I don't mind the notch on regular upright mode. But landscape mode with video still feels uncomfortable. Pinch and zoom just make the video much smaller.

And then people will blame Apple when their screens burn in because of the app. This is why Apple didn’t black everything out, because when you finally use that space, that area will Be brighter than the rest of the screen. This is why the Pixel navbar keeps burning in.

I thought with OLED displays, black was rendered by the pixels simply being off (i.e. not displaying anything). Am I mistaken? If a pixel isn't illuminated, I'm not sure how that would cause burn-in.

Wow...it actually looks so much better without the notch....who knew?

(thats right...everyone)

Eye of the beholder, the notch adds character. I am on the fence relating to watching videos or photos and it cuts into. For everything else, one just forgets about it.

Eh, now there's an oddly large top bezel. But for those who want it, kudos to the dev. Maybe there could be an option to choose a color besides black so it doesn't totally blend in, cause it also looks weird with the wallpaper going all the way into the ears.

Pixels degrade when used. When an area is blacked out and not used, then those pixels aren’t degrading like the rest of the pixels are. This means that when you finally use that area, that area will be brighter than the rest of the screen as those pixels were used significantly less.

How does black burn in on oled? The pixels are off

The Notch is not a Problem for me, after one week i really got used to it, but this indicator for accessing the Home screen (this line/stroke at the bottom) is annoying.
I know the gesture and i don‘t need to see this line all the time in apps which is only a waste of space.

I love how people here are defending the notch.

It sucks. We all know it. I can say with a fair amount of certainty that everyone would prefer for it to not be there (without an app to remove it, I mean).

It is dead space that Apple put there.

The notch remover is trying to mitigate the intrusiveness of it. The screen is still displaying what it needs to on the sides of the notch, but when watching a video the notch is not in the way.

I get that you can get used to the notch, but that's like saying it's ok to accept garbage because you go nose blind after a while..

How hilarious to see.

I had a chance to try out an iphone X in the store the other day, and much to my surprise and completely contrary to what I anticipated, it took me all of two seconds for the notch to fade into the background and not even be noticed by me...at all. I was shocked at that as I thought it would really annoy me. But it didn't!

So yeah, I think this app makes the phone look worse and a little boring frankly.

I don't think anyone is defending the Notch, I personally don't like it either. When you purchase the phone, you already know it's there. The majority of people that, I'm assuming, is complaining about it already OWN the phone, so it's really pointless to complain about it, right?

I also don't agree with it being dead space. Apple happened to place some very significant technology inside that notch. When you can figure out how to implement everything that's inside that dead space, through glass, then maybe you should work for Apple or, patent it, sell it, then make a billion dollars from it.

They weren't able to figure out how to implement the TouchID underneath the glass, so...

I think it looks ridiculous with the fake bezel across the top.
I also don't understand why anyone would buy the X if the notch is that big of a deal to them. Bragging rights, I guess. Oh, well. o_O

I’m sorry, but how is it people just ‘accept’ the notch? Like fair enough, it exists now because of the fantastic technology that comes with the iPhone X and its facial recognition, but after this next year or so, one would hope it would eventually go away and produce an non-intrusive viewing experience. Or are people seriously just gonna suck it up for the sake of supporting Apple?

Some people's sense of aesthetics are driven by trusted sources. In fashion, there are some outfits that look absolutely hideous but because it was a famous designer, it is received as fashionable. In a similar sense, there are those who look to Apple for fashion/style cues. And when Apple does it, by the mere fact of Apple doing it, makes it fashionable.

This is not a dig at anyone who does that. We all have different reasons for liking what we like. There's nothing more "noble" for going with that or going against it. Personally, I don't like much of Apple's new aesthetics... in hardware or software, but I can understand why so many others do. That includes the notch.

Typical of Apple to put a marketing spin on it and make out it's functional and by design though.

It is functional, in the sense that you wouldn’t be able to make a call, unlock your phone or make FaceTime calls without it, and it also serves a design purpose, in that you can have more screen space when in app, at least in portrait mode, because the signal levels and battery percentage icons are tucked away in the gaps.

You can also avoid it having much of an affect on landscape mode if you don’t zoom on movies from what I’ve seen.

Had they done anything else, they’d have been accused of copying Samsung. They traded that for pissing a select few off!

I love how people here are defending the notch.

Alot of them say that "they have gotten used to it"

So if it takes time getting used to, there is quite a good chance that those without an X will think the notch looks stupid.

Hard to believe this notch is something Apple really would want to use to make their devices stick out if it takes getting used to.

I know it isn't really dead space; I used the term because people here were complaining that the notch remover app had "dead space" between the screen horns, which made no sense to me (the comments, not the app).

It has nothing to do with supporting Apple, all manufacturers are presented with the same trade off.

Apple places 8 sensors/transducers in the notch, and only 3 are TrueDepth/FaceID specific. Unless all can be relocated, you have two choices: a full width bezel as tall as the notch, or the notch.

Eliminating the ears doesn’t make the notch go away, it just makes it full width—and then you lose the usable area of the ears.

I don't think it looks stupid, I think it IS stupid.

Who the hell needs something intruding into the screen?? There is no justifying that thing.

It's bad design, period. Anyone stating otherwise is saying the Emperor isn't naked.

Now, if you love Apple so much that you can live with something literally blocking your screen, then hey, don't worry, be happy, free country and all that.
