Carplay is whatever. If you've ever been in a car with a good infotainment system like a Tesla, or Polestar. Carplay is a luxury. Of course if you drive crap cars you'd want it
What makes CarPlay of value, familiarity. Me, tired of learning to many systems. If one was to buy two cars from different manufacturers, two completely different environments. Rent a variety of cars to see the point. The integration is an extension of the iPhone, I choose which app I want. Apple Maps or Google Maps an example. Nothing to do with how good or crappy the cars are. A good app value only good if used. The end of the day, familiarity will always win.

I bought a dongle to use CarPlay with my Tesla and, well, I was really unwhelmed. There isn't a whole lot of functionality there, and that really surprised me. You just get to control a few iPhone things you might want when driving. The UI was really basic, too. I was anticipating additional functionality for driving, or something.
That's really the point, it's not a new UI for your car. Though, in my car it does integrate into the dashboard as well.

Honestly, I can't believe there are still people telling people like us that we just don't understand why we need CarPlay. If they don't have a use for it, so be it, but to start telling us why we don't need it is insane.

That's not true, modern cars have phone integration without carplay, even 10 year old vehicles have it.

You do you, but your car doesn't need to have everything your phone has, it's honestly better that it doesn't.
Without CarPlay, the best we could do would be to use Bluetooth but that ends up forcing you to use your phone's screen while driving and why do you think that is a good idea? Yes, there are things on the phone that are worth having while driving. You may not see that but many of us do. How good are Tesla or GM's podcast players? Yea.

It's not just about Maps and Spotify.

I dont define my taste in vehicles based on CarPlay or not... I drive a Tesla, and imho the Tesla infotainment offers everything CarPlay offers and I don't miss it.

CarPlay is amazing when you come from a POS drive like a ford, or some obscure brand or an S#!thole car from the age of the dinosaurs, but modern advanced vehicles like Rivian, Polestar or Tesla don't need CarPlay at all.
I drove Tesla, out side of musk fan boys. It wasn’t anything special. Only Tesla I may consider is a cyber truck with 450 mile range. Just not worth for plastic that falls apart, and batteries that won’t last long. Tesla in an accident often means total. Had few of those in friends and family. No way a Porsche, Mercedes,or Lexus were going to be totaled for same damage.

I will not consider a vehicle if it lacks CarPlay. I’m sure many agree.
Maybe if it has an excellent system like apparently Tesla, fine, but otherwise I think exactly like you.

No CarPlay, no buy.

They are going to monetize our use of the car anyway, why hold CarPlay hostage? They will force subscriptions and they will sell our driving and other data regardless of whether we have CarPlay or not.
Because its more $$ than if they allowed Carplay (which does not provide them access to our data). They want to control everything hence why they will hold CarPlay hostage.

Your Tesla does not offer everything CarPlay offers...definitely not lossless audio over wifi.
with 16 speakers I dont need lossless audio, it sounds pretty great... I promise you... Surround sound movies sound AMAZING on the car, which is more I can say for most vehicles. It meets my needs pretty well.

I'm not paying for infotainment map updates etc. period, ever. After you buy the car, the dealers/manufacturers don't care. At least offer CarPlay as an alternative.

I understand car manufactures as they simply can't hand over Apple all the entire control of the Multimedia system. I love Apple Car, but in a recent interview that The Verge had with Rivian, they explained how difficult is it for a user to get out of Carplay, and enter the native UI just to open the fronk. (As a simple example)
Users need consistency and this only happens if you give everything to Apple which companies can't do and they shouldn't in my opinion. Good modern cars have good infortainment systems. I have a Tesla Model 3 and a Dacia Jogger Hybrid. In My Tesla i really don't miss Carplay as Tesla infortainment is excellent IMHO. Especially when planning long trips, where it automatically plans for the Superchargers stops. On the other Hand my Dacia Jogger infortainement is crap, and luckly it is compatible with Wireless Carplay and I can't drive that car without Carplay which is good too.

It will be interesting to see how this evolves but just as a guess, every time less and less cars will use Carplay as their own system will improve so much that it would be pointless.

Pretty funny that Apple’s largest, publicly known at least, open standard is the thing that induces the most Apple-like behavior from other companies. Every geek friend I have, but also family member that’s aware of Apple products thinks CarPlay is a requirement for their next vehicle. Why are car companies so unwilling to just do what makes their product the most appealing? Tesla and Rivian software is good and all, but it’s not CarPlay good. Seems seriously arrogant of them
Elon may be arrogant about a lot of things, but I don’t think it is necessarily arrogance in this case. The Tesla screen is literally controlling and displaying everything in the car. It makes sense why they would want absolute control over it. They are also pushing out 2-3 software updates a week across their line of cars.

Apple CarPlay 2 was announced in June 2022. It is now projected to be released in 2024… maybe. That’s just not reasonable for a car manufacturer like Tesla’s needs where the computer system is literally capable of driving the car.

Of course they could stop trying to kill you and put some functions on physical buttons.

Now back to CarPlay, it's easy to contribute to customer satisfaction when you have a somewhat working solution, considering what's being delivered by auto manufacturers...

Why should a front trunk opening be limited to software? I get the desire to have less buttons on things but at the same time a hardware mechanism operation being limited to software to get to is a bit asinine

A new survey released last week by J.D. Power shows that U.S. consumers continue to prefer vehicles with support for Apple CarPlay.

Apple-CarPlay-Dash.jpg

The market research firm's annual U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study found overall satisfaction with in-vehicle infotainment systems to average 805 on a 1,000-point scale. However, satisfaction was higher among owners who use Android Auto (832), and even higher for those who use CarPlay (840).

The study is based on responses from 99,144 owners of new 2024 model-year vehicles in the U.S. who were surveyed after 90 days of ownership, according to J.D. Power. The study was conducted from July 2023 through May 2024.

CarPlay has routinely fared well in vehicle satisfaction studies since launching in 2014, so this latest one is no surprise. However, it comes after General Motors last year controversially decided to stop offering CarPlay and Android Auto in its new electric vehicles, in favor of its own software system. Electric vehicle maker Rivian also prefers its own software over CarPlay. J.D. Power's study reinforces that these automakers are betting against a consumer preference, and it remains to be seen if they will ever reverse course.

The next-generation version of CarPlay that Apple announced in 2022 has yet to become available in any vehicles, but Apple's website says the rollout will begin this year. Next-generation CarPlay will be more deeply integrated across multiple screens in a vehicle, offer a built-in FM radio app and climate controls, and more. It will also be highly customizable, allowing automakers to tailor the design of the system to uniquely match their vehicles.

Yes I love Apple CarPlay I think it's the most usable interface in any car I've ever had. Is a matter of fact there are some cars that I would certainly love to have but they don't support CarPlay and I will not buy a vehicle that does not support CarPlay.

The terrible support of my Lincoln system will make me never buy a car without CarPlay again, not only did they drop the remote diagnose (a feature past cars had built in and didn’t require it to be remote) but their software update system is terrible, when downloading the update to my computer the download failed and the website only allows one download per car, when I contacted the dealer they shrugged their arms at me, they couldn’t be bothered

This is antiquated thinking at this point. This was true back when CarPlay was still new and the alternative was abysmal infotainment systems from manufacturers. And while many of them are still abysmal, there are some that have done a great job of meeting or exceeding what CarPlay brings to the car.
Just on my morning commute, here is what I used CarPlay for:
• Hey Siri, show me how to get to work
• Hey Siri, shuffle my Rated 4 playlist
• Hey Siri, is the garage door closed?
• Hey Siri, add this song to my Rated 2 playlist
• Hey Siri, report a speed trap
• Hey Siri, read my recent text messages
• Hey Siri, when is my next meeting
• Hey Siri, share my ETA with Will
• Hey Siri, report a road hazzard
• Hey Siri, play the Space Music podcast

In short, it's the integration of iPhone, Siri, Music, HomeKit, Calendar, Maps, Podcasts, and Messages that makes CarPlay so amazing. My family has owned cars from Tesla, Honda, Audi, BMW, Infiniti, and Mazda. None of their built-in systems are as good as CarPlay.

Yep when they are this badly designed (and still have issues this isn’t a past issue many car makers still build their systems this crappy) why do I want to trust their infotainment systems?

Answer I don’t. I want what works and is seamless. A small extension of my phone is all I need. That’s what CarPlay provides.

I will never get another Tesla. Miserable experience by itself, and even worse without CarPlay. Even though my Tesla is only three years old I've started looking at other cars (usually my cars last me 15 years or more). CarPlay is now a requirement for me.
A non-hybrid EV isn't ever going to last 15 years. It doesn't surprise me you're looking for something else this soon.
