Facebook's version of the Metaverse seems to be just like the online game SecondLife from 20 years ago. Which is still cool, SecondLife was cool, but I don't think the average person wants to play it or live it every day. Tim Cook's comments on AR being life changing vs straight up VR will hook more people I think. How cool would it be to just look at a product on a store shelf and "see" floating next to it where else you can buy it cheaper. Or look at your TV and if you say "where are the HDMI ports" and the TV turns transparent showing you where all the ports are.

I just hope the Apple goggles also offer a VR mode where you can blank out the real world if you choose, so game developers can easily port all their VR games to Apple.

I recommend looking at the twitter account @PessimistsArc.

It has countless newspaper examples of middle aged or elderly folk rallying against technologies going back almost 200 years. This is a never-ending cycle of luddism and countless examples where every technology we hold dear today was rallied against.
I’m almost 40. I love technology so much since I was a child and this will not change. :)

Some older folks dismiss new technologies because they feel insecure inside. They don’t want to become irrelevant but they at the same time no longer have the time and energy to learn new stuff. (Although the above is true I’m not referring it to Zuckerberg’s new trick. So I’m crossing out the above.)

Losers, or the billions of people who have a harsh life in the real world, many of which are still in first world countries.

Whether you agree with the ethics or not, you can't argue that there isn't a huge market for escapism.

Those indeed poor people can hardly afford fresh water, what makes you think they will be the target audience for VR tech any time soon

If you want to endear users to your virtual world, especially if you are a company as hated as Facebook, you really don't want their first impression of it to be creepy heads on floating torsos in a mid-2000s looking 3D world.

The problem with Metaverse (and all alternate realities) is that a large majority of people frequenting it will be weirdos. I just can't a sane person coming home from work logging into meta verse for a while. I mean, I would try it, but it would probably get old real quick. And then they want you to spend actual money in there or look at ads? GTFO.

Well, I guess I'm one of those "older folks" you mention as I'm quite a bit older than you! I absolutely encourage and follow and accept all manner of technology, not just in computing, but medical, aerospace, energy and others.
Speaking personally, I'm quite secure "inside", whatever that means, thanks very much, and continually embrace and learn new things, same as I always have - and I'm not alone. Also not "irrelevant", thanks very much!
The problem with this aspect of technology is not that it's difficult, or scary, or hard to do, but that it's more of a solution looking for a problem. It's been around for years - probably a lot longer than you think - e.g. the US Navy has been using it to design submarines for ages.
The only reason it's becoming mainstream and getting pushed so much is because companies have figured out how to make money with it, by either selling you new products and services you didn't know you wanted, or by getting into your life and harvesting and selling data generated by you. Sure, you'll get something very shiny and fun, and it'll be widely adopted, but only so long as it makes business sense for someone.
This isn't Luddism - AR/VR has it's place in certain niches - but the push to make it more mainstream, and abominations such as the "Metaverse" should at least make you suspicious.

It's just eWorld with better graphics 🤣

Eh...I'm in my 50's and I have always been interested in where technology will lead us (hopefully more good than bad). And I will definitely give VR a try -- though I don't really want to inhabit Zuckerworld.

I think some truly amazing stuff could happen with VR in the next several years. Just hope I don't croak before it happens. ;)

Cook is so full of crap.
So Zuck has made up a word, (like Apple do constantly). All he needs to do is explain what it is. If enough people use and accept it, then dictionaries will create an entry for it.

For any body that hade never heard of the terms, I'll bet more of them would be closer to suggesting what a 'Metaverse' is than they would defining a 'Dynamic Island', or myriad of the other silly names that Apple invents for their software/hardware.

Guess I'm old (46). I don't want anything to do with this ar/metaverse nonsense at all. I don't want a headset. I don't want glasses. I don't want implants. And I'm super tired of being presented with for-profit visions of the future.
That doesn’t come from being old. I’m older than you, and would welcome AR technology once it gets really good (and not anything that Facebook has had its hands in). Smart contacts and an earpiece that gives me an interface like Jarvis, at my beck and call? Sign me up. A Facebook™️ headset for consuming social media? Yeah, no thanks.

This is why I keep saying VR > AR. There's just way more fun stuff in VR. Stuff like fighting through the trenches of WWII committing espionage for the Allies, or face to face with Darth Vader as he assesses whether or not I'm fit to live or not, …
You’re looking at it entirely from a gaming perspective. For gaming, with total immersion, sure, VR is great. For so many other things, AR is a lot better, because you can overlay information on top of the real world.

Haven't humans been creating Artificial Realities for millenniums? I would apply religion, politics, philosophies, and even unique cultural manifestations into the category of "Metaverse". It's a method of control over a populace.

Same thing can be said about crypto…”not sure the avg person can tell you what it is”

Sucky was “lucky” with FB..let’s not go into discussion if he stole or borrowed or if it was all his idea. But he liked b00bs, we know that and he was socially awkward (who isn’t) and there was this idea for schools+b00bs. It then blew up and gave that guy too much power, too much money. And now that he’s trying to create something HUGE and it IS going to fail.

Because…

Ready Player One and Enders Game etc. are sci-fi stories that’s gone mainstream. Combined with the fact that gaming has had a huge user base increase the last 10-15 years. But most people don’t game or watch sci-fi. It’s still nerdy. Just more nerds than before.

But the majority of us WON’T be in the meatverse because we have no interest. And those that do sure don’t want as much ads there as they get served on FB. And before it’s so good that EVERYONE is amazed, Meta will have run out of money and most people still won’t want to spend any time there. Too expensive, where will he make his money if his plan of becoming the internet and Amazon combined which you can’t avoid?

The tech is promising, it will have uses and it is cool, tech wise. But this won’t be cool for most people, sorry.

You're right Timmy, nobody wants that "Meta" BS, but guess what! Most average people also don't want your AR/VR drug you're trying so hard to shove into our throats. We are already addicted to your iToys and they distract us enough in our every day lives even causing accidents in some cases and deaths, so please don't make matters worse with selling us even more addictive technology and distraction.

"As he often does, Cook also spoke on the importance of programming as a universal language, and he touched on topics like climate change, recycling, and politics."

LMAO!!!! Of course, he has to show he is a "good person" and give woke speeches even though he has enough money in the bank to live like a god. What a hypocrite...
