Mac Mini is important? 3 years of no updating it?

I will believe this when I see it.

While I too hope this is good news, the sarcastic / snarkey side of me wants to make the comment “well.. TC said it was important but DIDN’T actually say it was going to get an update. </snarky>

That said, I’m really confused. The Mini is probably the most ‘pc like’ of the macs. New processor, more/faster memory, better graphics and an SSD is all that is needed. (Yeah... I know it’s not quite that simple) Instead of trying to wow-factor ever little detail Apple should be focusing on providing updates on a regular schedule so that systems keep up with current technology. Surely with the almost $1 Trillion dollar valuation they could afford a small team to update this more often. :)

Are we sure Tim Cook wasn't thinking of the iPad Mini?

Seriously. What else was this grey/beige corporate drone going to say?

Apple tells half truths as it suits their PR.

Not holding my breath here.
He could have just not responded to the email like most do. IDK how much longer before there's a new mini, but I believe that it's not getting axed. He wouldn't have responded if there weren't plans to update it.

Apple's Mac mini celebrated its third birthday this week, marking three years since the device was last updated. The lack of attention Apple has given to the Mac mini has left many Mac users wondering about the future of the machine and whether there are updates to come.
It's kind of like you work the counter at McDonalds. Your girlfriend dumped you and married a doctor and now has two children. And you keep thinking she's coming back.

I have no use for a mac or macOS any longer, but I am happy to see the mini still alive. I am curious to where they go with it though. Maybe this is the first ARM based mac? I would think the MacBook would be first, but they could create an Apple TV sized mac mini with an ARM processor likely. Should be interesting.

Bring back the Cube. Make it that smoke black like the nMP. Two half card slot. RAM slots. Several M.2m PCIe slots and the rest can be a giant heat sink and 200mm fan. Just cause you would never release a new cMP in space gray as you should. That would be what the customer wants.

As I said in a post the other day and many times in the past.

I hope this is the evidence needed for the countless people that are insistent on the idea that Apple have axed it.

Anyway, the shock here is the fact that Tim Cook said it to a customer, which is unexpected.

2018 will be an exciting year for Macs.

I swear you all are quite easy to make happy. The Mac Mini is not a complex product. Any normal computer company would have refreshed it 2-3 times since it was last updated. Tim makes a "just trust us" comment and everyone is ready to go "see, they do care". Tim actually talked to a customer... wow... really??? So if they update it, how long will it be before its updated again... 5 years???

Given Apple's current direction, I wouldn't' be shocked if they produces a Mac Mini that only ran iOS.

Here, here. But I'ld rather have the iMac Pro without the screen. And got the love of God please make the RAM slotted instead soldered.
I hope they don't use soldered storage that you can't upgrade. Some have MMC that is as slow as a spinner.
If the mini turns into a ComputeStick it's hosed.

What he means is the 2014 Mac Mini will continue to be the low-end option in the Mac lineup for many years to come. They are planning to offer an even lower cost model that has a 4200RPM hard drive. it'll be offered in 3 different colors.

(I actually bought the very first Mac Mini Apple released back in 2005, and it had a 4200RPM hard drive, and it was very slow; I eventually booted off an external Firewire 400 drive for significant speed boost)

Much as I would like to be enthusiastic; as soon as I read the "...we love it too..." I knew he was lying.
Best case is probably that they'll celebrate the anniversary by producing a limited edition of gold or black ones.

As long as they don't cut off the keyboard & screen of a retina MacBook and call it the new Mac Mini.

I'd be interested (in probably a disgusted way) in seeing what an A11-based Mac Mini would be like.

I'd bet my (non existent) farm on everything being soldered and bolted down tight.
That way they can make it the size of a matchbox with the slowest and oldest tech, just to say… ooh! Look! World's smallest!
The Apple way…

I thought so too.

Hopefully it will be as small or smaller than an intel NUC computer, in which case it should be re-dubbed the "Mac nano" like the old iPod nanos.

Look Tim, no need to reinvent the wheel here.

Don't go all minimalist on us and give us a port-less thinner box.

Just update the ports, give us quad-core processor option, a decent GPU, and user-accessible RAM.

My guess:

Mac mini with Intel I3-8100 (quad core) processor and Intel UHD 630 graphics.

Base model will have 4GB RAM (configurable to 8GB or 16GB).

Oh, and a 5,400 rpm HDD [configurable to Fusion Drive or flash storage (SSD)].
