Is it just me, or is the remote loop totally pointless? It makes the remote look like a Wii controller, which I'm sure is what they were going for, but how is that going to be secure? The Wii Remote Loop was there so that if the remote slipped out of your hand, at least you wouldn't throw it through your TV. But the Apple Remote Loop just connects into the Lightning port. If you move your arm with enough force to have the remote fly out of your hand, I'm pretty sure it's going to pop out of this connection quite easily.
Is it possible that the Loop connection to the Lightning port might be a reinforced or otherwise engineered to be practical? I think this is likely the case.

I just placed my order for the 64 GB version. I should have remembered to place my order this morning after getting home from work. I appears shipment dates have already slipped to 3 to 5 Business days. Oh well, my new Apple TV should be arriving between Nov. 2nd. & Nov. 4th. :)

That's the exact shipping estimate everyone has got since the minute it went on sale

question, can I buy this with iTunes gift cards? Today you can get $100 for $75... can I use online or in the store?

Edit: Well just tried and see this
  • Pay with up to eight gift cards
  • iTunes Gift Cards cannot be used for Apple Store purchases

Crap but I think can be done in store

I don't think so. There are two different types of gift cards -- Apple Store gift cards and iTunes/App Store gift cards. The iTunes/App Store gift cards are frequently offered at a discount by PayPal and other merchants. I've never seen Apple Store gift cards offered at a discount anywhere.

Great! The new Apple TV 4 is replacing my existing 3rd gen unit along with our Now TV box that we use solely for Plex.
Almost the same boat as me. I have been running atv3's with Plex for a few years now using plex connect. Works wonderfully, however having native support is worth the price tag for me.

Will eventfully replace the other two in the house with the lower storage versions.

If you're old enough, you saw the EXACT same "it doesn't matter" argument being made when people were comparing 720 dpi to 1080 dpi TVs.

The arguments against 720/1080 were different. With those resolutions, the argument was "it's not that big of a difference to warrant upgrading," whereas with 4K, for many applications the argument is "your eyes aren't capable of discerning a difference."

Take a 60" TV, for example. To appreciate the benefit of 720 over standard def, you only have to be within about 20 feet of the television. To appreciate the benefit of 1080 over 720, you'd have to get within about 12 feet. Most people sit within those ranges, so 720/1080 usually is able to offer a benefit.

But to appreciate the benefit of 4K, you'd have to be sitting no further than 8 feet away from that 60" TV. If the TV was 50", you'd have to be no further than about 6.5 feet.

Many people simply don't sit close enough to a large enough television to perceive any increase in detail from 4K. Of course, moving to 4K would be of great benefit to people running front projector setups and the like (or people who sit really close to their large flat panel sets). But that makes 4K closer to a niche feature. 720/1080 provided an immediate benefit to the majority of TV viewers.

I have a current AppleTV but I probably won't be ordering a new one unless/until it has an Amazon instant video channel. (I own and watch much more content on Amazon than iTunes.) I'm not convinced it is Amazon who is reluctant. I've always thought that Apple was the one not interested in an Amazon channel on Apple TV. Hope I'm wrong.

I expect that to be out shortly, as they can release an app on the app store, like with the iPhone and iPad.

anyone know the deductible for the $29 applecare plan? I have a toddler and curious especially since the remote is almost $80 on it's own. Also wondering if accidental damage is covered.
That's not an Applecare "Plus" plan. It's just a standard extended warranty for repair so there's no deductible and it won't cover accidental damage.

It has to be. And I can't find a picture of it where the attachment part isn't obscured by the model's wrist. WTF? :) The Apple Store verbage says:
The Remote Loop clicks into the Lightning connector on the remote for secure attachment and easy removal.

I got the the 64gb but i'm not even sure why. My rule of thumb at this point is just "max everything out and it'll extend the life of the device".

Does anyone agree or disagree with this?

Those insulting the low numbers of 4K movies available forget we went thru exactly the same rhetoric with HDTV: people making fun of those buying 1080p equipment when there were only a dozen or so HD movies available. Obviously the number of suitable titles did, and will, increase relentlessly. And yes, some of it is poorly upscaled content - that will improve as well, just as it did for HD.

4K hardware doesn't cost that much (early HDTV devices were significantly more than 4K is now). If you have it, you can watch what is available...and what WILL be available when it arrives (that being soon!), while the current naysayers scramble to catch up (and try to find something else to complain about).

That's what I always do, and toward the end of it's life-cycle I'm always happy I did.

Okay, so $149 and it looks to be a really solid device. I just want to know why they do not just include an HDMI cable. That just doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm thinking that the reason for buying an extra remote would be for multiplayer gaming, and if that is the case, I would rather pay $49 for the Steelseries Nimbus wireless gaming remote than 479 for the apple remote.

Hate the new design. Can't believe they changed the form of it to not match the previous generation or the Airport express. Jobs wouldn't have let this product out. I purchased a 3rd gen a few weeks ago even knowing this was out because I prefer it as a product.

lol.

How do you know you will find one in store on Friday? I say just order it online and be sure you get one.
Just going based on the delivery dates from Apple. If you the express shipping , it's saying you'll get it on the 30th which is Friday. Guessing the Apple Store will have them in store that day. Something tells me to be patient and wait to see what happens.

Ps. I'm the guy who has pre orders everything , you know how hard it is not to order this thing right now !

I ordered a 64GB. Will be very interesting to see if Apple can help dramatically expand the smart television/OTT video market, as it did for smartphones and tablets. We shall see...

Nope. iTunes gift cards are for iTunes. Apple Store gift cards are for use in an Apple Store (online or in-store). Won't work.
