Won't work (at least pre-iOS 8 it won't).

Maybe because it's an iOS 8 feature which requires that both devices run iOS 8.

And it does work. Use it all the time and it's quite nice to have.

I'm not surprised. iOS 8.0 is rough around the edges! Lots of little glitches.

What do you mean, it’s rough around the edges? I consider iOS 8 to be the bug fix release of the horrible iOS 7. After one year with countless bugs and glitches that never got fixed I was hoping iOS 8 could become what iOS 7 never was: a real Apple quality OS.

Now that every new feature has been delayed, I hope they will go into full bug fixing mode!

OK, it looks as though the app in itself - Healthkit will be included in ios8 release but any apps that were to integrate with Healthkit have been pulled.

Am I reading this right? And is the healthkit app in itself functional without third party apps?

People are of course going to complain, but this is not that bad. It sounds like they may have found a security flaw or something. I'd rather them pull apps and disable the functionality then put user data at risk.

Actually, with iOS 8 you're supposed to be able reply to SMS or answer calls on your iPad if your iPhone is near it. For this reason alone, SMS Relay shouldn't have been delayed to match OSX's release (unless it's actually buggy)

So what about all of the iPhone 6/6+'s that are already loaded with iOS 8? Sorry, your phone pre-orders have been delayed a week? Guess the engineers are going to have to work a couple of late nights!

I think you've misunderstood - it's third party apps that are being pulled, not the iOS native app

the Photos for OS X :apple: said @ WWDC the Photos.app will be "ready" early 2015 ... So :apple: already announced that "delay" is coming .. SMS "delay" apple pulled back into "Beta" of bugs and released dev notes on it, Same with iCloud photos... The only "sudden" pull back into is HealthKit so close to Public launch. HealthKit Back in Beta is surprise to me but not a reason not to install IOS 8 right away ..... I'm IOS 8 ready to install ..

Can I get an Amen !!!!

Amen

This iOS 8 release is such a cluster ****.

Healthkit has now been disabled and apps that use them have disappeared from the App Store until Apple fixes a last minute issue.

iCloud Photo Library has been pulled from the GM and is now labeled Beta.

Continuity and SMS Relay have been delayed (probably until Yosemite launches).

iCloud Photo Drive isn't ready if you use corresponding apps on a Mac. Devs recommend you wait until Yosemite launches or you won't be able to access your data on your Mac, since it basically closes off.

Photos for iOS will work better once Yosemite version launches. But as have no, there's no way to get your photos to your computer wirelessly. I guess you can fall back on connecting your phone to the computer and do it the Pre Mobile Era.

So basically all the major features of the OS have been delayed for some reason or another. Apple should have delayed this a month.

It doesn't matter to me though. My iPhone 6 Plus won't arrive until sometime in November even though I had my order in 40 minutes after it going live, 35 of those minutes trying to get on the damn website. By then, all the bugs should be worked out and features fully functional since Yosemite will be out by then.

Apple really should have pushed harder to get iOS 8, Yosemite, and Photos app to launch all at the same time for a more seemless experience. The House of Apple is crumbling.

Looks like my iPhone 6 will just be getting better with age :D

But seriously, Apple needs to step up their software QA game. They are one of the most valuable companies in the world, with millions of third party developers relying on them (And suggesting improvements/fixes.)

Until apps require more than 1GB of ram.

Or re-read the title of the article and see that they are talking about 3rd party apps getting pulled. <sigh>

Actually delaying it is the right decision. People who have Mac will be confused if it only works for some but not all.

i opened a bug with myfitnesspal but maybe it was Apple's fault. Something I logged as 470 calories in their app showed up as .47 calories in Health.
