Is this credit hold for pre-orders AND in-store reservations? If so, I have a question:

I reserved an iPad for launch day at the Apple store. I am not sure that I want it, but made the reservation anyways, because the reservation via itunes account was easy and it never asked for a credit card number.

Now, I signed up for an itunes account 7 years ago - when a credit card was not required. To this day, I have never purchased anything with my itunes account - so I still don't have a credit card linked to it.

Now macrumors is saying their starting to hold funds. No money has been held from me yet, and I doubt it will since there isn't even a credit card attached. But will I somehow be liable and responsible to actually buy this iPad, even if I change my mind and don't want it. I didn't think so at the time I made my reservation....

Thanks!

Reservations did not require a credit/debit card number like pre-orders do. With a reservation you pay for your iPad when you pick it up. You're not obligated. If you reserve one and don't show up, I'm sure the iPad you were going to buy will be bought by someone who wants one and did not pre-order or reserve one.

So youre telling me...

I could go the Apple Store on launch day with my friends (some who are buying the iPad)- get to be part of the excitement, look smug and pretend I never wanted one. All for free, without having to buy it.

OR

I could always buy it if I wanted to, since I reserved it anyway! Haha!

You could do either or both of those things. But if you want to buy it, get there well before 3PM. I was told at my local Apple store that after 3, it's first-come, first-served and your reservation will no longer be held/honored.

they charged $528 to my debit card for the base iPad model, but my 64GB 3G model couldn't get an authorization because I have a $1000 daily limit on my debit card. I got an email from Apple saying problem with payment. Should I be concerned about this since it won't ship until mid or late April? I assume they will try again prior to shipping. What should I do?

My card just charged (pre-authorization) for my iPad 64GB with 3G and accessories. It wasn't on there this morning when this report came out. My status page on Apple Store still says late April for the iPad. But I'll get the case on the 3rd.

Looking closely at my online card info has nothing under "Temporary Authorizations" but my available credit is down the order amount but no charges.

Looking closer again I was not charged for the IPAD KEYBOARD DOCK-USA + tax. I was charged for the IPAD WI-FI + 3G 64GB-USA, IPAD CASE-ZML & APP FOR IPAD - COL/AE-USA (Apple Care) + taxes. The Keyboard has a ship date of April 15 and deliver date of April 20. So I guess that's why it's not charge yet. But than why is the iPad being charge since it still doesn't have a ship date just late April.

Why does Apple like to mess with us and get our hopes up the 3Gs will ship early?

Update under Temporary Authorizations is now
03/26/10 APL*APPLE ONLINE STORE 882.89 iPad 64GB + 3G + Tax
03/26/10 APL*APPLE ONLINE STORE 105.44 Apple Care + tax
03/26/10 APL*APPLE ONLINE STORE 41.54 iPad Case + Tax

MSFT 1992 or so to 2000. you can't find a better performing stock

I can name two companies that have recently outperformed MSFT's run from 1992 to 2000. GGP which was formerly GGWPQ and DDRX. GGP up 2000% and DDRX around 6000%. I know this isn't a stock discussion but I figured I'd share.

PS: My card got charged 32gig 3g :)

I ordered a 16GB Wifi + 3G on March 12th and my credit card got billed for the full amount almost right away...looks like the 16GBs may ship sooner than the larger models...

I dont think we are getting them before April 3rd but you have to think this means that there is a shot the pre-authorized 3G's may get sent then as well

I have been debited from my Bank account

I can confirm that this morning that my bank account was debited.

I ordered a 3G 32GB iPad on 3/12/10 at 7:49AM PDT with the iPad Case and MobileMe. I already received MobileMe. My AmEx has been authorized for the amount of the iPad but not the case. Last night around 10:00pm EDT, the automatic telephone system said both items were prepared for shipment. This morning, I talked to a live person who said neither are prepared for shipment yet. The case will ship by April 3, and the iPad 32GB 3G will ship in late April. He said they were having some problems between their phone order status system and their online system. Who knows if he really knows what he is talking about or if he's just making it up. My online order status still is Not yet shipped for the case and the iPad with shipping dates unchanged (Late April for iPad 3G and April 3 for case). I called AmEx today to find out what was going on, and they said they couldn't see the details, but it looks like it is a pending charge that has not gone through yet, not merely an authorization. We'll see what happens soon, I guess.

1. They are not Apple's policies. They are the Merchant Service Provider policies.
No, they're not. Apple chooses when to submit the charge to the processor for authorization and for settlement. Pre-authorization is not required, nor does any payment processor have any authority to demand when the merchant actually charges the customer's account. The processor does what it's told.

It has no right or authority to say "you must only charge upon shipment." Its only power is to impose cutoff times for batch processing.
2-3. That was true years ago. Rules and regulations now prevent the vendor from holding certain data from the original transaction.
No, it's still true. You're not holding any data from the "original" transaction because the transaction is not yet complete. Submitting an authorization alone is not a finished transaction.
Unless the vendor (in this case a computer retailer, where they highest credit card fraud is taking place) wants to take on more exposure from fraud they will not resubmit a ticket without consent or written contract to do so.
It's not a resubmission. Resubmission implies prior submission. You can't make a second attempt at settlement without consent, which can be achieved either expressly or by the terms of sale at the retailer. But you can run new authorization checks from the order date all the way up to the settlement request.

You are confusing authorization and settlement. You can't settle twice; you can authorize multiple times without settlement because no money goes anywhere.
4. Nice use of legal jargon, and no attack upon you personally, but yes it is. The process is burdensome for the vendor and requires the same proof that a court of law requires, especially with electronic/internet transactions.
And that is preponderance, not proof beyond a reasonable doubt. If you're going to use a term of art, use it correctly.

I ordered a 3G model on day 1 and I am being charged for mine already. Unless Apple is planning on shipping the 3G model early (highly unlikely), this isn't cool. It's not that I don't have the money in my account for it, I just hadn't planned on it being taken out til mid/late April when it is expected to ship. I also ordered the case with mine and for whatever reason that hasn't been charged, but the iPad has.

Maybe they changed their minds, and decided that they wanted as much iPad revenue as possible on the books in this quarter, not next. So they are charging everybody now so that the funds will be settled and added to their cash-per-share report the first part of next week, when, just prior to midnight on 3/31, they will ship, by some slow method, everything they possibly can to get those sales in the books on time.

Pre-ordered 16GB wifi March 12, 8:31am
Auth for full amount hit my Wachovia debit the same day
Auth fell off a few days later

Auth for full amount went back on last night (or whenever this came back up, I'm losing track)
Auth is still there as of right now, has not actually 'posted'

Credit Card declined; order CANCELLED

I had my card compromised after I preordered and had to get a new one issued. I just got an email saying that they tried my credit card and since it was declined, the order was cancelled. Luckily I was able to get a store pickup order in, which is what I wanted to do anyway.

What happened on my Citicard

So Apple 3/25, is issuing this preauthorization charge on accounts. I get a message from Apple that the charge was declined. Citicard AAdvantage froze my account based on this charge. I called Citi last night and they approved the charge and removed the freeze. The Apple Store almost immediately sends a message that the charge went through.

I get a call on 3/26 that Citicard's Fraud Early Warning System detects a fraudulent charge. It's from a Payee called something like Computer Software Store. I call Citicards again and through research, the agent says the payee is Apple Store and the description field shows Computer Software Store.

I don't know who's screwing up here, Apple or Citi, but anyone messing with my credit cards really (explitive deleted by me)'s me off!!!

Un Done

Oh no my pre-auth for my 3G was un-done making me thing the 3G charges were a mistake, drat drat drat.

of course this just pushed me over the edge to order a 16gb wifi version for the 3rd :p looks like they still have enough stock :apple:

I got an email from Apple yesterday saying there was a problem with my credit card and my iPad order. When I called Apple to straighten it out, the customer service guy told me that there would be a new version of iTunes released on Saturday, April 3rd. He said this version would be needed to sync with the iPad, and download iPad specific apps.

Well, no, of course they can. It's just their general policy to charge at time of shipment. They could easily complete the charge at time of order if they wanted to (as many retailers do).

You are correct that a retailer can charge you for something ahead of delivery, typically being when they queue your order for ship out (but if there are tons and tons of orders it might be a few days before yours literally leaves). However there are federal and state limits on the time between payment and shipping. They can't generally charge you for something today and then not send it for 2 months. Something that came up with the whole JooJoo preorders

the simple explanation is that their transaction system can't tell a wifi from a +3g pre order and was just batch pre-auth'ing all orders. to check for valid cards, available funds etc. doing it now gives them a few days to clean up any errors before actual ship out.

Wow right before it changed to Aprl 12

Looks like I got lucky with my order of the WiFi version yesterday, still slated for April 3rd, but now Apple's store says people ordering today won't get until April 12th!?!?!
