"I think the power is now shifted to the user and that has been What Apple has always been about - giving the power from the institution to the user"

Utter nonsense.... It's never been about the user if you must tech them via an app. Restrictions how much time to spend in an app is all helpful, but ultimately it should be up to users themselves. It always has been. but the fati ts gotten so bad, we now we help..

Cook said customers can trust Apple to be "on their side."

ok... hat means we are letting Apple control us.. How is that freedom ?

Privacy (4th amendment) is a god given right and just as important as freedom of speech (1st) and the right to bear arms (2nd).

I always appreciated how much Apple defended privacy. How private our data really is with them, we'll never know. Have they had any major leaks like FB and many other tech companies? I really like this new untraceable signatures they announced today.

If Apple is so keen on privacy. Can someone explain why Apple made thus deal with Facebook? Hmm?

Why not let us use w/e hardware we want with OSX ? Apple is so full of it. Sick of it. Just stop making computers, oh wait you have.
Oh god please no, we dom’t want Another Windows. macOS is fat and stable thanks to the software and hardware is made by the same company

I think the fact Cook has used the Apple name and brand to celebrate homosexuality since he became CEO is about as political as you can get! He’s such an utter two faced hypocrite on this topic. Perhaps he should also stop funding political campaigns too.

Yes I also read that yesterday, however as it’s not been reported at all on this website, not surprising as it’s too negative, then it has also been debunked by Cook in the same interview:

http://9to5mac.com/2018/06/04/tim-cook-refutes-data-sharing-with-facebook/

Take it as you will, just remember they also never told millions of people they deliberately throttled their iPhones performance, and apparently Cooks Apple isn’t political either...

Tim Cook (if that's how you spell it) is obviously a lowlife snake in the grass. Says one thing, does another. Don't trust a single word he says.

Um, no it’s not. You maybe want them to block google and google apps?
Don't accept money from them and make DuckDuckGo the default search engine if they care so much for customer privacy. Switch back to Bing for Siri. Of course don't remove the option to set these to Google.

He is a classic hypocrite.

The evidence shows that he is clearly not.

Samuel1: I'm glad I'm not living in your world of evidence. Must be awful there.

By the way: I am very well informed about the attacks of government authorities and advertising communities and "social media" on anyone. Apple has so far lived the best possible compromise IMHO.

This will be helpful for me. I am the worst.

I close my tabs in safari, close Instagram and twitter only to open them back up again 5 seconds later and if there is nothing new I keep refreshing like this can’t be right the app isn’t working

I like Tim Cook both as a CEO and person and I don’t care what anyone at MacRumors has to say about it. He’s not perfect but has good principles and is smarter than most anyone here.

I support Cook in multiple ways. But I also think in a sense, you have to realize that he _has_ to be smarter than anyone running almost a $1 billion company. He’s in a position where it’s not about just Apple, but being intellectual and well rounded as a person to even be in the position that he is a CEO. Everything he says and does will be scrutinized, which is why it’s vital that he be a leader that he is for this company.

Does Tim Cook believe access to technology and the internet, is a Fundamental Human Right?
He often takes swipes at Google et. al. for their privacy while running a company that make tech for only the wealthy of the world.
Tim Cook isn't being unreasonable here.

The United Nations declaration of Human Rights, signed into law in 1948 by dozens of countries (including the USA) includes:

Article 12.
No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy [..snip additional details ..]

"I'm not political.", said Tim Cook.
How can this be since this TC is the most political CEO that Apple has ever had. He sticks his nose into all the "important" political issues.
I miss Steve Jobs.
I miss him too, but he died before this whole data privacy issue really took off. I wonder how he’d have come off. Regarding the FBI & iOS security, probably just like Cook plus several expletives. I have little doubt that, being the world’s most prominent CEO, he’d have had to publically take stands on most of the issues Tim’s “nose” has, including testifying before Congress. The only real reason I miss Jobs is that Siri wouldn’t be an idiot.
I am not political.
Launched homosexual pride watch bands/faces.
That’s not politics. He’s just saying he wouldn’t run for public office. Relax with the bands.

You should study that beyond the headline. Here’s some info on that deal from him. It was about integration, not data mining.

I don't have any problem with Tim Cook besides the fact that he's put physical design over function too often, or let it happen, and at the same time raised consumer prices for less function. Other than that he's a great guy.

I'm sorry. But I do not believe a CEO on his blue eyes. In these kind of situations they respond in a way that it won't hurt their company. Do you believe statements given by Mark Zuckerberg?

Let independent researchers figure out what they did with the data. Untill proven otherwise I'm highly sceptical against any company who's processing/gathering data.

Nah, you still wont believe in independent researchers results if its not in favor in your biases.

"I found I was spending a lot more time than I should"

The lifetime I need to update apps and new OSX versions has been increasing unusually fast in recent years.
System settings are becoming increasingly complex, especially under iOS.

General-Settings-iPad.jpg

Although we have not yet reached the chaotic madhouse of system settings under Windows, Apple has to be very careful that everything remains manageable and simple or becomes so again.

IMHO an excellent operating system (macOS) does not have to reinvent itself from scratch forever. Especially as far as the user interface is concerned.

I don't see Tim Cook as a political person. Maybe relative to Jobs but I'd rather have Cook's advocacy than Jobs'. Things that he's spoken out about are largely about values important to Apple and things that I think most people agree about. Climate change, DACA, privacy, gay rights, etc. I'd rather have someone of his importance defending these important issues than ignoring them. I agree that he would not do well in the political arena though, I think that's more of what he's saying.

I do see him as pushing a clear political agenda from the social side, like others did before becoming professional politicians. Important issues are the long forgotten mac pro and mac mini, the crappy new keyboard, Siri or the other myriad of issues directly related to HIS JOB. Climate change, gay rights and pink unicorns should be left for others to discuss. It's my opinion. MANY people feels bewildered -to say the least- about this new Apple and instead of a clear lidership we have a guy talking about social issues? We don't need Apple to discuss about gay rights. We need Apple to create and deliver great products. However we are having too much of the former and too few of the latter. In fact it seems to me that Apple is taking us as rich beta testers.

With respect to privacy, I see there are two Apples. One for this side of the planet and another one for the Chinese side. A case of corporate schizophrenia? Not cool.
