The title of this article is technically accurate but highly prejudicial. All retail chains regularly make decisions to drop selling a product or an entire class of products. "Banning" seems a bit strong for a routine retail decision.

"Banning", "ban", "bans", etc., gets the hits. ;)

they don't actually protect anything b) they're a waste of money preying upon unfounded fears that without the film your screen will break

Everyone in my family uses the Power Support anti-glare film for their iPhones. It isn't because we were worried about damaging the glass. It's just that the reflective screen is hard to see outside. The anti-glare coating is a huge help.

I've had mine on for nearly two years now and haven't had any problem with it, and neither has my wife. No bubbles or peeling. My daughter was a bit rougher with her phone, and her film peeled off. But she simply got another and now it's fine.

This is a really bizarre move by Apple, actually slapping the hands of the vendors they had previously encouraged. I don't understand this at all.

Well at least a few posts here understand that a screen protector can have more than one use.

I don't use my screen protector so much to protect the screen, but rather to eliminate that annoying glare. Apple, I know that you think everyone loves saturated colors, and ok they do look nice (except when you're color-correcting something), but really - do you ever take into account the side effects that a glossy screen can cause? Guess not...

And as others have stated - why would you stop carrying something that you KNOW people are likely to buy? I thought you were in business to make money, not give it away...

Interesting indeed.

If they will remove cases such as the Otter Box Defender because it has an integrated screen protector then I feel it's a bad move.

I have the aforementioned case as I wanted something rather rugged for when I'm sailing, and the defender has helped the 3GS hold up very well when it's being tossed around the cockpit or cabin of our boat.

No doubt it would still survive without the screen protection portion, however, one of the other features is some water resistance which is afforded by the screen protector being part of the case, and as you can imagine, sailing does involve aqua.

I can see where Apple is coming from though, as others have said, the protectors give the impression the screen isn't as hardy as it could be, plus the bubbles and such can cause consumers to believe the issue is with the phone itself, rather than the application of the protector.

Who needs 'em

I don't have a protector on my screen. It's a toy, if it scratches badly enough I'll toss it in the trash and go buy another netbook. ;)

No one outside a minority on these forums will actually give a damn. Mostly because it's not really worth caring about.

good riddance

Good riddance. There is no need for them. I've never used one and there's not one scratch on my screen. I think it's interesting how we all take better care of our electronics than our own bodies.

Who knows why they dropped it, and who cares!

And for those that have had unprotected iPhones since like forever and had them in your pocket with keys, change, thrown it around and taken sandpaper to it without a single scratch, you're full of ****! :)

While I don't care about Apple banning screen protectors from being sold in-store, I can attest to the fragility of the iPhone's screen. My 3GS has an inch and a half deep scratch. My brother's cat knocked it off the arm of the couch. I don't know what caused the scratch, but it is prominent. Also, my 2g iPhone had several scratches. Both of my phones have had cases.

Fortunately, even with the scratches, they are not bothersome. In fact, unless the phone is off, I don't notice them.

The cat scratched all the way through your iPhone?

I have never used a screen protector on any of my apple devices and have never had a problem.

I always thought it was silly that people were using them.

The screens on the iphones especially. They don't need a screen protector.

I have had an original iphone since the day they came out. Then I got a 3G. I gave the original iphone to my dad when I got my 3g. He is very careless with this kind of stuff and does not take efforts to protect it. No problems with the screen at all, in these several years. Same with my 3g iphone.

I take sandpaper to it every day no problems..

Seriously though, this was one of the coolest things when the iphone came out, how durable the screens were. That is why I thought people going to such lengths to put films on them seemed like a waste of both time and money.

I know that I gave up on screen protectors. Not worth the cash. I've had my iPhone 3G display naked for over a year now and it's been fine.

JC, Apple is the new evil empire for sure. I mean come on, you have a right to protect your investment. That glass screen is far from bullet proof.

So, buy it directly from a supplier. Apple didn't ban them from the world, just their stores.

PS: the 3Gs screen is oleophobic, so fingerprints are easy to remove; glass is pretty hard to scratch, and a film won't prevent it from shattering when you drop it. The films are a waste of money and resources.

Now, a case to protect the back: sure. That black (or white ;-) is soft and scratches easily.

My first gen iPhone got the crap scratched out of it. My new one is perfect. The only difference was the screen protector. Lame. One more reason not to shop at the Apple Store. I don't know the last time I've come here and seen something positive.

I don't use screen protectors at the moment, but I have in the past and might again in the future. My iPhone screen has a few hairline scratches on it (had it since July). I have a love/hate relationship with them cause the Anti-Glare looks great and removes the glare, but in doing so, it makes the image on the screen appear grainy. But by no means should Apple quit selling them in the stores. I think it could hurt iPhone sales when you think about it. A lot of people want to buy everything all at one place and not have to make different trips to various places. It's a hassle. Yeah, you can buy them online, but there are some who are either not that tech-savvy, or are leery about buying things online. I don't buy this "not wanting to make it appear that they are necessary" junk. They probably feel that it's not how the iPhone was "meant to be used" (i.e. with a matte screen). I'm starting to get tired of dealing with their decisions relating to this topic. Apple needs to face it, most people prefer a matte screen. Get over it.

Sent from my gf's MacBook (Late 2009) Glossy, lol.

Well I have to chime in and say I'm for this move. Those screen protectors are totally unnecessary and super ugly. The entire point of apple's design philosophy is compromised if you have to add cheap plastic to an otherwise elegant device. Especially after hearing about how much thought was put into the design of the iphone screen, it's durability, special oleophobic coating, just to be covered up by a piece of $30 crappy plastic...

Hate em.

Evil empire? Some people really need to get some perspective. Go to Walmart and buy as many screen protectors as you want.

I've had my protector on a year and very recently a bubble or something under the glass, bang in the middle, has appeared. How the hell that got there God only knows. I have a year left on the phone contract and I'm thinking of removing it. The fun I had putting it on...

On another note, when I bought my phone, reading around everyone had a protector, so I followed like a sheep, on the assumption it must be necessary if everyone was buying one. But in hindsight I wonder if it really was necessary. Of course there will always be people with tales of how they scratched theirs first day they had it, but I wonder what percentage of people, here for instance, never using one still have perfectly decent screens.

Clean and Enjoy the iPhone's true Pixel Contrast

Never used them anyway. There is a great touch cleaner called iKlenz that takes care of the fingerprints and smudge and keeps it like new.

In all actuality if the iPhone screen is really, really hard to scratch and you have a great cleaner solution with a microfiber cloth why do you need the screen protector, you have to clean those too anyway. :) Just enjoy the screen and find out what you've probably been missing. :)
