Perhaps, but iFixit still agreed to the contract. I can't get over this comment:

Apparently iFixit's word is not trustworthy and they are only concerned with their own self-interest. I suggest people remember that and ignore their reviews.

Not sure how your response follows from my comment. I was responding to a comment that assigned some blame to Apple for deciding to give one to iFixit. My point was there probably was no human at apple who even knew iFixit received one.

The second part was not in response to your comment. I edited the two sentences so that the two comments are now separate.

On the upside, they save $99 a year? :po_O:D

Love their tear downs and didn't realise they had an App so I don't think they're too bothered.

"The site says the app was outdated and riddled with bugs caused by iOS 9."

Butt.
Hurt.
that's not butt hurt.. nor is it a diss on ios9.. they didn't say ios9 is riddled with bugs.. they said their app is.

as in-- you ever notice all your apps have an update at some point saying 'now ios7 ready!' .etc ?
that's because their app too was riddled with bugs caused by the new os.
it's normal.

That's absolute crap. To think that just because the call it "journalism", they can get away with anything is pure rubbish. And it's anything but traditional journalism. It's profit motivated, pure and simple. Some of you people are so anxious to bash apple that you are completely blind to reality and common sense.
Crap or not, we'll see if it goes to court. If you feel so passionate about it petition for a Friend of the Court concerning this matter if anything files.

I'm totally with everyone who thinks iFixit should've honored their agreement and not torn it down.

At the same time, the above comment prompted me to wonder just what the heck someone at Apple thought that iFixit was going to do with an Apple TV. I mean, their company is not in any way focused on writing apps. They tear down new gear, that's what they do.

Lack of common sense on both sides.

I doubt it was shipped to ifixit. It was shipped to a dev user with a name, not a company. Just happens to be an ifixit employee.

So again... you don't care about facts, you just see people not trashing Apple so you disregard anything they say.

Based on the comment you made about iFixit preventing Apple's "planned obsolescence", it seems to me that you're so blinded by your allegiance to iFixit that you can't admit that they could have possibly done anything wrong.

You'd be far better off ditching Apple and going with companies that give you more freedom to tinker with their hardware. And unlike everything I typed prior to that, I say that without a hint of sarcasm. It doesn't even seem like you like Apple products- why not use products you actually do like? We have more options than ever in this day and age.

Who cares. The whole thing is petty and Apple is just flexing it's power, I mean arrogance. Every time I see Apple act smug, there's always an army of you apologists taking it's side.
seems like youre fighting a fight that doesn't exist except inside your own head.
i mean, these aren't even fanboy type comments you're battling against.
chill out.

I feel bad for iFixit. But why not just wait until you're not under an NDA?

LAME. Apple needs some thicker skin.

EDIT: Oh, my bad. I didn't read the entire article...as usual. If this was a dev kit being lent by Apple, then yeah, they had no right opening the thing up. I've changed my mind :)

I have never seen as many lawyers in one thread, all experts on NDAs.

Either that or a boatload of Apple apologists are out and about.

Haha, you're acting ridiculous. Just stop. You need to chill. This "entire forum" doesn't make up for all of Apple's customer base so I'm 100% certain Apple could survive without the tinkerers.

I've been swapping ODD, Ram and GPU's long before I even heard of iFixit. I've been on Macs for over 17 years. Don't give me that nonsense that iFixit is responsible for most people's computer upgrade knowledge.

They helped me in 1979... I can swear they did ;-), though at that time, there wasn't much to tear down, everything seemed pre-torn :).

Also, they also invented the time machine, built out of spare parts from the Tardis....

I like OS X. I hate the hardware.

Hence Hackintosh. Read my sig.

So, ifixit is just a footnote in the market? laff.

I've signed more NDAs than there are letters in your post, and issued a lot too for my own companies, with the help of lawyers if that reassures you... So, I think I'm OK qualified; thanks for vetting us...

BTW, who are you an apologist for, the gods of non sequitur ?

You and me both buddy. All apple hardware I have bought has been horrible, or part of scandles like radeongate. All my hackintoshes have been flawless.

Out of interest does anyone know exactly what part of the agreement iFixit violated? If iFixit reassembled the appletv and then used it for development purposes with their little app, would they still be in breach? Or is publically reviewing/showing the device in any form enough to do it?

Understandable. I'm a big fan of both Windows and OS X. I prefer OS X and Mac hardware, but I'd still be pretty happy on a custom PC or XPS 13 with Windows 10. Nothing I use is platform dependent, so I guess I'm lucky in that regard.

But hey- as long as you're happy with what you've got, more power to you.

iFixIt may help promote a movement of fixing and reusing, but that has nothing to do with this issue. iFixIt applied for a dev ATV, designed to be given to developers so they can make apps. Apple gave them a dev unit for $1, with certain conditions. iFixIt agreed to those conditions, then broke them, then profited from breaking them. If iFixIt had simply developed their app for the ATV, then done a tear down after the NDA expired (or bought a commercial unit to do the tear down), they wouldn't have been banned. It has nothing to do with the philosophy they're promoting.

People keep saying Apple wasn't hurt by them breaking the NDA. But similarly, the consumer isn't really helped by it either. The only people who benefit from the early tear down is iFixIt, because now they've got an exclusive that drives traffic to their website. It's dishonest. And they admitted as much in their blog post, all while making snide comments about Apple, who did nothing wrong here.

Apple thought they would abide by the terms and conditions, just like they expect of every dev who got an early ATV.
Yes yes I understand. For what it's worth I was just being snarky. :)
