Should Apple ever produce said car, the price will knock everybody’s jaw to the floor. o_O

Sounds like an ambitious project. Although, Apple does have a good track record in:

-power efficiency
-sensor technology
-supply chain efficiency

Does this translate into being able to produce a vehicle? I don’t know, but they do have expertise that would be beneficial to innovations in this market.

Maybe this site shouldn't post "sketchy" rumors.
I don't understand what you mean. How do you define this as being 'sketchy'? It has been reported on forbes, reuters, 9to5mac, CNBC and more...

What are the requirements of a rumours to not be 'sketchy', and worthy of an article on the prestigous macrumours.com ?

Apple is definitely working on tech related to cars. But will they ever actually put out a car? That's a whole 'nother question.

Apple works on tons of stuff in its labs that never see the light of day.

Also can't help but feel the car thing is a vanity project to keep some engineers around who might otherwise leave.

Reading this article does get me seriously hyped. The line of it being similar to the first time you saw an iphone especially, I have honestly never had that feeling about a consumer product since the iphone. Technology has stagnated the last few years imho. Even next gen consoles are just like better resolution and FPS and the graphics are a bit more shiny, but not profound change from what I can see, in the whole experience.

The originaly iphone definitely felt that way when the first time I saw it I just thought 'wow, this is the future', it felt like such a leap at the time as something just a year before I would never have thought would become a product so soon.

If apple do manage to pull off an apple car that does truly bring down the cost of electric cars down to make it more accessible for the masses, and not only that, but makes it a great car as well with amazing featues, safety, design, and comfort, then I believe it would be apple's greatest ever accomplishment by far. It would steal Elon's thunder for sure, but I bet he would be the first to applaud it.

I do however remain enormously skeptical. I'll never believe this until I see it. There have been so many apple rumours over the year that amounted to nothing (remember the apple TV (as in an actual TV made by apple) rumours for so many years?). But I do absolutely hope this one turns out to be true.

they couldn't make AirPower but they sure could make a brand new revolutionary battery...?

story is pure BS given the timing of Tesla being inserted into S&P500. sounds like a short seller trying to save itself

Of course they could make AirPower. Apple chose not to, likely because of rapid commoditization and downward pricing.

They have zero experience with this and Tesla has been perfecting it for over 10 years.
and even then, tesla's are riddled with problems

and how does apple make money off of this? their whole business model is around selling hardware for the sake of getting consumers in their ecosystem to sell them either accessories or software

since the cars would obviously be priced so high normal consumers wouldnt afford them, they cant make much money selling accessories. And software? Apps for cars arent as lucrative as apps for phones/tablets. And its likely anyone who would buy a car would already be in the rest of the ecosystem for other subscription services.

I used to be excited about the prospect of an Apple Car. As a huge apple fanboy since the late-90s, anything with an apple logo on it I wanted to buy even the market-duds that really weren't sold at a good price or features to penetrate the sector.

But as I get older (34 now) and I have owned more vehicles (400 horsepower hot hatch (Golf R), Corolla, Camry, Faux-UV (ford escape) Wagon (golf estate), maxima and now a Hyundai Ioniq fully electric, I don't think Apple is capable of making a car that will really solve any issues or appeal to the general public.

This car will need to be sub-50K, will need to best Tesla at design, service, support, buying experience and it'll never have Tesla's super charger network and it will need to be flexible enough to not require apple service stations and repairs. Sort of like how I'm glad Apple never tried the MVNO route with iPhone, I'd like / prefer Apple to make a platform and license that to others struggling to compete with Tesla. AppleCar becomes a platform other companies can build on top of with self-driving AI technology and infotainment along with crash test scores & range that better Tesla then we can get the Bolt EV, Ioniq and E-Golf, aka sub-standard RVs onto a platform that allows them to compete with Tesla and for Apple to get their experience in more customer hands without apple having to do any of the 'car things' that they'd have to do.

if Apple can make a platform (hardware & software) and license it out, then they don't have to worry about warranties, support, service, financing, leasing, charging networks. They basically become like Bosch or Denso in that regard.

I remember when Steve Jobs wanted to to be insanely great at a few products. I feel like Apple is trying to be a Swiss Army knife at technology. That doesn’t work out well. Ask Microsoft.
There is a presentation from 2006, where Steve bragged about how Apple is everywhere. I’m going to paraphrase it, because I don’t have it directly in front of me, but he basically said:
“Apple in your pocket with the iPod.
Apple in your office with the Mac lineup.
Apple in your den with the iPod Hi-fi
Apple in your living room with the Apple TV.
Apple in your car with iPod connectors.”
And this was around the same time that Apple was pushing the iLife thing.
So maybe in the 80s and 90s, and even the early 2000 ‘s, his goal for Apple was to make a couple insanely good products. But, I would say by 2007 when they change their name to remove the computer, he had a completely different vision for Apple. A VisionWare, Apple would make everything in your life simpler.
The iPhone for when ever you’re on the go or you just need it.
The iPad for sit and chill sessions.
The Mac lineup for working.
The Apple TV for your living room and bedrooms, or pretty much wherever you need one.
HomePod and HomePod Mini to keep you connect at all times.
HomeKit also for your home.
Apple Watch for your health.
So Apple helps you manage your home, manage what shows you’re watching, manage everything on your phone, your professional work, your health, so why on earth doesn’t it make sense for them to get into transportation.

Even if all that is true, there is no way Apple can enter the market with a great product. They have zero experience with this and Tesla has been perfecting it for over 10 years. This is not like a building a phone.
So no, even if I would love to see Apple's take on a car design (which most cars are ugly af), then there is no way I would buy one. Maybe 5-10 years down the line when they get experienced enough and work out the bugs then I could maybe be persuaded but by then Tesla will be miles ahead.

Right now, the only sensible EV choice is Tesla. No one is even close to them.
And when Tesla's new battery tech is out that will be the same like iPhone vs Android.

But, curious to see the design. Copycats will start xeroxing and all consumers will get nicer looking cars. Its a disaster right now.
I mostly agree with you, but I would definitely not count them out. People said the same thing about the iPhone in 2007.
that it was too expensive, that Apple had absolutely no experience, that BlackBerry and windows mobile had way too much of a grip on the mobile industry, and not even 2 years later, blackberry and windows mobile were basically left in the dust by the iPhone and android.

Tesla fans shouldn't fear or hate on this, since first of all it's still just rumors at this point. More competition would be better for them. As far as the stock manipulation, it's all part of the game.

Apple fans shouldn't hate on it either, first lets see how it goes. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it.

At the end of the day, I'm sure those who are interested will buy it and enjoy it, it's another option. I'm excited to see what becomes of this.

This reminds me of Apple toying with idea of making television but never saw the light of day.

Good for consumers that another tech company is making EV aside from Tesla. Tesla’s build quality is subpar even to this day.
