I know the obvious statement. A 16” iPad Pro is going to be crazy expensive. Why not just buy a Mac.

iPad users are vastly different from Mac users. Even if the fully spec‘d iPad Pro tops at $4,000, an avid iPad user will buy it. Individuals like myself use iPads as their primary work device and have [over the years] established the apps and workflow that works.

The convenience of iPadOS over MacOS is Completely different.

If the rumors of the below are true. I will 100% sell my 16.2“ M1 Max MacBook Pro with 64GB RAM & 8TB SSD.
- 16” OLED display
- M3 Pro
- 4TB storage
- 24 GB RAM
- Redesigned Magic Keyboard to be similar to MacBooks

With Apple silicon now on Macs I rarely reach for my iPad Pro anymore. For me, Apple Silicon was the prime reason for owning it. A thin and powerful mobile device with great battery. I think the new MacBook Airs are takin some of of their sales.

“I wasn’t wrong, they did get close.”
And it absolutely wasn’t because I was being fed wrong information for Apple to find and terminate the employment of the leaker(s).

I think it defeats the purpose of the tablet and Jobs' original vision for the iPad. The iPad was meant to slot between the iPhone and the Mac. But making it big as the Mac, without MacOS functionality doesn't seem that great. I guess it would be nice to have bigger secondary display for SideCar.

👍 At this moment in time, there are vastly more people familiar with, and desirable of, iPadOS than macOS. And the gap gets wider every year.

Would agree, but the things left for the iPad which it does best all of devices is: 1. reading magazines / newspapers and 2. watching movies on the road / train if internet connection is questionable (as unfortunately, you can't pre-download offline Netflix, Hulu, Disney, HBO Max etc. on MacOS).

Staying an additional iPad user mainly for those two user cases.

I never enjoyed watching movies / videos on iPad because of the aspect ratio of the device. Even with bigger screen you get smaller picture with huge black lines. Especially if movie itself is in 2.35:1 CinemaScope format.

There are two kinds of people when it comes to the iPad. Those who want it to become a laptop, and will be always frustrated because a tablet-like device is worse than a laptop when following a PC workflow. Then, those of us who like the iPad as a completely different device and conceptual approach.

When talking about a bigger iPad, the first group is thinking about weird things like whether it could have more ports, have a CLI, run macOS… while we happy iPad users want to see how an even bigger screen can enhance the creative potential of it, and the enjoyable way of doing day to day stuff compared to a PC/Mac (browsing, emails, books…).

Don’t get my wrong, of course there are things to improve, but I don’t understand how some people keep pushing for a concept (pure tablet-PC) that’s been dead for years.

I think the iPad is meant to be the next great thing.
As in
"If I were running Apple, I would milk the Macintosh for all it's worth -- and get busy on the next great thing. The PC wars are over. Done. Microsoft won a long time ago."

A lot of Mac folks don’t like the iPad (like a lot of Apple II users didn’t like the Mac), but new users choose the iPad over the Mac.

I’m curious to see if a 14” iPad will be carrying a Dynamic Island. Along with no bezels. 🤨

The problem with a notch/whatever is that, while in the iPhone there’s a clear default orientation (many things are even disabled on landscape, including the homescreen), there’s no “right orientation” on the iPad.

Awesome sauce! I'm pretty sure nothing's gonna stop Apple from dropping a 27-inch iPad in the future. 🍎💪😂

The iPad for me became such a useless device honestly. I have Kindle Oasis that covers all my needs in reading (except some PDFs and writing, so I will switch to Scribe next Prime Days). I have M2 Max MacBook Pro that covers all my professional and educational activity. And I have iPhone 13 Pro Max that covers all iOS-like experience that iPad delivers.

I just don’t see how can I use an iPad in its current state. It cannot replace MacBook. Even with Magic Keyboard it feels bulky and unnatural to use. It cannot offer something drastically more than iPhone (except Apple Pencil support). And if you’re not drawing in Procreate, it becomes useless for you.

I had iPad Pro 2017 for 6 years that I changed for iPad Pro M2 11". And I sold it after 3 months just because I understood that it just doesn’t fit well in any of my processes.
I feel the same about the iPad. It's a horrible MacBook replacement. The UI is clunky. Multitasking is a chore. By the time you add a keyboard and folio case, you might as well just carry a MacBook. I have a first generation 12" iPad Pro. The only thing I use it for is note-taking or marking up documents with GoodNotes (using the pencil). I absolutely love the iPad/Pencil combo for note-taking, but otherwise I find the iPad to be a pretty useless device.

Unless they put the full-fledged Mac OS X on an iPad, the “lines” will never be “blurred” between an iPad and a laptop. What they are doing is in the direction of a laptop but falls woefully short. Multi-tasking is still not there. Better than the 1st gen iOS on the iPad? Hell yeah, but there is a huge cliff once you want to stack windows on other windows.

Thats a great thought, the iPad fits between a iPhone and a Mac laptop. You start going up in size, its heavier, more two handed, still would want a external keyboard or maybe a display, and now you are trying to mimic a Mac that is running MacOS compared to more limited iPadOS. Yes in some usage a larger iPad would work great for creative work, but so would a Mac laptop which offers a lot more expandability and I/O. :)

Might as well just release a Mac with a touch screen like the MS Surface. 14 inches is a bit big for a tablet.
For real. I tried that new Galaxy Tab monstrosity out of curiosity and it just does not feel right in any orientation or for any of my needs for a tablet. Shame, too, because the S-Pen is so much more enjoyable to use than the Apple Pencil, IMO.

Considering you can use the existing iPads as external Mac displays, a larger one would do that as well.
Oh yeah. I’ve used my mini as an additional monitor. Didn’t make the obvious leap to “the larger iPads do that too.” Ha. What can I say? Been a long three nights of Phish out at Dick’s. Tour closer this eve…

Just upgraded from the 10,5 inch iPad Pro (2017) to the 12.9 inch (2021) and can’t get over the size of the screen and lack of portability. Think I’m going to return it. so a 14 inch would be a no for me.

Same and I have had 5 different iPad Generations 😅🙈 what does that say about me? My latest is iPad Air 4 and I hardly ever use it because I am on my phone all the time and it’s just more convenient laying down and during working hours, I am on my Mac. I always take the iPad on vacation, fill it up with movies and use it actually 0 😅

This is where I’m at. I have an iPad air 3 and I can’t justify upgrading it when I can just get a larger iPhone. As odd as it sounds, I never take my iPad when I travel. It’s always my phone and MBP.

Some people don’t want larger phones, for a variety of reasons.

I think iPads are done for anything but niche use cases (pilots carrying their publications, artists drawing, POS systems…). Funny because it’s the exact opposite of what Apple wanted to happen a few years ago.

And yet Apple sells a lot to a wide range of users who do a lot of different things with them, including running businesses, teaching in the classroom, email and web surfing…

Pro and Pro Max makes it easy to go mobile. And Macs are far more capable, people still love them even though they neglected and abused the line for years.

The Pro and Pro Max are far too small to be useful for a number of mobile use cases that the iPad does quite well. YEs, my MBP is more capable but it is heavier, can’t be used in portrait mode, and doesn’t fit well on an airplane seat.

Same for me. The alternative to an M1 Air would be the iPad Pro 12.9" with the magic keyboard. Much more expensive, heavier, less stable, worse keyboard and trackpad, and limited OS. Never understood the point of tablets. Only thing that makes sense is if you want to draw/write.

For me, the Air and iPad serve two complementary purposes. While it won’t replace my MBP, it is quite usefule for when I don’t want or need the power of a MBP. Everyone has different needs and use cases.

I would have no interest in such a form factor. For me, the point of owning the tablet starts to break down when it is as difficult to carry around and hold in your hands as a laptop.

For my job I draw. None of the other devices work with the pencil so it still has a critical role in my workflow.
