why would they advertise in movie theaters for what will likely be a $5000 desktop computer? They need to be targeting people who need these machines not the general public

The first thing I thought about also. But maybe this new MacPro will have a lot more widespread appeal than previous MPs, that were clearly geared towards just the pro market segment. I'm thinking SoHo, small businesses, serious gamers, and ultimate performance seekers.

Just the design by itself, is so revolutionary, that this machine based on design alone, will more than likely outsell any previous MacPro iteration. I'm thinking there's a good chance the basic config might come in at, or just below, the 2.5k mark, which is not that outrageous.

Very much looking forward to seeing the various configurations and price points.

transforms?

if there were an app to transform it, opening its compartments like that, twisting up and out wow, like in the ad, i would also dish out the cash for it but only if.

Can't believe people are saying this is bad marketing to a cinema audience, when the pricing hasn't even been released yet.

Who's to say the base model won't be £1,500 with maxed out BTO being £10,000.

That way, everyone can have a slice of the cake if they so wish.

Maybe it's supposed to be fitting because it's a computer designed to be used by some for movie editing. Apple has successfully generated a lot of hype around this. Meanwhile, my friends came over to my house and asked me if that giant metal box to my left was really a Mac. "I thought Mac Pros were laptops."

Hmmmm....I feel a disturbance in the Force........

I have a rising feeling they are going to do something mad and totally slash the price to appeal to a broader market

Maybe they're advertising to mass audiences because it will be relatively inexpensive, as in PowerMac G4 Minitower inexpensive? $1499 and up? With all that's been stripped out of the Mac Pro tower such a low price isn't impossible. Less aluminum, much smaller logic board and risers, fewer components, and most likely Apple struck a sick cheap deal with AMD for GPUs.
I still have one of those around here, under a stack of paperwork or something.

As I recall it was advertised as a "Super Computer" when it came out, so I tend to pay little or no attention to Apple's hyperbole. Desktop sales are on the way down anyway, I doubt this will breathe any real life into the market

Let's get the thing out and see how it performs, that's all that matters. I couldn't care less about it's being the size of my coffee maker, especially since it doesn't make coffee.

The Ad main aim is pretty simple

Get everyone looking forward to the products to be released by apple this fall.

The wow effect can't be achieved with the iPhone or iPad, it has to be something that looks almost totally new to the eye.

You go online or to the shop and you see what the Ad is all about but then you will be drawn to other products within your pocket range or credit card range:p

It's a brand advertisement first and foremost. The message is obviously supposed to be that Apple is still making the most innovative and coolest looking products on the planet.

It's probably because "I go to cinema, I'm broke, thus everyone going to cinema is totally broke and can't afford anything from Apple" logic. I guess Apple was planning to run these ads before opera performances, but decided that cinema will suffice.

Even if I never intend to get a Mac Pro, the ad may just pique my interest and get me into an apple store simply to see what it is like.

Maybe that's the whole intention? Create buzz about Apple as a whole, and increase traffic into their stores.

movie theaters?

if this thing is going to be monstrously expensive why would they market it to the masses like that?

I'm not saying that the high end won't be outside the realm of a car, but I do believe Apple will have an entry model within reasonable reach.

Same reason why car companies like Audi market the R8 in cinemas and on TV. Yeah 99.9% of the people watching aren't going to be able to afford it, but it gets the brand out there as a power house, at the forefront of their respective industry.

That thing is a beast. I think Apple will advertise the Mac Pro in this way because of prestige. This is about innovation and Apple doing a damn good job at making much out of a niche product. This is about showing a company that can do this.

Do you honestly think Apple engineers were browsing online, saw that router, and said "Wow! That has to be the next design of the Mac Pro!!!"?

I am sure they didn't know about brown design also :) Only in Apple universe, do products from the past copy current Apple products :)

I like companies that worry about their customers, not their shareholders.

Without its shareholders Apple would not have been able to finance its development up until now.

AND it's a proving and testing ground for the technology that will later cascade down into the average consumer product line.

When was the last time Apple advertised a product that wasn't actually available yet? I thought SJ was totally against Microsoft style pre-announcements and hype.

That's the whole problem

Apple want to make things that look like iToys

In REAL work/business it's about getting to job done and being compatible and having all options open.
Not how small and shiny the case is.

That for consumers and the iBuying public.

You want to sell a car to the public make it look sexy
You want to sell a SERIOUS car to go off road in, and tackle all terrain, not stop in deep water and winch itself out of a hole it gets jammed it. You are a professional, looking for serious function.

They are making this look, and marketing it toward the home iCrowd. And we all know they are doing this.

A sign that this is not what professionals want.
