A number of MacRumors readers have reported that Apple has placed preauthorization holds on their credit card accounts for iPad pre-orders placed earlier this month. The holds represent a check to ensure that sufficient credit is available for the pending transactions as Apple prepares to begin shipping out iPad orders.

Interestingly, customers are seeing preauthorization holds placed on their credit card accounts for both Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + 3G iPad orders. The Wi-Fi + 3G iPad models are not scheduled to become available until "late April", and it is unclear why Apple has initiated the transaction process for those orders so early. Wi-Fi-only models are scheduled to launch on April 3rd.

I think I'll still wait as I already have my iPod touch. Although, if some app becomes available that really makes this worth it, I'll bite -- without 3G, of course.

hmmm this actually sounds bad. didn't something like this happen with mobileme and it blew up in apple's face?

My card is being charged for the 3G model already... which I'm not particularly happy about, especially since they already did a pre-authorization for the full amount right after pre-ordering it.

I ordered both a 32 gig Wi-Fi and a 64 gig 3G.

I have separate credit holds for both of these items even though it was one order.

Pre-authorizations are canceled after 3-4 days; they will pre-authorize again and probably "ship" them next Monday.

No doubt some will get them early, although Apple will tightly control delivery through special FedEx or UPS arrangements.

Actually, the evidence that Apple is populating the App Store with iPad-specific apps, the evidence that they are reading books for the iBookstore, and this pre-auth would actually seem to indicate that Apple has learned their lesson from the MobileMe debacle.

In that case, they tried to do too many things at once: iPhone 3G hardware launch, iPhone OS 2.0 release, .Mac > MobileMe migration, and App Store launch.

This time, it mostly looks like a hardware release plus a content release prior (i.e., queued up) to the launch.

While there are risks to Apple's plan, this actually sounds good, compared to what happened a year and a half ago. The July 2008 launch was a clusterf__k and it appears that Apple is taking some pains not to reproduce that debacle.

Why would you not be happy about it, its the same as writing a check and mailing it to Apple and they cashed it, placed your order on back order with an expected ship date. You did want the iPad and pre authorized your card for the charge thereby placing it on pre-order?

People are so used to card companies holding pre authorization, they forget that you shouldn't place the order if the money isn't there, its like writing a bad check.
On the other hand, if your just upset that they are charging your card now, for an iPad 3G to be shipped later, its the same thing as above, a pre-charge hold for merchandise that is being guaranteed to be shipped directly to you. Otherwise cancel the order or never place it in the first place until after it's readily available in stock for immediate shipping.

I was more than happy to place a pre-authorized charge for an iPad, just so I could be sure to have one on launch day. I was charged today about 5:00PM EST, I know this because I set a filter for my online banking to notify me by e- mail when the charge was placed.:apple:

Im glad to finally see the charge go through, it was getting nerve racking wondering when they were finally going to do it. But the money was always going to be in my account ready for it, not like I placed the order without having the funds, thats just stupid.

Damn! My credit card hasn't been charged yet... I ordered a 64Gb 3G... within the first 30 minutes of the iPAD going on sale.... hope to be positively surprised soon!
