What is the point

Seriously? What is the point? You can just go into video recorder, turn on the flash and that's it. You can stay in preview mode - and the light will shine. All for free!

The LED has at least two power modes: "low" for video, and "high" when using the flash to take a picture. The flashlight apps out so far use the "low" power mode. You can see the high LED power when you take a photo while the flash is set to ON -- it's a lot brighter.
It may not be possible with Apple's API, but it would be nice to have a flashlight with selectable low/high power.

People have been talking about using the LED as a light when Gizmodo had the prototype phone

Uh ? People have been using the LED as a light since phones have had them. Circa 2002.

Welcome Apple to 8 years ago.

It's funny this is even a story, to refuse such apps would have been the dumbest move on Apple's part. The only LED flash equipped phone you can't use as a flashlight...

(And really, video recorder -> light on is the best way. Why give money to somebody for something you can get for free ? Greedy devs writing up apps in 5 minutes to sell or sustain using Ads is what is polluting the App Store in the first place).

Maybe because the icon is awful. Seeing it every time you turn your iPhone on will make you wanna throw up. No thank you. I don't wanna negative effects in my life. I'd rather pay 99cents and feel better each time I use a product.

Agreed. That's why I've settled on Jason Ting's free app.

Power Light is Now Available!!!

Hi Everyone,

I'm happy to announce that Power Light is now available on the App Store and we've decided to make it completely FREE.

Download now from:
http://itunes.apple.com/app/power-light/id366871005

I hope you really enjoy Power Light as much as I have developing it and interacting with all of you guys during the development process on the forums.

We have some features that other Free Flashlight apps don't have including:
• Screen Light — sometimes it's nice to use your screen as a softer light for reading, etc. We prevent the screen lock from dimming the display.
• Auto-Off — Set a timer to turn off the flash light incase you accidentally leave it on. Great for saving battery life.
• We plan on adding more features to this FREE app.

We also have put a lot of work into the design. Here is our icon:

Hey, just wondering but do you guys think that the LED will eventually burn out? I mean, did apple intend for people to use their camera flash as a flashlight? How long will the LED last? Sorry if this is a stupid question but im not really familiar with LED's.

I don't know for sure but I've heard 50,000 hours... longer than you'll probably have your iPhone 4 :)

Our Power Light app loads in 1 second with one-tap. Doing it with the Camera app takes four taps and takes 7 seconds. And it's Free.

You don't think that having the video recording app running might kill battery and use resources just a hint more than an app that only turns on the LED?

Oh noes !

My Sony Ericsson worked fine with me doing it that way for years, I sure hope the iPhone 4 doesn't die in a few minutes just because the screen might be showing some video captured from the camera.

How about letting us use that led to flash when we have an email missed call missed text ect. I miss that since i moved from blackberry.

Technically, if he is using "lot" as a collective, a singular verb is correct.

Although "lot" is probably a poor choice for a group of people. Unless you are psychotic. Mob would be more appropriate.
Since when did 'people' become singular too? ;)

iPhone 4 Flashlight - Everlight

I just downloaded the app called Everlight and it works well. All of the other lights are to busy and not well designed. I have deleted the others from my phone. The interface is really nice and the on off sound is great. Worth the .99 in my opinion.

You can download it HERE
