Has to be cheaper than a Tesla.
By then the Model 3 should be selling like hotcakes at $35000. Apple is a premium brand, I would expect their cars to go for more than that, whereas Tesla's plan has been to start selling premium cars (Roadster, S, X), but with the aim of moving down towards the mid-range. In any case, we still have four years to wait (although an announcement will be made before, if the project materialises).

The problem with an apple car is, apple expects 50% profit. So, yes, they could build something like a BMW i3, but they would have to price it like a tesla to get that 50% margin. Who would buy an i3 at tesla prices? No market there.

But you're assuming their margin expectations are the same. Still, with out-of-the-box clever design and Apple's manufacturing expertise/background/resources they could still reap large margins.

I have to say, from the moment I first saw it, that i thought that BMW i3 is without a doubt the ugliest modern day car I've ever seen.

and yet tesla STILL loses between 10K and 25K a car

Now, if they are looking to be a major supplier of onboard OS's or communication and in car technologies well then that is a different story entirely.

I don't buy this because who are they going to supply this OS to? The Daimler CEO said last week he wasn't going to become the Foxconn of cars and wouldn't outsource the car's brain" to Apple or Google. Ford has decided to bypass Apple and Google as well. I can't imagine any car maker wanting their car "brains" being the same as a competitor so what would Apple do, design different "brains" for different manufacturers? Has Apple ever been successful supplying software to other hardware companies?

The i3 is such an ugly vehicle, why can't manufactures make a decent looking electric vehicle. Telsa is the only one that doesn't look like total crap. Just my opinion.
I agree.

Model 3 will never be 35K. Never ever...

*** If the Apple Watch Edition went up to $17,000...I think the car will go for $90k ( like Tesla) and go up to $150k

Sure, there could be a luxury model at $90,000 but Apple is the type of company that prices products within the scope of the average consumers' ability, albeit on the higher-end.

sorry for your feel good but electric cars have more of a "carbon footprint" than the gasoline engine.

The blanket claim that electric cars have more of a carbon footprint than gasoline engines is neither supported nor claimed by the original source, which you can find if you click through (also here). It is false.

However, what is supported is that electric cars' carbon footprint can be worse than that of gasoline engines in the wrong circumstance (you'll see the original research is specifically for China). (See here for more info.)

It's too easy (for both sides of an argument) to hear just what they want to hear. Please… dig deeper.

I'll bet my home that this thing will come with a proprietary charging cable, and no, it won't be supplied with the vehicle.

Apple is speeding up development on its electric car project, reports The Wall Street Journal, giving it a "committed project" label and targeting 2019 as a prospective shipping date. To facilitate a faster launch, Apple will be greatly expanding the number of people working on the car.Apple has already been aggressively hiring for its car project, poaching employees from companies like Ford, General Motors, Tesla, Volkswagen, and more. Many of its recent hires have expertise in connected and autonomous vehicle systems.

The BMW i3, which Apple reportedly considered using as a base for the Apple Car

Though there have been indications suggesting Apple is exploring autonomous vehicles as part of its car project, The Wall Street Journal's sources say the first car Apple releases will not be driverless, with that functionality perhaps coming at a later date.

There have been also other signs pointing towards expanded work on the car project. In May, Apple began looking into secure facilities in the Bay Area where a prototype could be tested, reportedly meeting up with officials at GoMentum Station, a secure test facility for connected and autonomous vehicles. Apple also met with DMV officials in August to discuss California's autonomous vehicle regulations.

It remains unclear if Apple will develop its "Apple Car" from the ground up or if it will team up with an existing auto manufacturer. Rumors have suggested Apple has held discussions with BMW over a potential partnership that would see the BMW i3 used as the basis for the Apple Car, but those talks have reportedly not progressed into a deal.

The Wall Street Journal warns that Apple's 2019 target date might not be the date in which Apple will actually ship the car, instead suggesting it could point towards the date that engineers confirm the main features of the product. It's also possible that given the scope of the project there could be delays, with "people familiar with the project" expressing skepticism that 2019 is a reasonable target date.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert last week, Tim Cook was asked about the car project, but he unsurprisingly avoided the question with a vague statement. "We look at a number of things along the way, and we decide to really put our energies on a few of those," he said.

Does this mean, Apple will upsetting the AppleCar-t?

The Outback will be impossible to beat by any car Apple could bring to the market until 2030 at least, if ever.
Yeah, I doubt they will have something that size in AWD for a while. I just really want something electric. I'd spring for the Tesla Model X if I had the cash. It officially comes out really soon! Hopefully in another 10 years an electric, small AWD SUV will be affordable. I like the safety of something a little bit bigger, but that still handles like a car, can drive decent in the snowstorms that we get, and can haul kids around town and on road trips to see family.

I agree.

Model 3 will never be 35K. Never ever...
It will be late (like all Tesla cars), but they haven't moved their price target, so we can expect the entry model to start at 35K (of course, the high end S, X, Roadsters will still be very expensive).

You can already get a Model S for ~63000 thousand new and for quite a bit less than that if you don't mind it being CPO. By the time they achieve full economy of scale with their new factory, it's quite possible to get to that price mark within this timeframe (again, Tesla being Tesla, delays can be expected)

Before the iPhone came out people said the same thing. The cars of the future won't be like the cars of today (see Tesla). If companies like Uber and Google are investing in cars why shouldn't Apple? Building a car certainly isn't in either of their wheel houses either.
Tesla is exactly like Cars today.
The fact that they are electric is the only difference.

1 - Lets start with throwing out the gas tank and ICE and replace it with a battery and motor.
2 - Do away with the driver - have the car drive itself.

Tesla did #1 several years ago and says they'll be 90% done with #2 by the end of this year. They said they'll be 99% done by the end of next year and that by the end of 2017, the car will be completely self-driving in all situations.

So if Apple releases a car that requires a driver in 2019, even if it uses a battery and motor instead of a gas tank and ICE, it'll still be a car of the past rather than a car of the future.

Apple needs to be a lot more aggressive with this if they want to beat Tesla at it.

Buying Tesla instead of doing it from scratch makes a lot more sense in my mind.

90% done by the end of this year.
Are you joking.
Software 7.0 will come out next month and it is like 10% at best.
The only thing the car can do is follow other cars on the road and switch lanes (which is only semi-automatic).
It's little more than active cruise control with lane assistant.

Real autonomous driving requires so much more.

haha... oh ok i get it "speed up 2019" launch date

There's a hidden message in there.... well done MR.. :D

escape the police more often with Apple and self driving cars.

I mean, if its anything like Apple music, then they should stick to what people have experience with, then trying to do it from start.. but if Apple actually knows what their doing this time, then it may be ok..

If the Apple Car used Apple's directions as they are now then it'd be making more than a few illegal turns.

Plus maybe a turn into a river.
Yeah, if it's using Apple maps to know where it is going it'll take a lot of work to get me to trust it. The first time I tried Apple maps it told me to turn into a field so I gave up on it for a few years, tried it again and it told me to turn down a set of railroad tracks and now I'm waiting a couple more years to give it another try.

I predict $30,000 starting price. $40k max starting price.

Hopefully they do pre-orders :D.
If they actually pursue this as reported, I predict a royal ass-kicking as Apple finds out the hard way that the automobile business has very little in common with consumer electronics. My guess is this story is just more PR fluff released to elevate the stock price and keep a smile on TC's face.
