And what was UNETHICAL about that?

If my memory serves me right, there was price fixing involved back then. Its ultimately what gave way to Apple's monumental success. Without the iPod, Apple would still be stuck at their 5% PC marketshare they once had.

The amount Apple MIGHT win in the lawsuit is properly seen as chickenfeed, and they're not going to win exclusivity over use of their claimed IP either unlike what Qualcomm achieved.

As I asked many months ago, what exactly is the definition of victory in this lawsuit for Apple?

Let's contrast this to Microsoft whose goal was attaining pure cash and now is able to license their exFAT patents to the Android phone makers to the tune of billions of dollars in licensing fees every year.

Yes, but this lawsuit is only over a handful of patents. Samsung will have to pay the damages, pay a royalty for ongoing infringement, and work out a licensing deal or avoid using the patents in the future. Then it has the other 200 or so patents to content with that Apple is or will be suing over.

I was thinking the same thing... the phones are just as high end as apple's.

Have you actually held either? They are made out of cheap plastic (Nokia has a much better plastic body as does the iPhone 5C). The phones feel fragile. Further, Samsung had to cheat on benchmarking.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/01/wsj-apple-to-use-samsung-retina-displays-on-next-ipad-mini/

Earlier this month, there was a rumor that Apple was facing possible delays with its next-gen iPad mini due to supplier issues with an (also rumored) next generation Retina display. Now WSJ is reporting that Apple may have gotten around the problem thanks to, of all companies, Samsung.

Yes, but back in the late 90s when Samsung's LCD business was hurting, Apple invested over 100 million dollars into Samsung's LCD business. So, you could also argue Apple's early investment in Samsung's LCD business has put Samsung in the position it is in today.

Pointing out apple's shortcomings is just another way of constructive criticism. There's no bias here although certain things Apple does, does get on my nerves while other things they do/produce I will hold in very high regards (I wouldnt be on this board if I didnt find at least ONE of apple's products useful enough to buy, use, and talk about online here).

I'm sorry, I guess you fooled me with the ridiculous statement that Apple "unethically created a monopoly."

Apple is constantly winning with the phone tech and looks, and its got billions. How about saying putting the court winnings to a good use, you know, like the Philippines typhoon victims.

So much for the $1 billion

Apple wants $979 million. Samsung wants to give them $650 million. What's more important to Apple is a sales ban, though. That would give them more leverage since Samsung would wind up having to keep using workarounds.

Just saw another 503 error, are you guys getting hacked again? This article looks a little messed up as well.

Yeah.

I'm seeing this on the front page.

Odd??

Something is off... the article looks like it's been changed... says Apple is suing for 9 million... then 5... then... Yikes!

So true.. the title,$ sign, and amount keep getting edited.

Problem is Samsung doesn't develop anything themselves.

What? Where is your proof? To say they don't develop anything is BS. They are EVERYWHERE, the smartphone business is just one aspect of Samsung.

So much for the $1 billion

Well, $650 million that the judge has already granted, plus $379 million that Apple wants additionally, that makes a billion. Looks like Samsung isn't getting away with their thievery.

But right now they also have to contend with a judge who is absolutely furious about Samsung's behaviour (she is waiting for weeks for an explanation how confidential information moved from Samsung's lawyers to Samsung management).

So much for the $1 billion

Someone didn't follow the whole story, and didn't read this article... ;)

Here's the part you missed:

Back in March, Judge Lucy Koh struck 450 million from the 1 billion USD awarded to Samsung after deciding the jury may have miscalculated the damages due to a misunderstanding of patent issues.
[...]
It appears the retrial may ultimately benefit Samsung, as Apple's $379 million request is significantly lower than the nullified 450 million award, though Samsung is also responsible for the 600 million that was not struck from the first jury decision.

It should be noted howeer that the orignal number was 1.05 billion.
So... $1.05G - $450M + $379M would be $979M.
So yeah, pretty much a billion.

Either way, like someone mentioned, that's pocket change for Samsung relatively to the revenues generated by their smartphone business, which wasn't anywhere close to that big before they started to make phones similar to the iPhone.

They already got a $600 million judgment in this lawsuit. This article is focusing on the remaining amount which apple has pegged at $379 million. Samsung says $52 so if it's somewhere in the middle, say $200 million, then an overall $800 million is pretty close.

It won't be somewhere in the middle. That's not how it works. It's not a negotiation. It's a jury deciding what damage Samsung has done.

The problem isn't the fact that Apple didn't invent. The problem is that Apple UNETHICALLY uses their power to create a monopoly through a flawed system.

Please get your facts right. Samsung is the one threatened by the EU with a 13 billion Euro fine for abusing their patents.

So much for the $1 billion

Seems like an odd comment given that the article relates to a dispute over $450 million. In either case both sides had some basis for their calculations, so turning it into a one liner doesn't work well.

Here we go again. Just when you thought you could get a break from their greedy lawsuits.

These Apple-Samsung lawsuits are becoming so old hat that I'm now simply fixating on the fact that MacRumors is using the old iOS startup Apple logo rather than the new one.
