So this is just a Tesla now? I don't mean "just", but it's pretty much what a Tesla is.

I just purchased a Tesla for the first time recently and the design/function really reminds me of Apple. Most notably the lack of buttons and physical controls in the car, and just one big screen in the middle with no driver dash display behind the steering wheel (Model 3 and Y at least). At first I thought I would hate it, much like the first iPhones (first phone with very few buttons), but I find myself preferring it to the point where I go into other cars and just feel like they are cluttered with buttons and knobs everywhere.

I think Apple would be better off developing a killer automotive software package that integrates CarPlay/Autonomous Driving/Vehicle Displays/etc. than a stand alone car. Apple isn't likely to create a category killer device like they have with existing products.

A car would require creating a whole infrastructure to sell and service them, it's not like you can pull up the the drive through Genius Bar,; and it s a market where there are a lot of brands with loyal followings. A BMW/Porsche/Full Size Pickup driver, for example, isn't likely to jump at the chance to buy an Apple Car, even if they have an iPhone.
Yeah but what car brand is going to turn that over to Apple? And when has Apple ever been a piece of tech in someone else’s product?

"Internal delays, development scaled back, launch expected 20xx"
"Apple ramping up Apple Car hiring, development on track"
"Latest design rumors, patents filed, key staff confirmed"

Despite living at a time where a new Apple product line is less a month away from releasing, for my own sanity, I simply have to believe that "the Apple Car" in particular is just not happening.

My interest level in a self-driving car: ZERO. Cars are meant to be driven. If I don't want to drive I can call an Uber, Lyft or taxi or get someone else to drive. If I have to choose between having a Porsche and owning a self-driving vehicle my choice is already done.
How about if your car goes out and earns you money. Would that be more interesting? I too agree that if I'm in the car I'll prefer to do most of the driving. But I like the idea of my car, when I'm not using it (which is probably 80-90% of most days), could drive off and do some pickups for a bit of a side hustle. 🙂

I know UBER & LYFT want self driving cars to be the norm so they’ll never have to pay human drivers again. But this reality is not gonna happen anytime soon. There are just so many issues with self driving vehicles. With regulatory hurdles And infrastructure to support it. Tesla recently had to recall all their self driving cars. So it’s no surprise Apple is shifting their focus away from it too. If we are to transition to all electric future, the EV infrastructure needs serious help. It’s just not there to support all these EVs. Not everyone has a house they can charge their EV overnight.

The Apple Car Ultra will cost $333,333.
The Apple Car Pro will cost $222,222.
The Apple Car will cost $111,111.

Which one are you planning on buying?

The Apple Vision Pro Apple Car Simulator App for $49.99.
I'll be able to drive anywhere in the world from the comfort of my potato couch.
Looking forward to racing around St. Marks Square in an obnoxiously loud Ford Cobra punting annoying tourists into the canal.

I wonder if the EU will force Apple to make their car charge via USB-C 🤣 😂

In any case, while Apple support their devices for a long time I do worry about Apple being able to support their vehicle long term. eg will the car still get updates 8 years later, will parts still be available, will you be able to even change a part, will they address issues (they are difficult to acknowledge and fix bugs, I've been trying to get them to fix a WatchOS bug since the day it first came out and it's a BIGGY), etc. I'm just not sure they are suited to making a car, that's an entirely different industry.

At this glacially slow rate, this alleged car's technology will keep being surpassed by competition and this will never be announced.

Always be closing.

They have tried to do that and tend to get blocked by competitors like Google. When Apple announced CarPlay features far ahead of anything Google had Carmakers decided to hold support for 2 years to allow Google to catch up and then offered them together.

I don't claim to speak for everyone. I speak only for myself.

I was just agreeing. I can see ICE cars being banned soon, and electric cars seem to be synonymous with self driving tech. The feeling of driving a (proper) Porsche down a twisty road will be gone for ever.
