This is where apple has almost always been ahead of the game. Most companies just deal with the here and now, while apple goes and tries to see what you will want later. In doing so they are often at the forefront of innovation.

Like many people say here: Apple gives you what you didn't even know you wanted, but after using, couldnt live without.

You are right. Like cut and paste. I mean damn, I'll never need that. Thanks apple for being so damn innovative. Low class camera (on an expensive phone) with no video, apple is way ahead of the game! And who will need multitasking 2/3 years down the road?!?! Not me! I bet no one else here either! And battery life? Please, that is so played out! I won't need any more battery life 2/3 hours down the road so its all good apple!

Who the hell wants to send a MMS anyway? Or receive one? Hell, you can just log on to some obscure website once you get to your computer and check it out! That is the definition of being at the forefront of innovation.

i love the little app picture for stocks on that picture..the line almost curves back on itself....almost

Other touch screens

Am I wrong or did resturants and other shops have touch screen computer way before apple came out with the Iphone?

James

Wrong, 90% of iPhone users are brand new to Apple and use Windows.

Damn, well I guess that says a lot about how apple is doing in other areas...(and if 90% of them are using windows then that also says a lot about how not intelligent those people are)

So your just going to ignore my points and follow on with your crusade right?

Yes there are areas of improvement, but if the phone where crap like you claim, it wouldnt be selling like it does.

To all the Pre-Haters: Are you scared of a phone being better than the iPhone?

I agree that the iPhone is awesome and I would totally get one if it were on Sprint instead of AT&T.

So Long Pre ;)

Since when does the Storm use multi-touch?

I am very happy about this. Now not only will other companies NOT catch up to the infinitely superior iPhone interface, but even if they did they would get sued :D Looks like we are going to see lots more crappy wannabe touch screen phones to come.

And what's with the "Blog" and "Dictionary" apps on the home screen in the image? I would like to have those please Apple :D

I agree that Apple created a winner with the iPhone. But creating a huge buffer zone where no one can even create something that would compete with it defies the spirit of competition. With the Pre, Palm has created the closest iPhone competitor yet (It could arguably be better than the iPhone in some regards). If I had AT&T, I would jump all over the iPhone. I love how it works and so I had to get myself an iPod Touch. But I don't have AT&T and I won't switch to their overpriced and shotty service. I'm looking forward to the Palm Pre so that people on other networks (Sprint at the time of release) can have a good phone and I hope that it will drive Apple to create an even better iPhone.

P.S. how did someone NOT make a huge deal about the "video" icon on the spec drawing? I figure someone would've said "VIDEO RECORDING IS COMING NEXT ON THE IPHONE!!!"

It says Video"s", which is just getting to the videos you have stored on your iPhone. I wish it had a camcorder though haha

I guess you didn't read one of my prior posts. I said the iphone is great, we all know it is. But it is not great enough IMHO to lock down the multi touch genre of phones by way of patents or lawsuits. Now people are saying that a patent really doesn't mean jack, so whatever me and you are bantering about is relatively pointless now.

My point is that if Apple is going to try and defend its "intellectual property" by way of patent and lawsuit, then they damn well better get their iphone in line with what "the best phone" on the planet should be like.

The fact that they left these things out is absurd, and that (hopefully) the THIRD rendition of the iphone might actually possess the most used and basic functions of cell phones across the planet.

And if they are so innovative and prepared for the future, why would they wait until the THIRD version to put these features in? Because they withheld them so everyone who got the first two will have to run out and get the THIRD one? You will have to pay full price too, just like people who weren't up on contract after getting the first one had to do when 3g came out.

First paragraph: That idea makes no sense. It has to be the best in order to protect their property? This is how things work in the world, the only way to defend their property IS the law system. Being best has nothing to do with it.

Second paragraph: No one said that these features are ever going to be in the iphone. For several apple wants people going a different route such as email instead of MMS hoping that it will establish email as the norm.

Of course you will have to pay full price, why wouldnt you? Youre getting a new product, you have to pay for it.

Ah great so apple gets to tell me that instead of me showing someone something or seeing something from someone by way of MMS, I just have to go home from wherever I am and get on my computer. Well, they wouldn't actually be telling me anything as long as I was free to choose another phone but wait, they are trying to shut down that route as well...

So much for it being the "most advanced phone" on the planet then. But hey, as long as apple sues any company that tries to release a multi touch phone that has more (and better) capabilities then maybe it will remain the best phone on the planet. Wow, at least we got the app store.

You and I both know that Apple will have to add these features into the next rendition of the iphone, because even fanboys won't splurge on the same phone 3 different times...or will they...

Vote with your wallet.

And again your not even reading the thread if you think this is about just having multi touch.

And yet again, you place the iphones success on fanboys. I dont know exactly how many have been sold, but I can sure as hell guarentee that there arent that many fanboys out there.

I did vote with my wallet I haven't gotten an iphone and won't until they upgrade "the most technologically advanced phone that can't do MMS" phone on the planet. Although I did a lot voting will all the computer hardware and software I get from apple, but this is a different battle.

It doesn't matter if it is about having multi-touch or not. It is about whether or not Apple has the ability to stop competitors (THE PRE) from putting out a better product which will reveal to the public the JOKE that the iphone ultimately is in its current form.

If apple is able to shut them down, it will prove that the pre did indeed have to copy, otherwise it wont have the legal power to stop it.

Whats it say when the "better" product would have to steal in order to be better?

I still dont understand how you can think the phone is a joke tho. Sure it doesnt live up to your specific needs, but there is no denying that the iphone has deffinatly changed how the game is played.

And I am not denying that it has changed the game. I am beyond that fanboy talk. I see what the iphone is capable of and only wish that it put those features in to absolutely eliminate ALL competition in the market. By doing that they wouldn't have to resort to lawsuits and patents. Looks like they are covering their ass because someone actually has enough of a brain to make a touch phone that has all the basic and most used features available to man.

It is a joke that the iphone is capable of so much yet so little. Imagine an extravagant car that is made of the finest elements known to man. It has all the bells and whistles you could dream of, but has no radio. Oh and it has no speedometer so you can't see how fast you are going. And no rearview mirrors either. Oh, and it can't go in reverse. That car is a joke.

"Hey check out my new ride!"
"Um, Billy, this thing can't even go in reverse?"
"Ahh yeah, who cares though man, look how fast it goes!"
"Um, Billy, it doesn't even have a speedometer..."

The joke on the iphone is its lack of functions and features that is used by all phones in the market. Or maybe the joke is on those who keep buying it.

Your not understanding the situation at all im afraid. Even if they had the absolute best phone out there they would still (as any company would) sue if their IP is being used without permission.

Would you like it if someone came along and took your ideas for profit without your consent?

Palm has failed as an innovator for a very long time. While I hate to see an iconic company go, surviving by ripping off someone else's product is classless.

Well, if you recall, Palm has never been much of an innovator. With the Palm Pilot, they basically seized upon what the Apple Newton was doing. Because Apple/Jobs had no interest in PDAs, they didn't go after Palm. I never thought of Palm as an innovator, but instead of a company who was keeping the original Newton ideas alive... which I do give them credit for. I loved my Newton, and I later bought a Handspring Treo phone because it was the closest thing to a Newton with a phone. (Handspring was later acquired by Palm.)

I've been very happy with the iPhone because I view it as a continuation of the Apple Newton. In my eyes, Palm has lost its legitimacy for copying Apple this time because now (finally!) Apple is serious about the platform.

Didnt palm have PDA's out before anyone else?

The term PDA was an apple thing however.

Copy/cut & paste

So your just going to ignore my points and follow on with your crusade right?

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that copy, cut and paste will come to the iPhone in some forth coming version of an iPhone update. The delay, isn't that Apple doesn't think it is necessary, but rather, what is the best, most intuitive way to implement it. It MUST be done right or not at all.

I also have no doubt that turn by turn navigation with google map integration will come, higher resolution cameras (as the optics improve for such short focal lengths), and video will be added as the iPhone product line is expanded and broadened. The iPhone is only a bit over 1 year old, is already one of the most popular phones on the market. Each software update brings new functionality to a product that, except for 3G support, hasn't changed fundamentally in that time.

As Franky would say..."The best is yet to come..."

This.

A HUGE selling point of the iphone is how easy it is to use with gestures that actually make sense.

No, the Newton was first. I remember I bought one when they first came out in the early 1990s. Palm didn't appear until the mid-90s. I bought the first Palm Pilot too, so, I know that the Newton definitely came out first by at least a few years. And I remember looking through the Palm Pilot features to see what they copied from the Newton.

Thanks for the history lesson.

I thought Palm licensed Newton OS from Apple to start their PDA business.
Sharing development for a time then took it over when Apple Killed the Newton.

But Wikipeadia makes no mention of this History.
Maybe my memory if fading already, but I remember there was some links between the Two companies at the time.

I pray you are right.

So then what will all the fanboys say when these features are added? I have seen nothing but countless numbers of them tell me that these features are relics of the past, and that they are useless and have no future in this phone market...They tell me that somehow Apple is looking out for us by not adding these features into the phone. "Dude, funk an MMS message, its all about finding a computer and logging in..."

Some even applaud [BLINDLY DEFEND] apple for not putting these "basic" features into the phone, because people at Apple are innovators of the future, and all these features are better left in 2004...God forbid they end up putting these things back in in the 3rd rendition.

TO inject a little perspective into this Apple Fanboy lawsuit blood-lust thread...

This is less of a matter of that they have a patent, but whether or not it's valid or applicable and/or whether it will hold up in court.
Now will their patent protect their specific MT commands on the iPhone? Sure. Probably. Maybe.
But the entire multitouch concept? Don't count on it.
When it comes to it as a patent of the multitouch concept in general, I don't see it holding up in court. Why? Because (while I can't immediately cite the specifics) I do know there was a ruling a handful of years back which basically said you can't patent an obvious technological step since (besides stifling innovation) the concept would have come about one way or another naturally (so can't be claimed as intellectual property).
(Maybe it's wasn't an article online but the handful of prelaw classes I took years back.) Either way, Touch screen interface concept has been in the public domain for decades now, and progressing from one finger to many fingers is the next obvious step in the advancement of that technology.
And besides, MT wasn't even first conceived of by Apple anyways. It was Bell Labs, DECADES ago. Sometime in the early 80's.

So while IANAL, IMO HP, MS, IBM etc (maybe even palm) shouldn't really have anything to worry about this and should each still be able to continue to do their own parts to add to the fast-paced innovation multitouch tech is enjoying today. :p :D
