It's not like they've given any exact date yet, therefore, it wouldn't name the date.

Look at it like Final Cut Pro, they didn't announce that beforehand. It was released then Apple updated the website.

Yep, but they need time to review the apps, I don't think they are going to be able to review a lot of them if the rumored date of the 14st were right.

Nobody knows what Apple is up to.

All I know is that their servers on the day of release will be raped beyond belief.

In the stores, they could still start selling new hardware (MB Air, MacPro) running Lion this week, and make the download available next week. I seem to remember that happening in the past.

That would be cool. Lion is given to the people buying the hardware first, then to everybody else.

I still don't understand why Lion is a nightmare for mass deployments?

Because instead of reading the information that was posted on how to handle large scale deployments of Lion like real IT people do the fake IT people on the internet just complain about it.

From everything I've read Lion looks really easy to upgrade to.

Saw someone else post this:

"if they are just asking for apps now I would doubt we will see Lion this week."

And in response someone else said "Yeah, an AppStore review by Apple would take a week or so in the past so I doubt it would be this week. 29.7.2011 is more likely. Or the Monday prior."

Anyone agree or disagree with this?

Agree. Why would they send out that email just three days before Lion's release? Hope I'm wrong, though.

Would major developers already have submitted software to be approved??
I find the idea of the app store very restricting,in any case

It is. You launch an application, click some buttons, and reboot. There's really nothing to it.

I've been using Lion for the past two months. It's not just the headline features (full screen apps, Launchpad, Mission Control) that make Lion different from Snow Leopard. There are lots of small additions that make the OS much more powerful and, really, a pleasure to use. Spotlight search previews, Mail 5, full disk encryption, search tokens, autosave, AirDrop, and a host of other features make it a big jump from Snow Leopard.

Of course, if some users prefer to stay with 10.6, that's fine. Not every aspect of the OS is pleasing. iCal and Address Book look funky. Launchpad is a bit cheesy. But, there aren't any glaring problems. Lion is no "Vista".

We know and most of us are respecting the NDA.

Oh please, drop the elitism. You could've answered his question without breaking NDA, simply by citing stuff Apple has shown at WWDC or at the Back to the Mac event.

Fullscreen apps and versions are 2 prominent examples that have been publicly displayed where developers will need to rewrite some parts of their applications and submit them in time to get support on launch day.

I still feel this will not be released until NEXT Wednesday after the conference call. Apple has not released new products once the date of the conference call was announced until after it ends. If they do this, they will be breaking tradition that dates back several years at the very least.

My guess is 7/20 or 7/21.

They didn't release a new iPhone this summer so breaking tradition is not out of the question...

... full disk encryption,....

I don't understand why they're moving to full disk encryption. Encrypting the home directory seems most efficient - it encrypts your private stuff, while not wasting time encrypting system folders, etc. If you have content you don't want encrypted (for full speed), you can just put it outside your home folder (like my iTunes media).

Previous OS X release dates:

10.1 September 25, 2001
10.2 August 23, 2002
10.3 October 24, 2003
10.4 April 29, 2005
10.5 October 26, 2007
10.6 August 28, 2009

Notice anything?

Of course the argument could be that being download only Lion will shave some time off and come out earlier in the month of release... but personally I think it's going to be at the (ahem)tail-end of the month, and this news only makes me think that even more. I'm guessing in the twenty-somethings anyway.

Personally, I don't see a problem with apps being approved days after the release of Lion. I don't think its logical to have a bunch of releases on a single day. I can see it as Lion and Airs on a single day then a gradual approval of apps once users get used to the operating system...

I have a question. It might not be directly related, but I just had my entire iLife 2011 suite updated by Software Update... anyone think this is in prep. for Lion or could it just be coincidence?

I still think there's a chance of Lion launching this week, even if it is not on the 14th (my birthday :D)

Probably just a marketing thing because it sounds better instead of "partial disk encryption". I agree, seems a bit inefficient, but my guess is it's like "HD". Most people don't understand it but it just sells product. :)

I sort of subconsciously already knew that. That is, I always knew that when they said "August", they like to push things and make me wait til August 30th or something.

Yes, I also found it annoying that it came out on the Mac App Store before Software Update and that the Mac App Store did not see the iLife apps as "Installed". Maybe these updates fix that so future updates can be done from the store.

10.7 July 29 2011 Friday, anyone?

Friday and end of month is the pattern here, this confirms what i thought that the Lion page on apple.com would have been updated with the release date by now instead of just saying "coming in July" if it was going to be released this week. I bet we'll see that page update by end of this week with the actual release date which will probably be as close to the end of the month as they can get.
