Tim Cook's creative engine = lets make the same exact thing we already make, just change the size of the screen.

I applied for a job at Apple and my PhD is in new products development. I could fulfill all of your wildest product demands it given even a minor decision making role. My application was never even officially acknowledged. :/ The company is largely run by accountants and yes-men/buddies of the executive cadre. Innovation, quality and long-term competitiveness have been downgraded to secondary objectives to increased margins.

The problem is none of those products that you listed are all that creative. They're just iterations or facsimiles of tech that has already existed prior, except for the iPhone, but they released that back in 2007.

They all are. The problem is you guys want things that can't exist yet.

Yet Apple is more profitable than ever. Yawn...

Apple's creative engine so far:

- Upgrading the Mac mini to a new version and downgrading its performance at the same time.
- A whole new generation of iPad mini with the same internals as the old one except the Touch ID button a place a $100 premium on it.

well do like SJ 1.1 and start your own company and quit bitching

Apple under Tim is creating too many versions of their products

- It increases the work load for engineers, developers, designers etc. It's better to focus the effort and do one thing really well.

- It confuses the average consumer. Should I get an iPad Air, New iPad, iPad mini, or 2 or 3. Retina? Whats's the difference, I just want that thing my colleague showed me yesterday

- By making one size/design widespread you are more likely to set the standard for how a product in segment should look like, and what everybody wants to have. When a new version is released, it's becomes more of special moment.

If Apple confuses people with their pittance of products, what about companies like Samsung and Sony etc.
Even with the very small amount of products Apple has, they can't get it right.

Well they said there was a 5 year pipeline (which we are over half way through) in place when Steve Jobs passed away. This means stuff out now, and items recently released were likely in his sights when he passed away.

We may not know if Tim is telling the truth for a few years now. I hope all turns out to be awesome. I won't judge the fate based on the current 'Mini' products, as apple had many Road Apples both before, and after Steve's return too.

My observation is that Jobs' legacy only lasted for about 2 years. I truly believe he would not have approved iOS 7 designs (I don't mean it's bad!), iPhone 6 Plus, Yosemite redesign, etc.

No, we want things that DON'T exist yet, not that can't exist yet.

Remember that Steve Jobs' mantra was to create things that people didn't know they wanted until he showed it to them. That's how he created truly innovative products and had people eating out of the palm of his hand.

Unfortunately, that mantra seems to have died with Steve. Now Apple has become a cookie-cutter version of its former self and just keeps cranking out iterations.

Not when in comes to the whole mac line.

And the ipad air. A bit thinner, a bit newer CPU. Revolutionarily awsome  They must have spent all their R&D budget on the iPad mini 3

And that apple pay is going to change the world, right. But why would any business outside the US bother offering it when iPhone doesn't have much market share and NFC and other smart payment systems have been around for years.

Apple needs to open up the NFC. There are already a lot of extremely popular NFC solutions in other parts of the world esp. in Asia. In Hong Kong, the penetration of the Octopus card is >100% (20M cards issued for a city with a population of 7M i.e. more than one for every individual in average), and the card can be used to pay for a lot of stuff under ~USD130 (limit for each transaction), and can be connected to a credit card account for automatic recharge of the card value.

You must have missed all those "magical" product events presented by Jobs or conference call where he made an appearance. Apple we know today exists because Jobs was a master at horn tooting. Let's not create myths about "the old days."

Except it all seems to be empty promises now. Every time there is an interview with Cook he keeps talking about all of this amazing stuff. Who is he trying to convince, the public or himself?

I don't recall Jobs trying to convince us that something great was coming whenever he spoke. Sure he used magical and all the charm of a snake oil salesman in his presentations, but that was his thing, it was who he was. With Jobs, people expected the goodies to come. With Cook, their is doubt, IMO.

Apple better hope people really like to dick around with their wrists as much as they think or they're really going to look silly

Never mind. :D:D

Explain to me what Steve jobs invented between 2002 and 2006?

Well Tim, it's hard to agree.

- A reversed engineered Mac Mini
- A 5k resolution computer, which can't use the screen for the superior Mac Pro. Hence you have to decide between screen res or CPU/GPU perfomance.
- Taking 100 USD for a finger-ID for the iPad Mini 3
- A phone that bends, and a samsung replicate
- A watch that requires charging more often than any other device you have

If this is a "Creative Engine", the future looks pitch black.

Where is Steve, when you need him?!

I agree with everything except the phone part.

I think at some point, products like Mac Book Air, will be perfect. It's kinda hard to improve on these great products. The thing is, Apple does some amazing engineering, like the time controller (or what ever it's called) in the new 5k iMac. The lightweight and incredible battery life in the Mac Book Air. Just look at how many Windows hardware manufacturers, started producing Air like laptops once Apple first released them. Why do folks, think that these things magically appear? I can't even phantom, how many hours of R&D are put into these products. Sure, year to year, there are just some minor changes or updates, but these things are nearly perfect! :apple:

I'd sacrifice some battery life in exchange for a retina display.

I'm sorry, I must have misread the quote. I didn't realize he said his "profit engine" has never been stronger. Thanks for redirecting me back to, you know, the actual subject of this thread.

Well, I'll give you that Cook sounds awkward when he says stuff and he doesn't filter himself enough, creating unreasonable expectations. But I blame Apple PR for not reining him in more.

I think this year's product line is pretty solid and think Cook did make good on his promise made earlier this year. The new iPhones are great -- never thought I'd enjoy a 4.7" screen as much as I have been. The 5K iMac makes me want one... as soon as a 21" is available. And I'm very much anticipating the Apple Watch. I can't wait to own a car with Car Play, though probably will be a while with the slow implementation. And Apple Pay may unburden my back pocket, hopefully sooner rather than later. Then there is Healthkit, HomeKit, WatchKit; all things to keep Apple iDevices relevant and hardware sales growing.

Up until now I haven't been a huge Cook fan. Still not totally sold, but I have to give credit were credit is due. Apple's guidance for Q1 is a monster and Apple typically is conservative with that. We'll see what he does in 2015 product-wise, but I think, based on what he's done in 2014, he deserves time to match product with his words. He hasn't been CEO that long and products don't appear over night.

Oh shut up, Cook.
You came out with lame Mac Mini's and an OS that looks like it was designed by a 3rd grader.
Stop yacking and start producing on a functional level

So many commenters bashing Tim Cook for saying this. He's the CEO! what do you expect him to say??? "Hey everyone... we're really out of ideas. We're just milking you into buying more of the same." Keep dreamin'.

And what do you expect everyone else to say? "OK Tim, we believe every single thing you say in public, without any independent thought, despite evidence to the contrary, just because because a fanboy ordered us to."

The untapped potential of the little Apple TV is immense... The commercial and creative power of the internet on the livingroom big screen.

Nobody cares about internet tv. Now one wants to surf the web from the sofa. People have been pushing this concept for 20 years. The truth is apple really has nothing more to offer than fossilized cable companies. Its all a sort of myth--like wearable tech.

Obviously--but who is the puff commentary fooling? The coming wearable debacle will spotlight how delusional Cook, Ives, et al are. Once apple loses brand momentum--an inflection point shark jump is a grim possibility. This forum represents apple followers with a high level of brand investment--the level of disgust here is a bad sign

I agree this iteration of the watch will flop, but net tv is the obvious future. There is no doubt about that whatsoever.
