To hell with this update because the graphics on the 13 inch models sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Intel HD 3000 is garbage!
I'll keep my late 2008 13 inch Al macbook thank you. Nvidia rocks!

What exactly do you do where the HD 3000 makes any difference whatsoever to you?

Beside the fact I'm almost sure that the current dual core i7 options in the macbook pro, with Intel 3000 or not, will smoke all around a old 2008 Macbook Core 2 2.2-2.4 with Nvidia graphics esp an Nvidia 9400M

A dual core i7 1.8ghz will smoke a 2.8+ghz core 2 duo

Probably a nice little surprise for those planning to purchase a MBP these few days, but still not enough to dissuade me from hooting a MBA. :p

Looks like the Tuesday release tradition is the first to go after Steve.

It ended basically right after the intel transition. While most updates are still on Tuesday, a significant amount are not on Tuesday, in fact the previous release of the macbook pro was on a Thursday, not a Tuesday.

I'm happy all round, bought a 13" i7 2.7 ghz mbp 2 months back, and don't feel too cheated. I knew it had to be updated soon anyway, and this round of speed bumps is actually pretty good. thumbs up apple :D

I'm confused... how can the 17" have been "bumped up" to 2.5 GHz i7 maximum, when my 2010 17" MBP is 2.66 GHz i7?

When the 13" MBP hits 1440x900, it'll be worth the money.

So my Air retains its value for a bit longer. :)

Anybody calling this update "uninspired" or "disappointing" hasn't been paying attention to Apple's strategy over the past 4 years. Even MacRumors has written about Apple following intel's "Tick Tock" paradigm of a major update followed by a minor boost. This is the minor boost, and I would expect next year to bring us a major change of some sort. Whether that change means unifying all laptops into the Air form factor, or something else, is to be seen.

But, this update is pretty much exactly as expected.

I'm currently using the early 2008 MacBook pro, and I'm looking for an upgrade soon. Should I upgrade now, or wait for Ivy Bridge? I'm thinking of waiting, since I'm able to get by with this computer as of now, but I really want the extra power and disk space.

I think these are a different chipset revision aka a little faster than the previous i7's Ghz vs Ghz

Oh yeah, I think you're right. I remember they switched chipsets at the last revision. Thanks.

So I guess this update doesn't make me feel too jealous of the new models :D Even though the new chipset is probably superior, I still have more hertz! That's all that counts ;)

Different processors and different measurements of clock speed. Quad core laptop processors run at hugely different speeds depending on whether 1, 2, 3 or 4 cores are used to avoid melting the laptop. But the number that Intel tells you is the number for 4 cores, which is the lowest of those numbers. If only two cores are in use, it will run faster than your 2.66 GHz.

The biggest disappointment of this bump was the optical drive, namely the fact that it's still there and you have to take it apart(which isn't allowed for a lot of company owned laptops....) in order to put two disk(ssd/hd) in there.....

Whilst I agree, this ain't going to happen in a spec bump release. That'll happen with an entirely new design, most likely next year. If I was after a mbp and wasn't absolutely desperate I'd definitely wait.

As for the old "don't buy version 1.0" thing, my late '08 15" launch unibody mbp is still going strong, an all around excellent buy, although admittedly it's been relegated to torrent and media centre duties since getting a spanky 2011 mba.

I updated my post, not just a chipset revision, yours is dual core, these new ones are quad core, so now you can cry hehe.

That's always a tough call. I'd say get it now, because it's always hard to be disappointed with any new mac. If you wait, you will be desperately pining for the next release (which could take up to a year).

Because the 17'' uses a quad core.

Ohhhhh, you're right. I missed that too. Ok, damn, now I'm a lot more jealous.

Can someone tell me how the newer HD 6750M with 512 MB GDDR5 and the older HD 6750M with 1 GB DDR5 compare, especially for running games?
Is the 512 MB DDR5 much of a difference? If not, my next Mac will be 400 dollars cheaper! (difference between the 2199 dollar version and the 1799 dollar version, don't care much about HDD space.)

Glad to see improvements at the same price.... just wish I could have them on MY computer  oh well.. I'm happy with what I have.

Same here. I got a new high end 15" about a month ago. At that time, there were no rumors of a refresh. Oh well, it's not like the difference was that much from what I got. I'm sure I'll survive. ;)

Which one?

O hell, my local Apple Store just cut prices on all previous models with €200 (let's say $200). Now what do I do?

I'm in the market for the lower 15" model, but is it worth it to buy the new one? Or should I just take advantage of the offer and buy last week's model?

Ouch!

I ordered a new one on wednesday, should I cancel my order or expect to receive the new one?

The upgrade for the high-end 15" is only 0.1GHz and a slightly faster GPU. In my opinion, the high-end 15" and 17" models are the least impacted from the new refresh.

I would be a lot more bothered if I purchased a base 13" since they also increased the HDD capacity. And I would be the most bothered if I had purchased the base 15" model since the 256MB 6490M was severely lacking compared to the 6750M.
