Honestly, I think Apple introducing the 8 and X phone is a big mistake. If the X is eating away the 8 sales, that's BAD. If Apple knew that was going to happen, then why the hell did they produce the 8? They're about to start production of iPhone X in October fitting into a very tight schedule to meet demand by November 3rd, despite claims that they've been working on the X for years in advance. Something's not right.
The potential flip side of the coin is if they only released the X at $1k, then many folks would complain there's not a cheaper option that is newer or better than the older models.

Apple today has celebrated the launch of the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and Apple Watch Series 3 by sharing a few images of customers around the world buying and trying out the devices for the first time.

Apple also launched the Apple TV 4K today, which introduces the ability to view 4K HDR content on Apple's set-top box.

I guess the ATV doesn't deserve to be celebrated?

If I were to be one of the early customers like this dude, I would just not Hi-five them and see the awkward reaction from them. It's the little things that make my day.

The lineup isn't the problem, it's the pricing iMHO..

they should have copied the model of pricing they did for the iPad. take the "old" design with the "average" components and create an entry level affordable product, and then made the "X" priced like the iPad PRO.

this way, those who just want an iPhone have an affordable option to get into the platform for a reasonable price, but, those who want the bleeding edge, can still get it.

but instead there's a $50 US price increase.

Should have been

iPhone SE: 399
iPhone 7(+): 469(499)
iPhone 8(+): 599(699)
Iphone X: 949

Extremely simple lineup. But keeping the 6s alongisde the 7 while introducing the 8 adds confusion because now you have 3 generations of iPhone for sale. what differentiates the 3 models? why get a 7 instead of a 6s? or an 8 instead? there's really no reason to have gone the way apple did, other than justification for a price increase.

at this point, the iPhone 8 is a mature product that is benefiting from years of basically the same manufacturing techniques and production economies of scale. Apple could easily have afforded, while still being insanely profitable to have kept prices the same, if not lower, and STILL be premium and competitive.

However, the X will drop in price in Fall 2018 when the next iteration is released ( such as 11 ). Each year the new X will cost $999 while the previous will drop. They're going to have to phase out the 6 and 7 soon, keeping the 8. The SE may end up having iP7 specs next Spring(?).

But the $999 price point is ridiculous. Really. Do people actually think that to have Face ID is worth $1,000? Thumb ID didn't cost Apple much to manufacture. I have an SE and it does all the things I need to do for $499 ( or less ). So really, what people are paying for the X are: 3D cameras, new screen, storage capacity ( this one makes a huge difference ), chip architecture, and material. It's possible the included earphones were part of the cost. iOS, Thumb ID, connector, etc, are trivial.

Now if iPhone X were to cost $700 ( or less ), then it would have been more sensible. People may not realize that having a $1,000 phone actually increases the phone bill when it comes to leasing with monthly payments.

My SE has 64 GB and yet, the iPhone X is $1,000 with starting 64 GB of storage. WTF is wrong with the picture?

You and I are clearly reading very different articles and/or you must be short the stock.

Even without the X, Apple’s sales have been accelerating the past few quarters. It’s a lot more reasonable to assume then that X will only fuel those flames.
I got out of the stock market completely, its become a joke, waiting for the tech bubble 2.0 to pop before I get back into it.

What's wrong is they got a Social Justice Warrior as their CEO. This is one of Steve Job's biggest mistake.

High fiving people over a phone. How dork-i-fied can you get?

What does being a "social justice warrior" have to do with price points of an expensive phone?

I want my iPhone X. The wait is unbearable!!
Heh, I couldn't wait..The 8 + is arriving today :)

It's like a Christmas or Birthday present you're giving to yourself.

You just got something new - that you're excited about. Why wouldn't people want to celebrate it?

Why wouldn't you want to celebrate other's happiness as well?
Bunch of grumps on here! Maybe the haters need more fiber ;)

Apple doesn’t do the S thing anymore though and I’m sure part of it is for marketing purposes. I mean if they still only changed the number when there was an all new external design like they used to right now the iPhone 8 would be the iPhone 6SSS. I’m thinking they skipped the number 9 because next year there will be one more vintage 6 phone. I mean they wouldn't want to call it an iPhone 6SSSS.

The stores will be pretty slow today compared to previous launches, but expect Apple to announce huge lines and the biggest iPhone launch ever!
Not sure why people get so hung up over the numbers.
Its a new iPhone buy or don't and move on.
I'm trading in my 6 for the 8+..looking forward to it arriving today..good fun!

Fair enough... I also pulled some $$ a few weeks ago, but from a valuation standpoint, it's actually not that bad and certainly not a bubble by tech bubble standards. Apple, FB, GOOGL... even with their recent runups are actually fairly valued here. Can't say the same for NFLX and AMZN, but those stocks were never going up based on valuations anyway.

I have to hand it to Angela Ahrendts. She commoditized the "launch day line" and invented the term "genius grove" to describe the simple act of removing a countertop, and then charged Apple Inc. $78 million. They paid it and are continuing to pay it.

Wow.

I don't think Apple anticipated this low of demand for the iPhone 8 lineup, however over 2018 it will even out. Those who upgrade every 2-3 years will probably get the 8 or 8 Plus because they either don't want to spend 1K on a phone, or they just don't really care about getting the latest and greatest.

It's folk like us, who spend time reading rumors and commenting on forums, who will initially buy the iPhone X. We are the early adopters and "guinea pigs" for Apple's new direction. I think Apple is realizing it might have underestimated the iPhone X demand, and will have a lot of annoyed customers when they won't get the new phone before the New Year. However, it will even out by Spring of 2018, and all will be fine. We will look back on how everyone was freaking out about Apple making this decision when it was a smart, calculated move.

Plus, it wouldn't surprise me if Apple positions itself in the next few years with marketing their phones at cheaper prices to a wider audience, to capture what Samsung has been doing for years. The high end phones, and then the year or two old phones retailing around the $400-$500 range.

In the pictures you obviously see more employees than customers.
Obviously? In the picture where the very first customers entering the store are walking down a row of blue-shirted Apple employees, yes, duh, you see more employees. In the other pictures there's more customers than employees. People are looking so hard for ways to paint this as a terrible no good horrible day. A new device is out, many people are happy to be getting it. Even if that's not you, maybe let the be happy?

I think a logical reason for keeping the 6S lineup may be the pushback over the lack of a headphone jack in any iPhone from the 7 onward.

my iphone 7 plus is still new and looks the same as iphone 8.

did you notice that all pictures apple posted are focused on one person? where is the line?
In Southern California, there was a news segment an the launch day and there was no one in line I believe they were at the Pasadena Apple Store.....

the last 2-3 years once the scalpers and early adopters got their phones, there was a lot of discounting of iphones. Not through apple, but other retailers. BOGO and other sales. Apple wants that money which is why the X is coming out right about when they start to discount the regular models. They will sell this as just an extra coffee or whatever a month.

Yeah, lets celebrate a 4 year old phone design. This is just sad. And the iPhone X isn't going to sell as well as the tech journalist think it is either. $1000 bucks for a phone with no touch-id and that ugly devil horns. 2017 isn't going to be a good year for Apple...

Yeah, we've heard this nonsense before and then there are record sales. Just keep telling yourself that and you may actually believe it, but when it doesn't happen that way... egg on the face comes off pretty easy. LOL

The design maybe 4 years old, but the tech inside is not and not everyone wants the iPhone X. What I don't get is why you naysayers are trying to bring those down that just purchased an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. We get it, you aren't happy about it and there is little doubt the iPhone X is going to be the one most will buy... come Nov when it's released there will be huge lines and massive online orders.

I expect Apple has a pretty good idea of how their phones will sell - the notion of "low demand" is based on reports of how many people are lining up at Apple stores, years after Apple started taking steps to make it easier to order online, skipping the morning-of lineup, so the ones lining up are mostly going to the store precisely for that morning-of excitement, and a large part of the usual crowd for that experience will be the ones most likely to want the X instead of the 8 because it's the most shiny.

And I don't think Apple has underestimated the iPhone X demand - it is simply a phone that they won't be able to make enough of to meet customer demand. I expect it'll still be hard to get a year from now, just like the AirPods - which now, a year after release, are still shipping with a 2-3 week delay. The iPhone X simply has parts (and possibly assembly steps) that Apple can't get/do in the same high volumes as they can their mainline phones (6/7/8). Quarterly sales numbers suggest Apple's primary phones get produced at rates north of 400,000 per day (if one assumes the production lines run 24/7/365) to meet their actual sales volume, while best estimates are that they can only produce 10,000 of the iPhone X per day. That's not because they forgot to devote more production line space to it, that's because some of the parts they simply can't get in quantities approaching half a million every single day.

Apple is taking a very calculated risk in producing a Ferrari-level phone to sell alongside their Toyota-level phone, and I'm sure they've thought it through, including taking a small but visible hit to day-of-release excitement surrounding the 8 (which will still sell in huge volumes - go look at how many people said Apple was doomed last year with the release of the 7, which sold very well), and including the inevitable backlash from a bunch of "people like us" who will become enraged when they order the X in the first 10 minutes and get ship dates next Spring (the ones who get ship dates in December/January will consider themselves lucky comparison to the ones in March).
