Once upon time when Google Map was only good Map App in town, I said I will never use any Map App other than Google. After using Apple Map, now, apple Map is new sherrif in town. I will not go back to Google Map and same for my mellinium kids who always used Google Map. Now Apple Map is very detailed, likable. My favorite is when on new/unknown road, displaying next few streets with traffic lights and also clear road splitting, exit.

Only if all this magic was going on beyond the US. For the rest of the world, for now, Apple Maps do not offer any of the above useful features.

Yet Google still does it better.

1. Google has a 7 year headstart
2. Apple Maps look around > Google Street View
3. Billions of Android phones contribute to data back to Google Maps (one of many reasons why Android OS is free)

i use goog maps for years
hope aapl maps get better than goog map
then i'll start using aapl maps

Apple really needs to put some on the ground resources into this. The leadership has obviously decided not to though. The roll out of any announced feature takes years. On such an essential app it is pretty ordinary TBH.

It’s like all they have is some old guy and his dog slowly wandering the world getting the data for an update. And his attitude and approach to work is retired in place.

LOL. Apple has thousands of employees working solely on maps, 4K in India alone, and they have spent tens of billions building their own base map from scratch after their horrible start cobbling together disparate services.

Apple is committed to the best in class, that’s why it will take whatever time is necessary before rolling out new features. That’s also why their newest features surpass Google maps, e.g., Transit directions which are customized to each location and more accurate than Google who just rolled them out all at once. Most recently, Look Around blows Street View out of the water. Once you’ve used Look Around, Street View is painful and almost useless in comparison.

every country is relative and different to each users experience. Some cities have better API's and connections to public transport, some cities have more roadworks, some cities have better user data providing accidents/traffic indicators, road times that influence ETA times (e.g, google using Waze user aggregated data). It also depends on how fast the city is changing it's streets.

Everyone has a different experience. I think one day in the future all of this will equalise.

What are you talking about. They started their world mapping from zero a couple of years ago. Google had a huge head start because Apple trusted them to be a good partner and provide robust services. They were instead forced to become a Map data provider because Google decided to hold them hostage to promote Android at Apple’s expense.

I just wish they‘d finally ditch **** like Yelp and create their own Apple Maps Locations system that users can post images and reviews to. Using Apple Maps for anything POI related here is impossible because you have like 3-4 data providers on one street alone and they all want you to download their app to view any info about the POI location...

That‘s literally the only thing I use Maps apps on iOs for, finding bars etc while in a city. I always have to open Google Maps for that. I don‘t use any Maps app via CarPlay because I prefer my cars navigation system over Apple/Google Maps due to the tight integration with my car.

Google maps seems more detailed.
But if you compare them closely, you will notice that Apple sometimes has partly overtaken Google...
After all, Apple is investing a lot of money, because these maps will be the new basis for some of their future projects.

Someone who has no idea how much effort it takes to create maps will always complain about the slowness of the creation process. Out of naivety and attitude to life. You're different there, dear Theyayarealivin.
Can’t say this enough. my brother worked in the map making industry and this is not as simple as people think.
it‘s good to have choices and competition.
and ...
I’m still using Kakao map LOLz

So, Google does it better, got you, thanks.
Point #2 literally says Google Maps doesn’t do it better than Apple Maps. Did you even read it?

You tried to “get me”, but you failed. 🙂

I’m done talking to you. Have a nice day.

They literally do have “ground resources”. https://maps.apple.com/imagecollection/

“Apple is conducting ground surveys with vehicles around the world to collect data to improve Apple Maps and to support the Look Around feature.”

Look around is far better than street view

I’m confident that that’s up next. Getting the base data in house is the obvious priority but once they do, they can start getting users to build on top of that with reviews and photos of points of interest.

There could be a tie in with the Photos app where machine learning identifies photos of food and correlates that with location data for a restaurant to suggest the user share it along with a star rating.

I already disliked Yelp before for forcing you to install the app to view any useful information but lately they’ve really shown their true lack of character, using workarounds to identify users who choose to remain anonymous with Sign In with Apple and putting in roadblocks to prevent users from using it. See the Sign In with Apple thread. I cant wait to never use Yelp again.

I believe they do.

Waze is the best

Agreed, unmatched for road layout/driving conditions accuracy. It just needs a visual overhaul, IMO, as they did not change much over the last two years or so... Also, Waze’s routing algorithm is aimed at speed of getting there, while Apple Maps’ routes tend to be easier to follow and be more driver-friendly, so I prefer the latter.

I lived in Austria until recently and did a lot of driving in Austria and Germany. Google was great for POIs, but awful for navigation. Apple's POIs weren't great to begin with but got a lot better in recent years. The navigation on the other hand was always excellent. Near my house Google would always want me to make a left turn and then a U-turn at the next intersection, instead of just turning right in the first place. Also Google rarely knew about road closures, but they were present in Apple Maps.
Right! Google Maps tries too much and ends up being overly cumbersome while missing the little and simple details. There is an Edeka nearby (been there for a few years). Google Maps showed a completely deserted plot until early this year. Like I did with their search, I’ve gone for a cleaner alternative which serves my needs without a navigation headache.

In what way does CarPlay navgation fail to integrate tightly with your vehicle?

The navigation system of my car integrates with various technologies and car features, like offering info in the heads up display, showing an AR lane guidance view or simply telling me that my fuel is getting too low for the remaining trip & proactively telling me to go to gas station X.

That and the fact that Mercedes has yet to offer goddamn wireless CarPlay... hooking up your phone via cable is so 2010 when your car has wireless charging for mobile devices.
