There seems to be a lot of people claiming that the iPhone doesn't require a screen protector to prevent scratches.
A word of advice - if you ever plan to resell your phone - bear in mind that the resale value is entirely dependent on the number of scratches, scuffs and hairline cracks.
Apply a screen protector and a case from day one. Be gentle when connecting the cable to the dock port - most phones develop hairline cracks in the back cover. Fact.
Some people will always say that anything Apple make is perfect and any decision Apple take is impervious to criticism. Ignore them.

oh please - it's a phone for heavens sake.

Just use it as it's intended and get over yourself.

The cat scratched all the way through your iPhone?

I lol'ed. I think he/she meant inch and a half, deep scratch. A deep scratch that is an inch and a half long.

As I mentioned before, I always put a screen protector on my iProducts straight out of the box just to get a matte finish. I don't like seeing myself in my iPod. While the necessity to prevent scratches from day-to-day use is debatable, it certainly helps protect in the "holy crap" random stuff happening moments.

I use a protector a month. Would hate to see the original glass after 3 months of no protector and it is not like they will replace the glass.

My daughter and friend both have iPhones; one with protector, one without. You can hardly read the screen through all the scratches on the one without after just 6 months. Oh, she was told that she would have to pay for the screen replacement ($199), since it was not normal "wear and tear".

The one with the screen protector looks like the day we bought it.

Excuse me for asking, it's your daughter's friend a cat? or does she have fingers of steel?

My case an all the people I know, no screen protector no scratches.

while i like apple and their products, they have increasingly become very communist-like.

Sure, they also had that weird looking RED ipod... I believe it all began with Steve's first trip to China.

Brilliant.

Another example of apple's mental stability. "Our products are perfect, there's nothing wrong with them".

Whats next, you can only have apples official line of accessories at a highly inflated mark up!

The bottom line is that after owning (sorry you don't technically "own" your iphone), i have come to the conclusion that you do need a screen protector. And either way you as teh consumer should be able to decide whether you want one or not. Not apple.

The scariest thing is when i first saw that avatar i thought it was suzy cato. (Childrens show host from way back when.)

I have tried several screen protectors before I found one that wasn't absolute garbage. I can see why these were pulled from the stores...causing problems on multiple levels.

"JC, Apple is the new evil empire for sure. I mean come on, you have a right to protect your investment. That glass screen is far from bullet proof."

Are you insane? The films are causing some kind of problem and Apple doesn't want to be in a position where they sell something that causes problems with
their own product. This is perfectly understandable. If you want to buy these
films you can buy them to your hearts content, just not from Apple. You think Apple is evil because of this? Geez! You apparently have no idea of what real
evil is. Ever heard of Hitler?

I own a touch and a 3gs

never put a cover or a protective screen on the touch, kinda wish i did. apart from the scratching on the back from the silver back, you can see scratches on the screen when it's turned off. keys, pens, other mobiles (stupid work) do have reactions on that screen. if i turn it on, it's hardly noticable, unless im watching a video on the screen, where it's a slight niggling thing, like a dead pixel. it's no big deal, but it's there.

got sent a new 3gs when a small drop of my original landed on a kitchen plate and cracked the screen. :( sent it back for repair and the apple people sent me a new one! since getting the new one back, ive kept a proper backing hard plastic case and a screen protector on the front. sure, there are a couple of bubbles on the front, but it's not that bad. i'd rather deal with that now and keep the phone in good condition. mind you, i didn't pay for the screen protector, it came with the hard case. :)

dont think i'll get one for the ipad, though. that's not going in my pocket any time soon ;) and i will be getting a proper case to put it in, so when I do go away with the thing, it's properly protected, just have to buy one of those special cloths to keep it clean..

I've had my protector on a year and very recently a bubble or something under the glass, bang in the middle, has appeared. How the hell that got there God only knows. I have a year left on the phone contract and I'm thinking of removing it. The fun I had putting it on...

On another note, when I bought my phone, reading around everyone had a protector, so I followed like a sheep, on the assumption it must be necessary if everyone was buying one. But in hindsight I wonder if it really was necessary. Of course there will always be people with tales of how they scratched theirs first day they had it, but I wonder what percentage of people, here for instance, never using one still have perfectly decent screens.

People bought them from day 1 and have never used the phone without one.

They did it because they were used to doing so with palm pilots and other devices.

There was no evidence before the release of the iPhone that any kind of screen protector was necessary. I would say people who have always had a screen protector on their iphone have little to offer in this discussion other then how to potentially waste money. All they can claim is they don't have scratches on their screen, which is the same that many, and probably most without protectors on it can also say. One of the big websites even did tests with the screen and various coming items like keys and coins and such and it was never an issue.

A lot of people did it initially because they did it with previous devices. Somehow those people convinced other people they needed to do it.

I am sure apple has a reason for this, and the support one seems like the most plausible one. So let someone else defraud the public and deal with the support issues related to these unnecessary add-ons. It is likely the support costs were outweighing the net income they were bringing in, so they axed them.

I would not be surprised if at some point in the future and maybe with the iPad as well that Apple specifically starts saying they do not recommend people using screen protectors at all.

With my first iphone, a 3GS, I initially didn't put a screen protector on it because I assumed it was highly scratch-resistant.

Then a scratch showed up a few weeks later. Then another one. Never dropped it. Never drug nails across it. Just scratches from common usage.

So when I replaced that phone, the first thing I did on the new 3GS was apply a screen protector.

I've never had the urge for the screen protector, and friends who've had it have taken it off and regret getting them. Also on the 3GS, the anti-grease apple appled to the glass becomes pointless when you add a sheet over it. It also makes the screen less sharp

Had an Iphone for 3 years. Never a scratch. Carry it in my front jeans pocket. Try to avoid putting my keys in the same pocket.

Those screens just detract from the look too much for me. Guess I either care too much or not enough.

Never thought Godwin's Law would be invoked in a screen protector thread. :p

I actually LIKE the feel of the anti-glare film. Without it, it kinda feels like a glassy surface (yes, i know that's what it is) and with it, it feels more like a tactile surface.

Call it what you will, but my film (at least) offers some usability on my part of the phone...

Unless I'm mistaken, Apple has banned bread and milk since the stores opened.

Please, people, "not selling" is not the same as "banning".

Also, Apple stores have fixed amount of inventory and display space.
With the iPad comes another set of accessories to sell. Tossing several of the 3rd party iPhone ones will give them room to sell more of the Apple iPad stuff.

Brilliant.

And you can still get one, buddy. You can get one from the internet or a Best Buy or even from one of those kiosks right outside of an Apple store. You just can't get one inside an Apple store. Think of it like beer -- you can get beer from a lot of places, but not from an Apple store.

Why ban slavery now ...
Why get a prostate exam now ...
Why invent the internet now ...

What the hell are you talking about, man?!

He raised a legitimate point and this is how you react?

God, some people have lost their sense of reality. They've had no problem with screen protectors until Apple had problems with it. I hope that one day, Apple will come out with a pile of steaming crap with an Apple logo on it, so I can legitimately demand these people to buy into their 1984 joke. - Wait! Apple just done it - it's called the iPad!

By the way, I love my anti-glare screen protector that I purchased from the Apple Store in Southampton. Just like me, hundreds of thousands made the decision to put on an additional layer to protect the screen. Also, with that freaking poor battery, my iPhone's brightness is set to a fairly low level, so there is no chance that I could see the screen outside. So, I needed anti-glare. Let me tell you, Steve Jobs and the other poodles, I would put this screen even on my MacBook Pro, so I could use that outside too. What a joke this mega-giga-hyperglossy screen is!
