Man I want one of these, no need for one other then want it, at least it'll last several years too. But yeah, its the sexiest desktop you can get, or will be able to get, IMO.

A sexy computer.

You want to use the machine to run software and do some work, or masturbate over a shiny round metal case?

Movie theaters - that's not really apple's typical marketing approach especially for a "pro" machine.

It will probably be out of my budget but I think its going to be a great machine.

why would they advertise in movie theaters for what will likely be a $5000 desktop computer? They need to be targeting people who need these machines not the general public

Because its a trashcan...and trashcans are for everybody

There are complementary reasons:

- Theatres are not mass advertising, and the Tube is not a mass product
- Visual professionals go to the cinema
- This is not a pro machine anyway.

A sign that this is not what professionals want.

Why? Do 'professionals' never go to the cinema then? Or perhaps you mean Apple are not allowed to use their flagship product in an advert to drive up sales?

I think your comment is rather 'unprofessional'.

Its like saying, how dare Omega watches advertise on national TV, because their market is so small?

Stupid

Why would a person who buys a desktop need a more portable one? But wait, then it isn't portable because you have to attach so many expensive external devices.

Stupid design.... it will fail like the cube. But then again... probably not because Mac users who are Pro's only have this one choice ie. instead of a large box where they can install everything inside.

Another reason for me not to use Mac OS.

Depends, maybe they will release additional modules that you can ad to the bottom or top of the MP. So the machine gets larger but fits within the same design. If this is not the case I agree this will probably a Cube-like failure.

Now, answer these questions... did Apple support BluRay or HD-DVD? And when the winner was clear, why didn't Apple throw in with the champion?

The really big HDTV push in the last 3 years has been for 3D-TV. What percentage market share does 3D-TV have? And what percentage of 3D-TV owners use 3D-TV?

I think simply expecting Apple to lead the way toward more pixels is simply selling them short. I believe that Apple will lead innovation toward truly connecting - while actively and dynamically filtering - content for your consumption.

I believe Apple is attempting to do exactly that, and in a meaningful way.

Why was the iMac so successful? Because it easily and quickly and simply connected you to what was relevant. The same can be said of iPhoto, iPhone, iPad, etc.
** Quote Edited down**

All correct and also want to add..
Optical disc Media was already on the outs.
Laptop BR players are notoriously shonky.
Recording onto BR is incredibly slow.
BluRay Licensing was at the time very expensive and hard to implement
It leaves the only moving part of a machine, the fan.

this is beside the point. of course they do go to the movies but the vast majority of the people sitting in a movie theater on any given night will be regular folk who don't need a Mac pro, can't afford one and won't be swayed by an ad, no matter how sleek, for a machine costing north of 5k. So it makes very little sense for Apple to run such an ad in movie theaters targeting perhaps 5% of the audience instead of running an iphone or an ipad ad targeting everybody. Don't know why they bothered with this.

When I go to the cinema I see lot of ads for luxury cars, big watches, expensive beers, and top-range laptops. Perhaps there's something about cinema audiences that advertisers know and you don't? Something to do with the fact they're spending $20-$50 to watch a movie they could see for $5 a few weeks later?

This is not a pro machine anyway.

It's incredible fast. The WWDC demonstration, The Mari Artist from Pixar did was incredible and had nothing but great things to say about it. And he didn't know what was in the big fridge size box they put it in. In my years doing VFX I have never seen a machine behave as smoothly like this ever or handle this much data.

or on HD if you have a developer account it's painting the future on the WWDC site.

We Don't know:
How it handle PCIE over thunderbolt. This NO ONE is sure about yet, and until it is released we won't know Can it aggregate the 6 thunderbolts through its 3 channels. If so it's more than capable of running PCIE 2x16 cards, such as the Red Rocket X. Who knows. Maybe all the discussion will prompt a dedicated PCIE port.

Will the graphics cards be replaceabl? It looks like the ports are on the back flat on the board. It's a new form factor. Doesn't mean they can't be changed

How many specs will they release?

What I will say as I have many times before. Most of the Dozens of Mac pro's I have used freelancing have had close to minimum stock memory in 2 of 8 slots - the most basic graphics card - 1 7200rpm main drive and possibly 1 second work / scratch drive. Companies just don't spec them out or upgrade them. They work them as delivered and if they IT department is harassed enough by the designers, they may get a couple of sticks of memory. This thing is a beast out of the box as they have shown it. It's a pro machine that will actually be usable. Unlimited SHARED external storage. Shared External Thunderbolt PCIE cards. Hell even amazing portability. This may well become Apples most stolen product.

You asked "When was the last time Apple advertised a product that wasn't actually available yet?"

The iPhone wasn't available when that advert was aired.

It had already been officially announced with pricing and release date. Mac Pro has neither.

Advertising this in movie theaters might mean a reasonable (or at least lower than expected) price, affordable to a larger customer base. Hopefully.

No way I'm paying what is likely going to be $5K and up for decent version of the first nMP. I'm sure Apple has been extensively testing this but there's nothing like real world feedback. I wouldn't even consider this until version 2 or maybe even 3.

Meh.....

The only reason I am excited about the launch is that, once launched, specific kexts related to the CPU / speedstep / power management can be released into the wild and I can build my own Hack Pro the way I want. :D

In REAL work/business it's about getting to job done and being compatible and having all options open.
Not how small and shiny the case is.

Uh, it is those things plus a push toward smaller more efficient designs. Use less power and the company saves money not only in power but in HVAC costs. Use less space and we can shrink cube or office sizes.

It's why everyone and their brother is pushing out low voltage and more efficient servers. It's why Intel and AMD are constantly lowering power consumption of CPU's, etc.

This thing is compatible, has expansion for options (Thunderbolt is basically and easily translated to PCI-e), uses less space and power. Win win for businesses.
