In all honestly, what does the iPhone 5 do that the 4S can't. Other than slightly taller screen and LTE what else does it do?

It's not for me to decide for others, bud. Personally, I've moved to an S3, and am *extremely* happy with it. Best phone I've ever used.

Others will prefer a 5.

It's all good.

This is true, but you would have to suspect Apple would have supply based on at least last years demand. It also knows it is at the end of a quarter. It has to pack in a lot of sales to beat expectations.

There are too many factors here to assume anything like that. Maybe this new design makes the manufacturing process harder? I assume it would honestly. Maybe they had a low supply of parts from manufacturers. Maybe manufacturing did not start until late this year? Just don't assume anything.

I am locked in to an Apple ecosystem. After spending 10+ years as a Network Engineer using everything from Linux, Novell to Windows (my setup at home was Win for the most part) I enjoy the slogan "it just works" when it comes to Apple. I don't have those issues I use to have with MS. My current 4S has rocked for the last year and I have no worry that my 5 will keep me happy for another year. I know it will take me 20 mins to resync and boom I'm back up and running on a faster sleeker phone.

Also what the hell else do you want a phone to do? Widgets? Larger screen? NFC (really NFC is your big complaint?!?!?) I got an NFC thing from one of my credit cards and NEVER used it. Status light? Wow. Seriously if these are the "needed" things there are other phones out there. Maybe instead of focusing on what it can't do, maybe focus on what it can. Yeah it's an iPhone 4S redesigned and spec bump but what did you expect. The 4 is a 3GS with a redesign and spec bump. It seems like if Apple came out with a 5" triangle phone people would be crying "the iPhone 4 design was so innovative why did they change it!!!" They can't win.

I hated my android phone because it locked me into Google's ecosystem and Google has no interest in preserving my privacy. Also, it was loaded with all kinds of crap apps that I couldn't get rid of.

It does just work and with iCloud I can synch my iPhone, my iPad and my Mini effortlessly. A lot of kids probably throw away their older photos and documents and contacts but for us older types who have a lifetime of them, it makes sense to stay in the same ecosystem. Continuity is very, very important to me.

I honestly don't know what all the whiners want. Attention maybe?

I really might move to the S3 or S4 when ever that comes out.

So there are people that like Macbook airs, pros, and Imacs etc and hate the Iphone?

Doubt.

Don't doubt.

I don't "hate" the iPhone, but I have bailed on iPad for a Nexus and iPhone for an S3. Meanwhile, you'll have to pry the MBA from my cold dead fingers - its simply the best personal computer ever made.

Horses for courses.

..the S3 ive held so far, its the perfect size for a phone, unless you have tiny hands, but , i guess apple knows its products are aimed at the teeny-boppers now, real people who want value for money, and who earn the money through hard work, want a product thats good value..
I have very large hands. I've held an SIII and it feels absolutely ridiculous in my hand. If I want to carry around a tablet, I'll buy one ;)

Tenny-boppers? Are you serious? I've lost count of the number of brainless chavs I've seen carrying round a Samsung. I know at least two people who have bought an SIII purely because they refuse to buy an Apple product. I asked one of them why and she said that Apple rip off customers by having too many phones and bringing a new one out every year (I'm serious). I then pointed out that there were 3 phones currently available from Apple and 25 from Samsung :D

Had apple released the iPhone 5 at a sensible price (i.e a price to carriers that allowed them to offer it almost free on contract, like the android device makers) i might have been more inclined to look at it, but im not signing up for a 24 month contract AND have to buy the phone.
The reason I'm willing to pay an upfront charge for iPhone is because..
1. It has a much higher build quality.
2. It has a much higher re-sale value.

iPhone is available free on contract from certain UK retailers by the way..and if you shop wisely, you can offset any upfront charge by using 'cashback' sites ;)

How many crap apps are you locked into with the iPhone, and I think their privacy is just as bad. Apple makes great products but I have not been really happy with the 4S quality wise.

You're wrong. I'm typing this from my MBP 13", with my SGSIII in my pocket. I hate the blandess of ios and love the functionality and freedom of android. However I like the hardware of the macbook and OSX is a very streamlined OS. Just because you have to like both doesn't mean other people have too. I enjoy my macbook yet I hate iPhones. Just thought I'd let you know, also I'm not the only one like this on this board, or anywhere else.

I'd just like to comment, that Android owners are generally more technologically advanced and knowledgable than iPhone owners. Look at the software community based around android compared to iOS. Not to be sexist, but there is a reason so many women use iphones.

Why do I have some slight feeling that you were one of those people who complained about the leaked designs and claimed it could never look like that.

Nope, I absolutely thought the leaks were legitimate. Didn't pipe in once actually, my posting activity here tends to be in spurts, right after a new big release, and then I go back into hiding.

I will say, I couldn't really tell what the finished device would look like based on those leaks, but the moment I saw the marketing video, I was SOLD. I think it is by FAR the best looking iPhone or smartphone of any sort yet, by far. That's my aesthetic opinion of course.

How different is the 5 from the 4/S besides being taller, they look simular.

You're falling further and further behind, mate. Why do you need a screen to enter a destination address? *Tell* it where you need to go. ;)

Apple gets a LOT of things right, and deserves credit for that. Mapping hasn't been one of them.

Sorry, you're flat out wrong, c-n-p has been in the device for, literally, years.

DAG NABBIT. ;)

Do we know if you'll be able to initiate turn by turn direx via Siri? Then we BOTH be happy! Literally! :D

You "older folks" need to then learn how to use a computer. It's not hard. I'm sure they offer workshops from where you live. You don't need iCloud to synch everything. Plug your device into a computer, and go from there. Also in case your wondering, Google has this thing called Google Drive, and just like iCloud, it uses your specific google id to save everything. It's very similar. I'm starting to doubt you had an android phone at all, because everything from the app store to mail, uses this google id, just like on ios where you use your apple id for everything.

That Was Easy...

At 2am central time I was ready to pre- order my iPhone 5, I grab my iPhone and my phone is dead! I quickly grab my iPad and download the app store, I then quickly order my iPhone 32gb and by 2:08am I'm done. Within seconds I receive a email from apple confirming that they received my order and it's being processed. In the words of Staples.... That was EASY!* D21EF5D4-1CFC-4141-BC26-228DC0CE8691-834-000000396BC5A3DE.jpg

No, they don't, anymore than "younger folks" need to learn how to adjust timing on an OBD-less car engine.

That's just old school thinking...

you are confusing anyone who does not worship the iPhone automatically hates it.
Liking something better does not equal hate.
Old Apple fans loved the products because they were different. Now it is why old Apple fans hate new Apple products because they are not different.

Everyone owns an iPhone even grandmothers. At what point does it not become cool anymore.

How different is the 5 from the 4/S besides being taller, they look simular.

The rear is totally different, and those highly-polished chamfered edges are PURE class. I even think the bottom looks significantly better, with the new speaker grills and Lightning port. I also have a sense of what the heft of the thing will be like, given we know that it is thinner, lighter, and has less overall volume, and I know that is going to feel really nice.

I think the black one kind of looks like the monolith from 2001. :D

The buttons are the same, the sides look the same. And to be fair the 4S is too small and light as it is. I could not see myself liking something even smaller.

I have a feeling that many of the folks whining about the new iphone 5 are those who aren't eligible for an upgrade...

Your comparing apples to oranges here. Literally everything today is run by computers. So yes you need to learn it. Why would I have to learn to do something without an OBD? Every car today has them, and low and behold most of them are computer systems.

I will be eligible in 6 months, doesn't mean I will run out and buy one tho. In fact I might move to the S3.

In all honestly, what does the iPhone 5 do that the 4S can't. Other than slightly taller screen and LTE what else does it do?

It has a better rear camera, and a higher resolution front-facing camera. It also has a faster processor. It's thinner and lighter, and it doesn't have glass on both the front and the back. The display is thinner, so there's less glass between you and the display, or between your finger and the touch screen.

Also, the iPhone 5 has the new dock connector, which is smaller, and you can plug it in either way.

What is there to doubt ? I don't like the entire Apple line-up. Some of their products I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, others are meh compared to the competition and some I like enough to own.
