How does other people downgrading their devices affect your life?

Citizens should run the latest iOS on their devices at all times.

The only exception is in cases where there are serious bugs or performance problems, in which case Apple shouldn't have released that version for that device anyway.

Deliberately running an old iOS version on your device makes no sense. It is a deviant behavior and likely to arouse suspicion of your other "activities" amongst your peers and the authorities.

i must say my head is spinning a bit from what seems like contradictions.

i have an original iphone running 3.1.2. i cant imagine the red flags that must be raising.

however when you buy such expensive devices you should get much better support and security updates. if these companies want to be in the disposable business then they can do styrofoam

What? !!!

Are you Janet "Big Sis" Napalitano? See something, say something.

The Apple Defense Force is in full gear.

Weak. I was hoping Apple would begin to support their older OSs for once. Too bad iPhone 4 users, prepare for working features to be slowly dropped until you can only call, text and browse.

I didn't realise that not giving iPhone 4 users the same new features as newer iPhones was the same as taking away features. The fact remains that iPhone 4's will still be able to do everything that they currently do; they won't be relegated to only "call[ing], text[ing], and brows[ing]."

Incorrect

Apple made a serious error allowing earlier devices to 'upgrade' to IOS 8.

iPad2 for example. It is simply not powerful enough to run IOS 8 , you are left with a paperweight and a forced upgrade to a new multi 100$ device.

Before the fanboy' bleating starts......if you added a new fuel to your car on the promise that it was ok to put it in the tank for your model, then the vehicle runs at half the power and subsequently you are told you can never go back to having it work as it did 10 minutes ago..... Yeah law suit.

Apple needs to honour the $100's of dollars you have spent on your device and enable you to return it to a useful one.

You can't really make a blanket statement like that. I have an iPad2 that I have always upgraded to the latest os as soon as they come out. It works just fine on 8.0.2. Using it right now actually.

Im having to use my iPod Touch running iOS 6 because i cannot downgrade my iPhone 5 or iPad Air to iOS 7, and Airplay is simply broken in iOS 8. Tap the airplay symbol on a Video and it takes up to a minute for it to finally display on the Apple TV, and then random disconnects. Im sure it will be fixed, but i think there should be a bigger window for downgrading incase 1 feature you specifically need is now broken.

I'm still on iOS 5. I refuse to update to iOS 6 until every single bug is fixed.

I also refuse to get married until I meet a perfect human being.

now he didnt really say that did he? but this is the type of hyperbole retorts that we see a lot of on here.

i believe they added it back in itunes but for a time they removed itunes local syncing for contacts so older ones that could not synch via the cloud had no means of syncing their contacts with a computer.

i would call speed a feature so when you have all these reports of iphone4 not handling ios7 very well so there you have to choose between either.

Can't tell if trolling, conspiring, or joking.

Honestly, I really am lost on this one.

Citizens...yes...must be from some long lost chapter of 1984.

I quoted him. That's what he said. I didn't use hyperbole; he made an inaccurate statement. If you choose to upgrade your device then you are making a decision that you want to add whatever new features accompany that upgrade. There may be some performance issue, but that has nothing to do with Apple "dropping features." Again I repeat what I actually said and that you didn't address or refute:

The fact remains that iPhone 4's will still be able to do everything that they currently do; they won't be relegated to only "call[ing], text[ing], and brows[ing]."

You've never been behind on iOS versions have you? Features are dropped/stop functioning over time. Good luck on using the App Store on iOS 5 and below. Good luck using FaceTime on iOS 6 and below. With everybody updating as soon as they can, Apple can get away with ditching services on their legacy OSs.

i specifically bolded the part where you said not giving old phones the new features. i didnt see him say anything like that.

speed and fluidity is a feature and i would argue so is free space on the device (its one or the other for people) but you choose to ignore real life examples (like the ones i gave). good for you

Hang onto iOS 5, it may fetch 'antique' prices in a decade or so...... Seriously!!!

They seem to be getting away, but it doesn't mean that they should be when it at least comes to supporting features that were there before and should still be functional.

Well that's bold of them

I played with iOS8 on my iPad 2 and it was simply unusable. Hell, 7 was already a stretch for it. Put 7.1.2 back on and tossed it on eBay. Not my problem anymore.

And people wonder why Apple users are viewed with a jaundiced eye...

Who cares? Really.

Well the features on old o/s' mostly work. That is something to be thankful about.

I'm still waiting to view more reviews of iOS 8 running on the iPhone 4S before updating, but quite a few point to the fact that it's performance isn't that good. In your perspective, does that fall into your "exception rule"?

----------

This will ensure that app developers aren't even tempted to keep developing for iOS 7. Time to move forward.

If OS X developers can keep their apps running for 10.7 and 10.8 even though we are on 10.9, then iOS developers can keep their apps running for iOS 7 and iOS 8 (one iteration, instead of two like on OS X).
