As a White Cis-gendered male, am I allowed to purchase this band as reparations or is it appropriating a culture that I cannot identify with?
See, there’s the thing. I love the band. And if this were back in the 80s and 90s, I’d buy it Day 1. But today, if I were to wear it, I’d constantly worry about getting called out for cultural appropriation.

It’s sad. Back in the day, Unity was Unity. Now, not so much.

I don't think that would happen if you rocked the band. Maybe you are assuming the worst?

Well, that's a fear that you've pretty much developed inside your own head. (Not meant as an insult!)

Why don't you go with showing unity, and then put it aside if a non-white explains to you how you had the spirit right; but accidentally displayed it wrong?

It's never a good sign by default being on the alt-nut side just because you're worried about showing your spirit wrong. Just ask around; see what the people you are afraid of upsetting actually think.

Well said! I imagine if he did wear the band, he would be shown a lot of positivity.

You don’t live in the US, do you? Not meant as an aggressive question, but just saying that in the US, it has become so dang toxic.

Growing up in the 70s, 80s and 90s, I was part of the “culture”, when culture actually meant ‘culture’. And it felt we were all moving forward TOGETHER. But then it changed. And it feels like the division is only getting worse due to political climate and social media. And to me, that’s very sad. Truly. It doesn’t feel like we are all in it together anymore.

A simplified analogy: We were breaking up the clicks in high school. The geeks, jocks, mods, metal-heads, rebels and the rest were starting to hang together. Everyone was starting to get along - together. Now, they are all breaking apart again. Things are being segregated again.

Having pride in one’s self and heritage is a great thing. I’m proud to be an American with Italian and Native American heritage. Please notice that I put “American” first. I’m proud of all, but it’s important for ME to put American first. I guess “human” would be even better, but it would just sound weird 😂

Didn’t they have some Chinese New Year stuff? Aren’t all Asians Chinese? Or is Apple selective and lazy?

i like the watch band. But Apple bands are crazy expensive and been using lighter, more comfortable 3rd party bands for a while.
Ask some Vietnamese or Khmer immigrants that settled in US whether they’re Chinese and you’ll see some Chinese New Year crackers going up in your eyes

Yep, I wear my pride band every day and it starts conversations with people I meet who are in the LGBTQ+ community all the time. I’ve had nothing but positive conversations about it. I am conscious of the fact that the things I do may be seen as offensive and/or appropriation but I’m willing to change my behavior if I learn that’s the case. It’s something about loving my neighbor and all that.

You seriously need to get over that. Do you honestly think people are bold enough to come up to you and hurl an insult about what you're wearing? If anyone were to do that they've got real personal problems and are willing to take a risk at getting smacked in the head.
It's just a wrist band. You'd have to be pretty close up to someone to even pay attention to it. You're cheating yourself out on something you like because you're worried about something someone would say to your face about it? You're giving people way too much power in your life. SMH.

I will carefully skirt several subjects here by saying that we influence the world around us; if we stop showing unity because we see less unity, then others will see less unity, and show less unity. Before we know it we're sitting in the corners furthest away from each other; and we find us sharing that corner with the same nuts that talk about racial wars and being afraid of not being part of a racial majority.

You're right about me not living in the US; but let's just say that I've also seen aspects of what's going on there in person, while in the US.

Black Unity?

seems every time any unity of those of black heritage the question is arisen (lack of understanding, lack of support, and the questioning of why it’s needed)

I love the band. Looks great.

an Apple first and I love it, the fact Apple is doing something.

it's pretty cool. very tribe called quest looking.

definity feels like the triple brothers unity: ATCQ, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, Moni Love, etc.
not human unity though?

and here it is again: questioning the validity or purpose of black unity and not understanding the history of why this has come about. Just like “all lives matter” this is the same rebuke - Jim Crow in the house? Regardless if anyone has to mention human unity as a rebuttal has no understanding this is human unity in practice and that human unity doesn’t yet exist due to division and lack of supporting any form of unity. If we cannot unite ourselves then there is no power or drive to come to agreement of unifying with others - of what should be accepted or tolerated and what isn’t. If you annoy understand the source of the division then unity isn’t something you truly support. YOU isn’t a pronoun in my sentences here.

I appreciate and hear what you and svan are saying, but I see it happen a lot. It’s sad AND true.
I hear you. There is a lot of negativity in this world and most of it is generated for profit. There are folks that will pick a fight over anything, but I will never let someone intimidate me. Do what makes you feel comfortable and surround yourself with positive energy. Any human asking for equality shouldn't bring out hatred and fear. Likewise, supporting equality shouldn't bring out hatred and fear.

A lot of people don't feel this way, but I get what you're saying. I don't think a human unity of all races and peoples would hurt anything though.
you obviously cannot see that hasn’t ever happened and that rebuttal is the reason it never will because it marginalized a lack of importance for any people to be strong within themselves x it forms a basis for argument of lack of meaningfulness.

what youre stating is the actual state of affairs and has been for hundreds of years settled into a practice of separation.

As a Muslim, Atheist, Pansexual, Lizard Person, I am grateful to Apple for having segregated Apple Watches.
First Muslim and atheist are faiths - anyone from any heritage can choose to practice those faiths. I don’t see a white Caucasian being black skinned naturally from 1~100feet away. There is a major difference being ignorant to understanding the need for this maybe should proclude this isn’t a topic you really need to participate in constructively.

Very well said, and I appreciate the response.

I’ll make you and Black Magic a deal: PayPal me $49 and I’ll wear it. Hahaha. Jk.

Maybe I will buy one. Who knows. It could be an Internet 1st - “Online Conversation Changes Mind - news at 11”.

my man, my question was to the person asking for american unity, the 'black lives matter' never made me want to say 'all lives matter', they obviously do, but i get where the first is coming from. however if we're asking for american unity, why not raise to to global unity :)

you also can't really be muslim and atheist at the same time)))

Technically you can; just like you can (culturally)be a Christian, and an atheist.

I get what you mean, but they're just like "us"… Some of us/them/everyone habitually go to [religious thing] with about the same amount of faith as I have in humanity. 😆

As far as what a person might get hate for the actual faith matters less than the apparent group that you belong to. 😞

One nice thing about getting older is every younger generation assumes you’re irrelevant. You can wear what you like for whatever reason without spending all the mental energy on the cliche of the day in the news cycle. The band is kind of cool looking. I don’t care about what it represents or not. I won’t get it because all of Apple’s bands are just priced beyond my estimation of their value.

Your bias is showing. Stop trying to explain to me what my truth should be. The fact you feel the need to do this is proof of your privilage.

culturally, sure, i suppose, although you would most likely be some sort of arabic as opposed to muslim. i understand your point though)
