Batteries are consumable. Life-long lasting batteries using Li-ion do NOT exist. It is unreasonable to expect Apple to keep footing the bill to replace a battery that ages like Li-ion batteries do. Apple can detect a failing battery and a consumed battery. If it's failed, it's covered under warranty. If it's consumed, you have to buy another battery. Batteries don't last forever and they never have. Every one is hell bent on blowing this whole fiasco out of proportion because it's Apple. Get over yourselves. /rant

This is true but apple needs to meet me half way with honestly about my battery health. They also need to honor the fact that apple care + covers batteries. I also would not mind a cheaper battery replacement than 80 bucks. So apple here is the deal make the replacements cheaper honor the warranty and tell me when I am in the danger of throttling and do this from the get go.

Amazing to see still so many people saying Apple did nothing wrong.

The level of their “loyalty” is beyond imagination.

What's more amazing is that, given that I'm more on Apple's side here, and others who have been on the side of the fence as myself have said what I have - that Apple totally buggered up by not communicating this from the get go, that we now get lumped together as some sort of apologists.

If that makes us 'apologists' and 'loyal' then methinks your viewpoint is heavily skewed towards just wanting to hate on Apple.

Maybe some of us should reconsider doing business with Apple?

If you find a better alternative for your purposes, then buy that product. Why wait? You should have already.

It sounds like a design flaw from an engineering level. The batteries used were probably either too small for the draw, ...

Or Apple put a laptop-grade processor core in their SOC. Too much for any cell phone battery. But a huge performance boost for users when down-clocked/throttled just the right amount.

Amazing to see still so many people saying Apple did nothing wrong.

If "wrong" is enough for lots of customers to take their money elsewhere, then Apple did no wrong. Look at the stock price, which is based on expectation of future profits. No drop.

It’s not easy switching when you’re on a budget. If I tell you what phone I want, will you send me $ to cover the switch?

Honestly, what they were doing was all in good faith. They could've been clearer in the way they handled things originally, yes, but they stopped phones from randomly shutting down. That is what matters the most to me.

I have been thinking about this a lot over the past 3 years. I was a long time Apple fan, but feel like Apple has soured recently.

The trouble is, I still feel like Apple has the best stuff out there when compared to the competition. But I do feel like the competition is closing the gap, so in a few years, maybe I will switch.

Depends on what you want. I like the Pixel 2 XL but it’s too pricey for me to switch to. The Note 8 is amazing but the battery is too small. I am content with my 8+ for now, but I have to see how Apple remedies the throttling situation before I re-up with them for a new phone.

how about you design phones with batteries that can run them at full speed for say at least 2 years?

Except Apple isn't the only company that does this. Laptop manufacturers having been doing this for decades. Where was everyone's outrage over that? Oh, I forgot. It's because it's Apple. xD
no they haven't.

my 3 year old dell still runs at full speed when on battery.

Apple did nothing wrong. I'm disgusted with all the misleading stories and clickbait headlines.

Don't like what Apple does? Use Androids.
I personally don't like when people say this. People shouldn't have to pay for a brand new phone for them to avoid having problems and issues with their device. They should report said problems to Apple or their device manufacturer, if they use something other than Apple. I've seen "Just switch to Android if you don't like Apple's practices" way too much, and it has gotten annoying.

It shouldn't be running at full speed on battery. It should be running in Power Saver mode, which does indeed throttle a device.

No one is stopping you so go ahead and do it, however do you realize that only an infinitesimal number of people (class action lawyers included) care about any these non-issues and the others before them. Most people just want to be able to use their phones and could care less about the minutia. The wrongdoers are those involved in the class action which will not benefit anyone other than the scummy lawyers filing the case(s).

I like the update that provided better power management for my iPhone. My iPhone is one that slows down at times and I have noticed that slowing. I have also noticed that my iPhone started needing more frequent charges (in the car driving, at time during the day, etc.). But then, my iPhone started making it through the day again and I was delighted. It is more important that my iPhone make it through the day than for it to be the faster it can be.

I say, "Thank You Apple!"

The only fault is that they didn't say more about what "power management" meant. But really? It doesn't matter to me. Apple had my iPhone's back on this one and I'm glad.
