Sadly I would't even buy this line of the MacBook Pro at the discounts from the refurbish store. Between the keyboard malfunctions and the lack of connectivity on the one I was given for work..... I just can't see paying premium dollar for a machine that just isn't a premium. I never use the stupid Touch Bar so whatever that is costing in the build process is wasted money. Apple, for real. Please make a truly "Pro" laptop that is well made and reliable again and I'll replace my personal one from 2012. Until then I just can't see spending the money on any version of this new model.

all I heard here was "me, me, me, me" lol

I have to agree with the posters here about refurbished stuff - it rocks!

My current MBP is s refurbished 2016TB and also recently got a 2017 10" iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.
Effectively for the iPad it worked out at a 10% discount on the iPad with a free Apple Pencil (compared to buying new).

All the refurb stuff comes in a sealed box with (presumably) new power adapters etc (they have all the usual packaging).
Looks brand new.
The only downside is if you like to collect Apple boxes with the pic on the front - the refurb boxes don't have the pic :p

The article says the ”The warranty can be extended to three years from the original purchase date with AppleCare+ for Mac

Does that really mean the original purchase date or the date the refurb was purchased?

If it means the Original purchase date, how do you know what that is before you purchase the refurb as you may be losing 4 or 5 months off the extended warranty period.
2. When Coverage Begins and Ends.

Coverage begins when you purchase the Plan. The “Plan Term” means the date your Plan begins as per the preceding sentence and, unless cancelled, ends on the date specified in your Plan Confirmation. Your Plan Confirmation will be provided to you at or around the time of purchase or sent to you automatically thereafter. If you purchased your plan from Apple, you may obtain a copy of your Plan Confirmation by following the instructions and entering your Covered Device’s serial number at selfsolve.apple.com/agreement/list.”

How long does it typically take for BH or Adorama to sell refurbs? Or do the good ones just get sold out from apple store?

In my experience when purchasing many products directly from Apple, the warranty begins on the day the product is shipped, NOT the day it's received.

When purchasing CTO models from at least some 3rd parties (e.g., Amazon Prime), the warranty begins when the product was originally shipped to the 3rd party, not when it was shipped or received by the end-user, which could be months later. (Or years later for out-dated models.) If buying CTO from a 3rd party, be sure to find out when the warranty begins or began. If you can get the serial number of an already-built device, you can look up the warranty yourself on apple.com

So I just got a new 15" MB Pro from Adorama about 3 days ago. 2.2 GHz, Radeon 555X w/ 512GB HD. This is brand new, non-refurb.

Now, for about the same price, can get a refurb with the 2.6 GHz, Radeon 560X. Actually about $50 less.

I can still return the Adorama one, and haven't installed much on it yet. Anyone know how much a difference the specs on the 2.6 Ghz with Radeon 560X adds over 2.2 Ghz and 555X? I won't use it for games much, but most intense thing I'll use it for is Lightroom/Photoshop and wanting to get into video editing a bit. Probably Premiere or Premiere Elements and iMove more than Final Cut Pro.

(Oh, and I can vouch for refurbs. The MacBook Air this Pro is replacing was a refurb and had no problems, no cosmetic difference from new, and full warranty, as has the iMac I bought for a relative just a month ago.)

Oh yeah, I know the AC+ rules are different from when I was buying "regular" AC - I was just clarifying that a (authorized) 3rd party seller like B&H doesn't introduce anything different in terms of warranty, time for AC purchase (or AC+, whatever the Apple direct rule might be).

That being said, it never hurts to mention it again :)

No worries. I was surprised when I got my new MBP the it was only 60 days. Had they not told me I would not known that and missed the window; also apparently there are no longer 3rd party sellers such as BH that sell AppleCare+ as a stand alone product. At least Apple still offers an education discount on AC+.

The best notebook on the market right now. While I haven’t had trouble with my 2016 keyboard, I do think the revision is much better and stable. If I still didn’t have mine under AppleCare I would pull the trigger on an i9/32/1TB in a heartbeat.

I’ll probably end up waiting for the 2020 MBP. Intel may have a 7nm i9 by then or at least a 10nm i9.

Junk keyboard? Tiouch bar?

I’ll pass at any price, and I need a new laptop.

This keyboard is not junk. Go try it in the store. It is super fast, very stable and not prone to the failures of the 2016/2017. It is the best notebook on the market hands down.

There is no keyboard malfunction on this version! I suggest you adopt TB3 now. Type A is a thing of the past and garbage compared to 40Gbps bandwidth. Each port also supports USB 3.1 gen2 which is 10Gbps so you get Thunderbolt 1 speeds from USB.

There is never going to be another user upgradeable MBP again. Besides the boost you will get from a Coffee Lake hexa i7/i9, the DDR4 RAM and PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD will destroy any 2012-2015 machine. This is the biggest improvement since Sandy/Ivy Bridge.

I just use the student discount, I don't feel bad doing that to save $100-200 when I buy a $3k+ machine once every decade.

Hey, Apple's the one who doesn't enforce it and openly allows anyone to purchase from the education website with no credential verification, so whatever.

Refurbished Macs see cheaper than the education pricing. I legitimately get education pricing (university professor) but always buy refurbished when possible to save an extra $100-$200 off education prices.

Or maybe a 7nm A14x

Yes, the extra $100-$200 is nice but items usually take 6 months to appear in the refurb store, yes?

I disagree 100%

I went back to 2015 models, and wouldn't touch these new keyboards. They said after 2016 that the 2017 wouldn't fail. They did. They said the 2018 wouldn't fail. They do.

The issues are twofold. Ergonomics and fundamental engineering design.

This post explains how the 2018 models only delay the failures - and explains how it is not just dust but also poor materials science: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/gen-3-butterfly-keyboard.2127111/page-25#post-26677592

Also - how to actually use the 2016-2018 keyboards ..

Is this a real question?

At these prices you'd just as well pay full MSRP and get it new, let alone if you can find a deal...
