I wonder how many millions all these marketing geniuses companies are worth. You all seem to have such an amazing understand of what apple is doing and since their products are nothing more then a repackaged, rebranding of the same thing with nothing more then "buzz" keeping this company going it should be very simple for your company to sell millions of widgets the first weekend. If not hold a couple back and create a false supply and demand and boom your stock is trading at $600 a share! Seems simple enough.

You all sound like a bunch of crying 10 year olds. "My dad is stronger then your dad!".

I am locked in to an Apple ecosystem. After spending 10+ years as a Network Engineer using everything from Linux, Novell to Windows (my setup at home was Win for the most part) I enjoy the slogan "it just works" when it comes to Apple. I don't have those issues I use to have with MS. My current 4S has rocked for the last year and I have no worry that my 5 will keep me happy for another year. I know it will take me 20 mins to resync and boom I'm back up and running on a faster sleeker phone.

Also what the hell else do you want a phone to do? Widgets? Larger screen? NFC (really NFC is your big complaint?!?!?) I got an NFC thing from one of my credit cards and NEVER used it. Status light? Wow. Seriously if these are the "needed" things there are other phones out there. Maybe instead of focusing on what it can't do, maybe focus on what it can. Yeah it's an iPhone 4S redesigned and spec bump but what did you expect. The 4 is a 3GS with a redesign and spec bump. It seems like if Apple came out with a 5" triangle phone people would be crying "the iPhone 4 design was so innovative why did they change it!!!" They can't win.

I think some of you need to step away from the computer and away from MR for a few days and see Apple from the outside and take some emotion out of it. You all take things so seriously and personally I don't understand how you even sleep at night. Do you get this upset when Tide changes their package too? It's just a phone, it's just a product.

Stop being so emotionally involved and realize its nothing more then a damn screwdriver. If you don't need anything screwed in but need a hammer then get a hammer and stop saying that a screwdriver sucks because it can't hammer a nail.

According to Apple I thought consumers were stupid and would confuse the iPhone with Samsung devices. So why did Apple sell so many of these if the consumer didn't know the difference. Wasn't that Apple's argument in the lawsuit.

The 5 is clearly an improved phone over the 4S.

But it's still the same-old same-old iOS that looks more and more dated with each passing season.

It's time for something new...

You may be visually getting bored with it, but it has made huge improvements over the years in terms of overall functionality. Remember when you couldn't even copy and paste? Pretty soon you'll wonder how you lived without turn by turn directions (which look slick as heck btw with the great vector graphic animation of 3D buildings) and Passbook and a number of the other neat things iOS 6 brings to the table.

Changing the look and feel just because you're kind of bored of it would not be a good idea, because it would mean having to learn new ways of doing things, when the ways that have been developed are quite intuitive and efficient.

A little "window dressing" wouldn't hurt though, I do agree there. Lock screen widgets would be something useful, would spruce it up a bit, and maybe alleviate a bit of that feeling of "it's getting a bit stale." And I'm not a big believer in pinstripes, I could totally get behind "The iOS pinstripe purge of 2013." :)

Let's see how many end up buying the lumina 900 thinking they are getting the new iPod nano. Gotta love hypocrisy!!!!

Well said. :)

Apple has become great at the hype machine. They could sell a tin can and a string and call it the iPhone 5 and they would sell millions of them.

This. If people didn't like big screens, the iPad wouldn't be selling so well. The iPad is basically a giant iPhone.

if that were true, I'd hold my iPad to my face when making a call, but I don't. I think that's a huge generalization.

I barely browse websites on iPhone, I'd prefer an app (like Facebook, even if it is slow even after the update, and sports apps, etc.) to using Safari on iPhone. I don't do this on iPad. Also, on iPad I use Penultimate and Note Taker HD which is not something you would use your iPhone for. Reading journal articles and papers on iPad is a lot better than iPhone, so much so that I generally don't open pdf files on iPhone unless it's something 'quick' when I'm on the run or something.

In my case at least, there's distinct advantages and uses for each device.

Remember when you couldn't even copy and paste?

That was, literally, many years ago.

Come on, that's the *past* for turn-by-turn. iOS is in huge catch-up mode on that application, and still lagging. I don't even look at the screen of my modern turn-by-turn - it *tells* me exactly what I need to do, right down to changing lanes ahead of time, no need to take eyes off the road at all.

Anyway, each to their own. Differences make a market! :)

Apple's claim was that Samsung was being deceitful.

You sir! are definitely the user Apple wants in thier ecosystem !!!

You're forgetting - this tin can and string phone would still be better quality than any Samsung, htc, Nokia, or other phone out there. Which, is a big part of the reason I buy apple devices.

By your reasoning, GPS units wouldn't even need screens other than to enter the destination address. I'm fairly sure the vast majority of GPS users at least glance at the unit's screen to get a sense of what the street layout is. Now, I live in a thing called a "city" and in many cases, the street layouts can be confusing. I also travel between multiple cities regularly, including Washington D.C., which is hella confusing. Auditory-only directions would be INFURIATING for anyone, dealing with those roundabouts! The 3D vector buildings, well, I think it's going to make a lot of people happy. And having the Siri voice giving directions, that is great, because I think she has a sexy computer lady voice.

Also, I condemn you for inappropriate use of the word "literally." Don't be one of those people.

Or is that what Apple wants you to think? Have you used any of those other phones?

You basically proved my point, that you would just blindly buy anything Apple sells.

Apple has become great at the hype machine. They could sell a tin can and a string and call it the iPhone 5 and they would sell millions of them.

They could do that, yes.

But only once - and this is the iPhone 5.

Clearly they are providing something that many many people find worthwhile.

The internet speed is ten times as fast as the last version.

The CPU is twice as fast.

The GPU is twice as fast.

The screen's color representation is significantly better.

The camera is better on multiple fronts -- very slick panorama, shutter speed, sapphire cover, better lens system.

The whole darn thing is way less prone to breaking due to the new construction.

The Lightning port, I think, is going to evolve into something quite useful, and it appears to be way better functionally than the 10-year-old Dock Connector.

The speaker and microphone system looks to be much better.

It's thinner. It's lighter.

It has a larger screen.

Based on all of the above, I'm pretty sure in addition to looking SEXY AS HECK, it's going to be a very, very big improvement in terms of overall functionality.

Why do I have some slight feeling that you were one of those people who complained about the leaked designs and claimed it could never look like that.

In all honestly, what does the iPhone 5 do that the 4S can't. Other than slightly taller screen and LTE what else does it do?

You're falling further and further behind, mate. Why do you need a screen to enter a destination address? *Tell* it where you need to go. ;)

Apple gets a LOT of things right, and deserves credit for that. Mapping hasn't been one of them.

Also, I condemn you for inappropriate use of the word "literally." Don't be one of those people.

Sorry, you're flat out wrong, c-n-p has been in the device for, literally, years.

The fact that it was sold out in an hour just means supply was less than demand. If they had 2 and got orders for 3, it would be sold out. It has nothing to do with record-breaking sales figures, yet at least. The initial supply just might have mean a lot less this year. This is no information until they quote actual pre-order unit sales.

For all we know, Apple might have just held back supply to purposely say they were sold out in hour for publicity. I'm not saying that's the case, but it's possible. :)

This is true, but you would have to suspect Apple would have supply based on at least last years demand. It also knows it is at the end of a quarter. It has to pack in a lot of sales to beat expectations.

I find comments like this pretty sad. Sorry - but the hatred some people have is just ridiculous. Both companies make excellent phones. No need to HATE either one. Or make fun of the exploitation of children.

It's funny isn't it? Immaturity.

It can drive the stock price just on hype alone. That will then drive sales.

It's just PR. Sold out of how many tho? Weren't the displays from Sharp delayed thereby causing the inventory to be smaller? The plot thickens.

I can't that there really are people who waste their time with this kind of thought.

Were 4S numbers 'just PR'? Remember that delayed product that didn't come out until 4 months after it should have?
