It's that ready availability that's a big issue for Tesla. You have to *really* want one now. We've been considering getting a new car for a while and I've been looking at different options. While I'd consider a Tesla Model X, the delivery time was saying something like mid 2023. I'm willing to wait a few months for a car but not a year and a half, sorry. Not when I could get a BMW iX within a few months that's better in every way.
The BMW iX is going to be worth almost nothing few years down the line while the Tesla will retain a large amount of its original price.
I would wait for the Tesla.

After dealing with a nightmare when my rented Tesla stopped working (some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced), I'm now fully convinced that Apple can be a big contender in this market.

lol... Keep dreaming. Apple's car will be 3rd rate compared to Tesla. How are they going to use their "custom design" marketing when the suppliers are all inferior to Tesla?
Who is going to make the octovalve for Apple? Who is going to use the gigapresses? Who is going to make a battery comparable to the 4680 cells?
Apple's business model only works when the suppliers are separate entities from the OEMs so that they can buy the best technology in the market. Their business model doesn't work when the one with the best technology is its own supplier and has no plans to be a 3rd party supplier.

I always love it when people run down the shortcomings of an unannounced product that doesn't exist. LOL

First of all, the person who dreamed up that concept car image is really bad at it. That looks like Jony Ive pooped his drawers, looked at the mess, and designed a car to look like it. Second, if I want a personal computer I’ll go with a company like Apple that has been building them for 40+ years. If I want an automobile, I’ll go with a company that has been building them for many, many decades, not an electronics company that has NEVER built one!

Looks like a mouse. lol

Gawd, I hope the tires aren't Apple spec tires. If I get that car, the first thing I'd do is change out the tires for something with real treads. I ain't a fan of hydroplaning.

I wouldn't mind those tires on a dry race track though; looks grippy on dry pavement.

I have a Chevy Bolt EV. Have had it now for 3 years and really like it. But if I had to do it over again I would have bought a Tesla. To me, the big advantage of the Tesla is the charging network and much faster charge time. What it takes me to charge at a level 3 charger in 45 minutes, Tesla can get in less than 15 minutes. Also with non Tesla super chargers, there are a number of companies out there, and each one with it's own account and method of paying. Often you spend 10 minutes trying to get the charger paid for and going, or at times you drive to a charger only to find it's out of service. With Tesla, you just plug in and charge, the charger reads your car and your account is charged. No need to fumble around with apps or cards.

I hope they use another brand at least. Seeing the apple logo on the car looks kinda strange.

Make sure you sign up AppleCareCar with the purchase.

If the price is right I’ll be the first one to get it with my Apple Card.

Where? Do you know know high-level engineers personally that have been working on the Apple car?

You can’t compare phone industry to the auto industry. They don’t even go together. The auto-industry has been out in this world for over 100+ years.

You forced me to do another Google search and this is what came up 🤥

Do you think that a lot of news articles get published when "X engineers hired for unknown Apple project"?

I think this lives or dies on contract manufacturing.

The question is which car manufacturer has the scale to deliver on an Apple car without hurting their own car sales? - It's not like with Foxconn, Pegatron and Winstron who Apple use to make their current products. Those guys don't make and sell their own computers, phones, tablets.

Which manufacturer can you think of that makes cars for everyone else and not for themselves? - Why do you think Tesla had to build their own factories instead of simply having GM, Ford, Nissan or another big player make their cars for them?

This is the biggest thing Apple has to solve. Will Foxconn make car factories for Apple? is the opportunity that financially lucrative? - All questions that need answers.
Magna is the most well known contract manufacturer in the automotive business. They have built a lot of specialty cars for the major manufacturers.

I firmly believer the most CCS charging cars destined to fail because CCS chargers seem to hate colder States! What the heck Electrify America/Canada why oh why still on CCS charging vehicle travel along route 80 or 90 across the country? Then in Canada others are stepping up to fill the gap on Ma0ps ob highway across Canada!
It looks like EA has plans to add a lot more stations across the northern US and southern CA.

You're not going to get better quality from another manufacturer.
Tesla is as good as you're going to get. Otherwise, enjoy the shoddy build quality from the Japanese and their exploding airbags or the exploding bolts.
Japanese = shoddy manufacturing?
Tesla = quality?

Yet somehow Tesla is 27 out of 28 and there are a whole lot of Japanese brands at the top.

You are posting a lot and sounding a little desperate to portray Tesla as the perfect manufacturer and everyone else as crap. Why is that?

Oh, I see. You have $10M in Tesla stock and we should believe you are an unbiased commenter.

I'm of a couple different minds on the Apple Car.

On the one hand, I'm all for additional competition. I hate (particularly artificial) monopolies. As a matter of principle as well as from the practicality of experience, I am against any company mergers, especially if we're talking about major corporations.

On the other hand, I'm not convinced Apple should really be in the auto market. I'll quote from Star Trek VI: “Just because we can do a thing, it does not necessarily follow that we should do that thing.”

This concept by Vanarama looks very cool, I appreciate the higher ground clearance and what looks like the perfect amount of body panel use, specially around the front bumper, looks great!

There are some hardcore Tesla fan-people in this thread. Tesla will likely become a Porsche-type specialty brand. Everyone is switching to EVs and there is no way Tesla will remain dominant. Already Porsche Taycan, Ford Mach-E, GM, Audi, Mercedes, Hyundai, et al are making EVs that rival or beat Tesla.

It appears Elon Musk is alright with other competing manufacturers because Tesla is opening its charging network to non-Tesla EV vehicles.

Japanese auto companies are far behind Tesla when it comes to quality. Tesla innovated with the octovalve, gigapresses and various other manufacturing techniques that the Japanese can't hope to compete against.

If Apple does go with Japanese suppliers, the Apple Car will be inferior to Teslas. Hopefully the Japanese don't create another Takata disaster that kills people.

Tesla and quality ?

I will wait for the Pro Max version and monthly updates to patch issues with steering and throttling.
Go home Apple, you're drunk.

Why would towing be a problem? The cybertruck is more powerful than gas pick-up trucks.
What is range with a reasonable tow for the Cybertruck? It won't be 500 miles..... 30+ minute stops to charge (after waiting in line for the chargers - which WILL be an issue) every 150 miles will get old fast.

Can you replace the bed on the Cybertruck? Just accessing the front of the bed without having to climb over the contents in the rest of the bed is annoying enough. The design was not created by someone who uses a truck like one. The design is not as useful as, say, the Ford F150 EV.

What do you mean the transition isn't happening organically?

It's being pushed by government. Things like this:

That isn't the market pushing it.

The average daily mileage in the US is just 40 miles. So for most people, range is not an issue and in fact for many charging at home they might never need to “fill up” away from home ever again. Charging time is dropping too. The Hundai Ioniq 5 now charges 10%-80% in just 18 minutes. Range is increasing too. The Lucid will have a range of 500 miles. The record cross county cannonball run for an EV using standard public chargers is just 44 hours! Things are rapidly evolving. Expect Apple to jump in once the dust settles.

It'll be fine as a commuter, but not a general purpose vehicle. Of course, I've never owned a "car" (as in a sedan or coupe) and don't intend to.
