If Apple thinks a government is misinterpreting a law in a way that was going to make its users less safe and give away its hard-earned innovations to competitors and will make its future products worse wouldn't you want them to fight it?
Apple thinks they’re losing control and money. They don’t care what their users want and less so what the developers that made them big would want. That’s also why every app store after the iPhone has been a failure.

Imagine advocating for apps being able to store your credit card numbers in a plaintext SQL database for digital goods. Idiots.

"We want a choice!". You already do. Android. Not hard to understand. You're essentially reducing choice by making iOS like Android. 🤦‍♂️
Saying android is a choice is like saying 2nd amendment in USA can be removed and if you want those rights, you can move.

I suspect the number of users who want alternate app stores and sideloading is mindnumbling small. Those aren't frequently used features on Android, which has long been the choice for those who want "open" software. I imagine the vast, vast majority of iOS users prefer the status quo, that is safe, secure, and convenient.

People like us who comment on MacRumors and are technically proficient are a tiny minority of Apple's users.

You can’t develop a program for an iOS that Apple doesn’t like. You can’t use a 3rd party watch under iOS the same way you can use an Apple watch. Etc. Etc. That’s anti competitive and anti consumer and I hope the EU fines the sh*t out of Apple until they do the right thing…
Why should Apple allow non-Apple devices to work with their hardware/software? There are numerous software packages that don't work on my MacBook. Should those software developers also be forced to make it work on a computer that I chose to purchase? Why is it that Microsoft Excel has different features when used on a Mac vs a PC?

Please let Apple release iPhone mirroring on macOS just like it was intended.

I still can't figure out what people do with this.

The only thing I've enjoyed and used from it so far in 2025 is the phone notifications coming over.

I find the actual "interacting" with the phone way more cumbersome than just picking up my phone sitting on my desk right next to me.

There are a couple of apps I use that don't have Mac apps and whose websites are particularly clunky and always require a 2 factor code (my company's timesheet service is the prime example). It's way faster for me to use mirroring to enter my time than log in, complete the captcha, wait for a two factor code to come in, then have to log in again.

But my phone also lives in my pocket while I'm at my desk, so that may influence things.

As an oversimplification, this is why we have IEEE standards and compliance. Without the IEEE we would still be in the 80’s. That industry consortium has established all the common protocols for communications, form factors, data storage, etc. etc. what is wrong with that approach to interoperability?
When you have a consortium, you have to accommodate the lowest common denominator. This is the reason why it's possible to have 30+ types of usb-c cables. Meanwhile, only 2 types of lightning cables exist.

They own the operating system and they are deliberately giving their products an advantage over the competitors by only making additional software available for their own products
That’s the point
That's called competition!

It's like saying "Bose owns the best noise canceling algorithm and is using it to deliberately give their products an advantage over the competitors by only making their noise cancelation algorithm available for their own products".

Software integration is just another feature. Saying Apple has to allow others to integrate with Apple's software just the same way, for free is just as wrong as saying Bose has to give everyone their noise cancellation algorithm to everyone for free.

Are iOS app developers, not also apple customers?

I'm with Apple on this one. Apple has always been about integrating hardware and software to create a cohesive environment, The Walled Garden. There's a reason this appeal to millions of users.

It's kind of like telling Chevy their engines have to work in their competitor's vehicles.

Yeah… but… a big but……. Chevy engines would work in their competitors vehicles. They don’t need to be told to do it, it’s just the nature of the beast. I’m sure you could throw one in a Tesla too, but it’d need a bit more than just the engine.

And beyond that being a terrible analogy. Cars are good here to bring in… for the other side. Notifications in cars, truly going hands free… there’s no reason why it should be so difficult to get a text in every car and not have to pick up your phone to interact with it. And don’t CarPlay/Android Auto me here. Those are glorified screen mirroring tools that find themselves miles behind modern systems in modern cars. Tesla, Rivian are better — even the one you brought up, Chevy, has an Android Automotive system that is better than both.

If Netflix built a TV where you can only watch Netflix and nothing else, you'd simply don't buy it.
Alexa devices only uses Alexa voice assistant and people buy that. It's not homekit compatible.
Spotify buit a car thing where it could only officially play Spotify music. It was dumb and Spotify cancelled it.

Weird how only people complain if Apple does it.

Exactly. And why bluetooth pair sucked for decades until Apple came around and fixed it for their devices. But in the future, if Apple fixes another pain point like that, they have to give it away to everyone. So we're now counting on Apple's good will to solve problems without being able to recoup its investment.

Especially since all of the pro DMA people keep telling me Apple doesn't care about users at all and just profits, why would they bother spending millions to fix a small pain point if they can't use it to differentiate their products? That's pretty much doing R&D for all of their competitors for them.

Yeah, and we're all using bluetooth ... across endless devices, to connect and interoperate with each other!

Thank god that's not vendor locked!

Or to give their products a deliberate advantage so customers choose their products over the competition regardless if the competition offers a better product

like alexa devices?
Kindles?
Nintendo devices? Xbox? Playstation?

list goes on.
