Headphone jack could also amount to the problem of not upgrading. But perhaps no one really wants the features of a better phone...

Why have it there if you never gonna use it? The lack of upgrades means people are just doing tehir homework better before then plow in

To me it is not the biggest factor. I just don't like too freaking large phones. That's why I use an iPhone SE. I was hoping for a new iPhone SE with face ID and other new features. But they want an iPad in my pocket. No way dude.

I too have an SE and will not part with it. Apple does not produce the phone I am willing to buy any more.
I also use the headphone jack everyday and don't want to loose Touch ID

Because I am in wifi range 95% of the time I am wondering if I swap to an iPod touch

Cook in a separate statement said all of Apple's devices are designed to last. "We do design our products to last as long as possible," he said.

Now this is comical.... According to The Register, Apple is on record in court arguing that “consumers can't reasonably expect their iPhone batteries to last longer than a year, given that its battery warranty runs out after 12 months.”

So Tim Cook’s idea of longevity is the extent of the original warranty, i.e. one year! Wow, just wow!

It's not just the price of the phones that is outrageous it is the accessories of everything Apple as well.
As a laugher, I can’t wait to see how Rene Richie, Jim Dalrymple, John Gruber and Dan Dilger try to put lipstick on this pig
Well it's a 20 billion USD in profits pig.

I do hate Jim Dalrymple though. He is one of the most condescending people in tech journalism I know. Before you make fun of others, look at yourself.

I’m still using my iPhone 6 64GB, it is quite good, I have a very slim case and a screen protector, works fine with iOS 12, battery is new, camera could be better, but difference between new and old ones still being subtle compared to my Sony a6000.

User experience stay closer to new ones, so, upgrading doesnt needed. When I want to feel it new I change the 2dollar case and new screen protector.

It feels so new and great... it is slimmer and lighter than any other iPhone after it! Very happy

And I cant unlock it with my thumb! Love!

And I can use my collection of hi fi headphones without adapter, so O have some in the work place, some in the livingroom, a just in case ones in my backpack, my wired speakers in the room, very very very happy

Probably my next iPhone would be an iPhone 6s!

Phones are more expensive yet overall gross margins are roughly the same (38%) even though higher margin services make up a greater percentage of revenues. If Apple was just raising the price of iPhones just for the sake of it wouldn’t gross margins be increasing?
Not really. You're missing the most important variable: product mix. iPhones still generate the majority of the revenue so their sales mix is going to have an outsized impact on the margins. Any number of sensible permutations of sku sales could generate flat gross margins. The price increases on Apple's flagships could have been just the variable that kept the overall margin from dropping below 38%. Or they could have been the reason less profitable models sold more and drove the margin down to 38% when it could have been higher if they sold more flagships. Without sku numbers detailing the product mix, there's no math that can support any interpretation of Apple's gross margin relative to iPhone pricing.

Also remember Apple adopted a new revenue reporting standards.

So what's going to happen now is the 2019 lineup will be intentionally crippled and have lower cost components to get the handset price down 20% so they can drop prices by 5% and then still claim a 15% growth. It's becoming so bloody transparent. They sure as hell better hope Android never fixes its fragmented ecosystem because the day they do, iOS is toast.

I'll replace my 7+ with the 2019 model. If its around half the cost of the 2018 models where it belongs.

Well, I live in the US, and price is literally the only reason I didn't buy a new iPhone this year... and I don't think I'm the only one. To claim that this highway-robbery pricing is only an issue in "emerging countries" is ridiculous. Of course it's one of the main factors for the US as well!

Thanks for the cheap battery upgrade, I didn’t choose to buy a new iPhone this year. Any upgrade can now wait a few years, at which time hopefully iPhones won’t be poor value for money.

Yes price is a big factor in the equation. The iPhone Xs I bought was still $500 with carrier subsidy (Canada). The phone is around $1,300 off contract.

Apple is making big profits from iPhone. They could substantially lower the price and still make good profit. Sell more iPhones and get more from "services revenue".

Apple had trade up options this year too starting around November time. Having promotions on a phone that was released months prior is indicative of disappointing sales, otherwise there would be no need.

I can’t recall Apple having such promotions before.

That may very well be, but I bet you they sold less devices. Because of the crazy high prices. This cannot be sustained year over year.
