i can see it now....

Consumers will now be complaining about battery power and preparing clss-action lawsuits against Apple for not making the iPhone 4 more capable of being a $200 flashlight/vibrator/coffee maker. After all, when Apple doesn't explicitly say that the iPhone 4 *ISN'T* really intended to be a flashlight/vibrator/coffee maker, to the customer this translates into Apple's promise that it can do any/all of the above in all conditions and circumstances, without any impact on overall phone performance.

And if you took this post completely seriously, you may need your head examined.

Well, obviously there're tons of these now but if you're looking for one that's very fast (and attractive) try lightOn: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/lighton/id379854699?mt=8

It doesn't have any unnecessary buttons, it just starts the LED as soon as the app opens (with fast app switching it's super, super fast).

Disclaimer: I made it, but I do think it's the most attractive and I personally favour the instant switch on approach.

What does this do that the free version, with iAd, not do?

How about one that can also pulsate the light or one that can run in background while other apps are open.

Mine got approved too but I received this email from Apple:

Here are 5 PROMO CODES just for you guys:

PLK96AN66N3R
3RM7T97LHFPP
AR7HHKWWEJTY
KMM6P4XJTAX6
7KHTWAXWAYFX

LED-Torch: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/led-torch/id379656940?mt=8

It is the simplest, fastest LED Flashlight app. I didn't include any fancy graphic to make it start as fast as possible. Also you don't have to worry about accidental taps because it requires a double tap to toggle on/off. Hope you like it....
I already submitted an update to make it even faster.

I was going to give this a try, ColdCoffee. All 5 codes used, and as far as I see not so much as a single Thank You. Not cool guys, not cool.

The question should be: When does Apple finally drop their completely useless approval process and when will they finally be forced to open their devices to competing AppStores?
You'll have far better luck forcing WalMart into stocking your home-made cookies.
It should be up to the customer to decide whether an application is acceptable or not. End of story.

It works the opposite from how you think. There already have been more open app stores (PalmGear, which went bankrupt BTW), and the customers end up deciding among less apps, and even more junk, and more often decide that nothing is worth risking their credit card info. Why? Because a significant portion of developers flock to where there's money, iTunes already has a gazillion credit cards on file, and Apple's curated process funnels even more money into iTunes... and thus even more to developers. Where there are lots of developers making money, there are also a lot more customers making a lot more choices.

Agree, but...

Certainly not useless, their system obviously has its advantages along with its disadvantages. I think, as the creators of the iPhone, they should be able to decide how it should be used. ... I just think it's more respectful to the creators to use their products as they envisioned.

I agree, but then why are there seemingly dozens of paid apps just to get to the free emoji icons? Apple should screen harder to protect customers if they're going to keep this model.

Wrong. The scammer phished peoples' iTunes logins and passwords. He then logged into those accounts and bought copies of iBooks that he himself published (infringing on copyrights, BTW.)

The iTunes Store wasn't hacked, and it wasn't an app.
Not exactly. Thuat Nguyen's purchased iTunes account info from a Chinese cracking group, for as low as $0,14 per iTunes account. That's how bad things can go.

While I don't think anyone wants 100 versions of flash light, "inappropriate use of hardware" excuse is lame.

Come on, people. A dollar? really? An on-off switch in software and you want a dollar?

It's almost worth learning the iPhone API and all of the other ******** just to release a free version to piss on all your parades.

The Flashlight App

I can see having a morse code app for hikers (or those that fly on Oceanic flight 815) for emergency signaling.

Actually, "The Flashlight App" does have a mode where you basically do morse code (with a 'key' on the screen in case you don't know it). Pretty nice app. It has strobe and the 'double light' feature where it lights up both the LED and the screen.

Here's a demo video:

(BTW, I'm in no way affiliated with the makers)

Why bother with a app when all I need to do is start the video camera and turn the LED on there?

1. tap camera icon
2. flip to video
3. tap flash icon
4. hit "on" and the light comes on

versus

1. tap flashlight icon and the light comes on

How about you write your own. That way you can guarantee it's free.

Don't be such a jerk

a fart app takes more programming than an overpriced light app

I'm surprised apple didn't have it built in along with SOS flashing lights - oh just gave u an idea didn't I? Maybe you can charge $1.99 for that version?

Looks interesting via the YouTube link but saying 'not available in US Store'.

[EDIT] I found it by searching for 'Light' but the link to the store above didn't work, which is what I was referring to.

Message Notification Use

Guys, i think we are missing a great opportunity that apple has missed with this phone. Now im not sure if the code can be linked or not, but how about use the light to blink when a call/voicemail/text is missed after the 5 minute chirp.
then we can have a notification without having to constantly be around the phone... maybe user setting for the amount of time this would last etc. so it doesnt "kill the battery"

just a thought, and if someone does make it, maybe i can get a freebie for the idea as i can see a lot of profit with this one!

Ok this is going to show my total 'noob' mentality but what's the life expectancy on these LED lights?
