Agreed. I would say this is a major *******-up by Apple.

Yeah, I can't believe they stumbled this quickly after Jobs left the CEO slot. Maybe that's an unfair statement, but you have to wonder why they thought they could deliver the 4s and not disappoint customers and shareholders. It would have been wiser to delay the announcement until December (or whenever) and deliver a real hardware upgrade.

Wow. Some of you have a real sense of entitlement.

Most people will buy an iPhone on contract, which locks them to two years before they can look at a new handset, if not longer. Ergo, a refresh within those two years is perfectly acceptable to be a 'speed bump' - it means those who are using the 'old' model don't feel totally out of date, but for those who are mid-cycle on their upgrades they get enough of a difference.

iPhone 3G - iPhone 4, big jump
iPhone 3GS - iPhone 4S, big jump
iPhone 4 - iPhone 5, big jump

See the pattern? You're not supposed to be replacing your phone every single product release.

no other way around it

no 4g and same old boring design

hello samsung

Sadly, they'll still end up selling millions of these "Verizon iPhone 4 with A5 chip" iPhones. The company will remain highly profitable, and as arrogant.

Steve, if you're listening, then please give some guidance to these people running the company... otherwise it's all downhill from here in terms of innovation.

I don't get it. Do ya'll take rumors as fact?

The real fact is this is a very nice upgrade.

You didn't lose anything.

There is nothing to be "disappointed" about

sigh

I disagree about the screen

It's the other phones that are too big screen wise 4" confused with cheap tablets./

Iphone screen is ideal especially if you have an Ipad too! :D

Especially if you have the hands of a 13yr old.

The point is that Apple had the chance to nail Samsung, and make a better phone. Now they just made it equally good as the SII (apart from the plastic and OS, obviously).

I wouldn't say Apple necessarily blew it, but it wasn't the iPhone I was expecting.

We have to remember this is pretty much the same thing that happened with the 3GS so it's not like it's never been done in the past.

I think that Apple wants to make the 5 a truly new product with the new screen, new hardware and LTE functionally and since the LTE chips aren't on par to apple standards they couldn't be implemented at this time and to be quite frank if they included LTE in the same design we probably would've been upset about that too. We have to remember that it's not the hardware that makes a iPhone but it's the software and at least were all getting iOS 5 which should be a great update to hold us over to the 5.

In my opinion this isn't a phone that I would upgrade ti if I have a 4(which I do) even tho the Siri stuff is pretty cool, this is like in the 3GS case. Only a good upgrade if your 2 yrs behind but this definitely won't have me waiting in line and spending the extra money. I'm content with my 4 especially after next wednesday.

Sorry fellas but you have to be pretty damn biased to view this as anything but a major disappointment from Apple.

They took over a year to bump the specs, improve the camera and add siri? The first two were givens, as every upgrade equals improved specs and a better camera, and Siri, while admittedly a nice feature, is really just Apple tackling something they didn't properly address with the iPhone 4. OS updates to Android will shore up their voice recognition to make them at least on par with Siri, and you can bet on that.

The biggest issue, is I see it, is finding some way to justify purchasing the 4s when you KNOW next year will bring a true redesign. Who is going to pay 400$ on a phone with a two-year old design?!

And keeping the 3.5 inch screen...that's ********. That is entirely Apple appeasing the app developers by not fragmenting the marketplace with multiple screen resolutions, choosing app profits over satisfying customers. For every one person posting that they are "satisfied" with the 3.5 inch screen, there are 10 or 20 screaming for more screen realestate.

If this update had been released in June...fine, I could've swallowed that and accepted that the 4s, like the 3gs, would be a gap year...but making us wait THIS long for what amounts to a minor refresh is a huge let down

How big should a phone screen be though? You have to draw a line between phone and tablet.

4" is a big phone. When you think the size of screens on phones started out small.

I do think its safe to say they sorta blew it. The 'lust' factor to make current iphone owners buy the new phone just isnt there. I see no real reason for iphone4 owners to stand in line for this. But as far as jumping to android, thats a stretch. I think a lot of you saying so are all talk. From what ive heard, people who leave iOS for android come to regret it. But yeah, Apple messed up. I have a 3yr old 3g so im getting one but those of you with newer iphones might as well keep your money.

so is there actually going to be an iPhone 5? Or is the iPhone 4S it?

That's a good question, but we don't know. I only can give you my opinion and I think there will still be a iPhone 5. It's just weird now because usually the number of the iOS went with th number of the iPhone so now it it probably won't be like that.

So basically to answer your question I think it will be because it would just be silly to call it a 4s which means a faster 4 and just skipping to 6.

I really like the looks of the iPhone 4 so I'm happy that Apple kept this look for another year.

Seems like the keynote speeds were based on GSM. The iPhone 4 on AT&T is fast now speeds on the 4S will be faster on HSPDA.

Frankly wireless speeds on cellular are a "who cares?" affair for me. Why should anyone need faster cellular speeds when you're limited to 2GB per month? Fast WiFi speeds are good, but 3G is good enough for the surfing you'll be doing with a measly 2GB per month, IMO.

wtf is wrong with them. After such a long time just a new processor and better camera? I mean honestly I don't need that ****. I want a bigger screen, new and fresh design and much more battery or something else that matters. At least one of these points. But who was not satisfied with the speed or who cares about some games with better graphics?

So let's add it up: you want a faster processor driving a bigger screen, you want it in a sleeker, presumably thinner new design, and you want much more battery life to boot. In other words you want the impossible. Stunning that you're disappointed.

Battery technology is a major bottleneck here, and unlike Google and all the Android OEMs, Apple is not willing to compromise on battery life. Which I'm totally fine with. My friend has an Android phone with a gorgeous huge screen; it's a pleasure to look at. Too bad he has to carry two spare batteries around with him everywhere.

They did the same with the 3GS. Sold like hotcakes.

Why would you buy any technology in that case? There's always something better round the corner.

Ah yes. Made up statistics that support your viewpoint. Please, provide real evidence that it's a 20:1 ratio for people wanting physically bigger screens.

If this update had been released in June...fine, I could've swallowed that and accepted that the 4s, like the 3gs, would be a gap year...but making us wait THIS long for what amounts to a minor refresh is a huge let down

Oh no! Four months is such a long period of time...

While I'd rather it be called the iPhone 5, the 4S does seem to have pretty good features. I'm pre-ordering and upgrading from my 3GS to the 4S on Friday. I'm looking forward to having a much faster speed, since compared to my iPad. I'm also really tired of the 3GS camera, and I'm looking forward to the 8 megapixel with flash. This does make me wonder what they'll call the next iPhone then? iPhone 5, or just call it the iPhone 6?

Did you even watch the keynote? I bet you didn't...

Lets see:
-Browsing on par with 4G speeds from a 3G phone.
-Amazing power and great battery life.
-Siri is honestly cool (which is funny because I thought I'd never use it).
-New and improved camera.
-New iOS

How is that not a good improvement? How did Apple blow it? I hope you realize technology doesn't evolve as fast as Macrumors readers think it does.

The iPhone 4 is almost 2 years old. That's an eternity in smartphone years.

It's very disappointing but as I'm a Dev, I'm still sticking with Apple. Fingers crossed for better things next year.

This is HUGE for devs. The free 3GS is going to bring a lot more people into the iOS ecosystem. For me, that was the biggest announcement. The phone sold well at $99. Apple has a good chance at having the 3 most popular phones on the market, giving the majority of each customer group exactly what they want. For developers, this means significantly more money being spent on apps.

People expect too much. If you want something amazingly better go invent it.

1. Its nowhere near LTE speeds - end of story! Your argument is ridiculous.
2. See above - great battery because its using ancient technology for its radio. Use LTE then brag about battery.
3. Who cares? How big do you really want your video/pictures? Samsung has this already, so does Moto. Late to the game!
4. Same iOS on all iPhones that are decently new. Not really relative to your argument.
