Apple Approves 'Notch Remover' App for iPhone X

Orrr instead of paying 99 cents for it, you could just move your own wallpaper down a little and remove it yourself! Because the notch will be there in other apps regardless. Anyway, I have personally embraced the notch and don’t mind it at all. It looks cool that my wallpaper goes all the way up there. Because of this app, it looks like there’s a Galaxy S8 size bezel up there. No thanks.

It's funny. The lock screen photo I carried over from my 7+ happens to fade to black at the top, and the wallpaper I use has always been full black (I hate the way photos of any kind mix with app icons and especially names). My combo works perfectly with my X to hide the notch. Not that I really care so much.

Someone is into making a lot of money on this one :D
(until the Chinese knockoffs hit the AppStore in 3.2.1..)

I find it hard to believe Apple approved this and intends to keep it. It goes against everything they put in print about use of the notch.

Making the notch all-black is stupid. Why add a digital bezel when there's SCREEN there?

I think it would be good if Apple applied the black section during certain instances such as watching a video or gaming.

Most ridiculous design ever to come out of Apple and an obvious sign of a design compromise if ever I saw one!

Typical of Apple to put a marketing spin on it and make out it's functional and by design though.

First of all, the different radius of the top an bottom corners look hideous. It also makes the top look like a huge bezel. Secondly, I don’t see how this is newsworthy at all. The effect can be accomplished by any photo editing app and doesn’t require any hacks or exploitation of bugs in iOS. There is no reason for Apple to blocks this.

What’s the chance these “notch remover” apps leave a burn-in stripe across the top of phone? Not to familiar with OLED tech...does black cause burn-in or just brighter colors?

I don’t get it...
I mean, you aren’t looking at your wallpaper while you’re in apps or watching videos & that’s when the notch would be annoying.
Lol, so I guess the market for this is people that spend all day staring lovingly at their home screens??

allowing this app is a good way to monitor with real data how many people like/don't like the notch..

Look, there is either going to be a huge black bar or there is going to be a notch. Even if there was no TouchID you would still have to put the front facing camera, speaker, and other light sensors somewhere. It’s obiously a design compromise due to current level of technology advancements, but since Apple decided to give the user more screen real estate, why not make the notch functional?

People complaining about the notch are like the idiots who would only buy Fullscreen DVDs! I still have some that were given as gifts. They have the wrapper on them because I refuse to open them. WTF who buys Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in Fullscreen!!!

“Don't attempt to hide the device's rounded corners, sensor housing, or indicator for accessing the Home screen by placing black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.”

I mean. They only put it at the top. Not top and bottom.

Neither are ideal but on balance I think I prefer it with the notch because it emphasises the edge-to-edge screen rather than having the bezel added at the top. It's made me realise though that to my eyes having a notch isn't such a huge issue. If Apple could shave even 10% off the height and width next year by whatever means they can (e.g. packing some of the sensors/illuminators/transducers more tightly together) it would make a big difference. I don't think that the notch needs to go away completely, just getting a bit smaller next year would deliver a big aesthetic improvement.

How does that look better? It looks like a bunch of dead space. At least with the notch you what it is and why it’s there.
And you think having the notch in between the side of the display didn’t create a dead space? Make up your mind, a dead space is a dead space at least some people have an option to make it uniform and less annoying for them. Do you have the phone itself, because that one is not a small notch more like an in your face notch!

Im fine with the notch remover, if that’s your thing. But it most certainly does go against the guidelines, which state in part: “Don’t mask key display areas. Don't attempt to hide the device's rounded corners, sensor housing... by placing black bars at the top or bottom of the screen.”

Their app doesn't do that. Their app adds a black out to wallpaper. duh!

I personally prefer the notch and completely forgot if it was there after hours of use. My iPhone 7 Plus looks so old. Actually every squared screen looks like came from Stone Age to me.
