Seriously dude, it's pretty obvious what age you are saying something this ridiculous and it's obvious you'll never be a good parent with that mentality. SJ could give a rats behind if the kids hate him, they're still buying his product. :p

I dont want to be a parent and deal with kids sexting, and having sex when they're 13, and having kids when they're 16, and me having to raise my grandchildren, and having to buy them gadgets and spending a vast amount of money raising them so they can leave me in a nursing home when I'm old... nope, i'll pass on that.

Have fun doing that :)

If kids start thinking "I want an HTC phone cuz I can sext with it", apple will lose customers, not millions, but they will lose customers.

^^^^Truth.

1+1 ≠ 3

Kids need nannies because kids have been known to make bad decisions.

This option isn't meant for anyone over the age of 18.

If your kid has this sexting problem, you have other issues which Apple can't address. What are you going to do then, wait for an Apple solution. You probably didn't get the deeper meaning "Apple - Facilitating the Nanny State one step at a time..." as you rely on other to do the work you should be doing. I hope you are not one of those parents you see in the mall who's kid is throwing a temper tantrum and the mommy is saying all sweetly "Johnny your going to get a time out."

...when of course what she should be doing is thrashing the child to within an inch of its life. Parents these days, eh? Too bloody soft, if you ask me.

Nope that's a trip to lockup in this day and age. However mankind seem to be able to reach this far without sparing the rod.

Sexting isn't a problem. It's a problem when kids do it because they don't have proper judgement.

I get what you said, but you're mistaken if you think it has deeper meaning.

And no, I'm actually one of those parents who shake their heads at the parents in your example.

If you're mad that mommy and daddy are going to restrict your iPhone use further, don't take it out on me by borderline insults.

If you read my post that I quoted, it should be fairly obvious to you. Apple is merely providing parents with another tool that will help them keep their kids from doing stupid crap. A tool. That's all. It isn't mandatory. If a parent chooses to use it, it's their right. If they don't want to use it, that's cool too.

I would equate this to kneepads for a skateboarder- he doesn't have to use them according to the law, but if he's under 18 and his parents say he has to, he has to. Better to wear the kneepads and look like a pu**y then to bust up a knee.

Everyone relies on others' work to help them do their own work. Did you create and build your computer? The house you're in? The textbooks you use? It's how you use that work that matters.

This sounds like my e-mail spam filter, hardly deserving of a patent.

So, after my iPhone tells me that I can't flirt, I'm just going to go over and flirt in person.

Dude, if all goes well I am about to be a grandfather for the first time next month. Both my kids are old.

Agreed. I bet if apple tried to sue any one for this it would get thrown out pretty quickly as their is plenty of examples in Email before hand. They are just using a bayesian filter on the messages. Nothing fancy in that.

Bigger problem will be since apple is controlling it that means one database that everything is based off of so the keywords that will break it will be the same.

bayesian filters have weakness and that above is it.

Check and mate?

Congrats....... but so what? That doesn't make your point more valid.

You're acting as if this is mandated censorship for all. This is just an option for parents to use if they choose to.

If your kids were tweens/teens right now, I think your opinion would be different.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Jaw drops, sexting isn't even illegal for adults. Jackasses that made this

No, that is not what I take away from the comment I quoted. Just reading the first headline I automatically guessed that this was a thing that could be turned on and off. A Nanny State has nothing to do with mandated censorship.

Really? People care?

I don't understand why this upsets so many people. It's just parental controls something everything has xbox, computers, ps3s. I guess everyone 16 and under is probably upset by this because their parents might enable it. As many people have said this will of course be optional so if you're a grown man/woman why would this upset you?

Parental responsibility? Yeah... There's An App for That.

Does anyone else see that irony that Apple launched on the famous 1984 advertising campaign and now they are facilitating censorship controls? :(

Most kids under 18 don't need an iPhone. If they can justify the cost of an iPhone, then I would assume they are responsible enough to not do improper things with it.

Also, maybe I'm missing something. But it's the main problem of them sending nude photos? How are those censored?

Oh please, I've read many people here (I certainly don't agree with it) that let their 4 year olds play with their brand new iPad. Funny though, a couple of the kids have actually broken the screens on them. Too many parents here over-cherish their kids to a point that they feel they can do no wrong so they'll be more than happy to spend good money on their minor child for an iPhone.

apples really sticking its pickle in peoples back door. While I am not for that I do enjoy playing just the tip with my girlfriends soft taco.

this patent is useless IMO

In practical purposes, it is one more patent for specsmanship and portfolio padding. In the real world, it has no application. Sort of like a Racial Studies, Political Science or Communications degree.

What does this say about America? That we actually need to monitor text messages in fears of sexting?

You know, I think it's more a matter of "What does this say about Steve Jobs?".

He was the reason that the AppStore was stripped of most of the adult-themed apps earlier this year and he is also known to respond to things like "Why do you care so much, Steve?" by replying "Just wait until you have kids. You will feel differently about it then."

Personally, I don't care about those apps, but I do care about the 1st Amendment. Oh well...

I let my 5 1/2 month old play with my iPad..... he loves the Doodle Buddy app. If he breaks it, it's my fault for letting him play with it.

I don't see how this is much different to parental controls on say, a computer.

And considering the age at which kids start picking up a cell phone for themselves is getting younger and younger all the time, why not? There's nothing wrong with a little parenting for the really young crowd people.

Besides, who would want their 10 year old daughter seeing the neighbor boy's goods on the girl's phone?
