America's made mistakes. Native American treatment, slavery, Japanese camps... but I don't read about those event happening still (well, reservations are still a thing but it's a deeper issue than CCP's "forced camps"). Because America has a system where the people change it. That cant happen in China. China CCP is "god" there.
Oh, America is still making its fair share of mistakes.

While the Apple China investment number significant, part of doing business. This article shows the significant Apple investments in America. I would like to see more Apple investments that directly create jobs, especially in manufacturing. Built here the goal. As noted in this article, 400 plus billion will create 20K jobs in America. Not a big number of jobs for the amount invested.

How many black people are unjustly in prison in america? How many are shot in the streets by cops? How many civilians do americans kill overseas every year? How many immigrants are working the fields for unfair pay? How many homeless people are there compared to empty homes owned by banks? How many veterans kill themselves or go hungry every year? How many opioid deaths? How many covid deaths?
Do you really want to compare conditions in America to China? You sure that is the direction you want to go? America has its problems for sure, but at least in America you can openly protest those issues that you mentioned to enact change, see what happens to protestors in China.

I see no issue as long as he's not violating US laws.

So much outrage...Wondering how much is real and how much is faux?

Will anyone here be voting with their wallets and purchase phones/tablets/computers from Apple competitors? Yeah, that's what I thought.
You really don't see an issue with someone preaching privacy and human rights on one hand and signing a sweetheart deal with one of the biggest violators of privacy & human rights with the other?

Really?

Google works with the Chinese military. What does the stupid US government do about that, nothing at all, except get campaign contributions for certain members.

We have a sick media.

I go to Front Page of Washington Post and NY Times, and I ctrl+f Apple and Cook and CEO, and see nothing of the sort.

this one will be of no consequence sadly

Please tell us what protesting gets americans. You sure can have some big protests but what does it actually get you? Union membership is at 10% voting protections are currently being eviscerated in multiple republican states and nothing has changed regarding police brutality despite those incredible protests. You can shout, yes, but are you heard?

Try being gay in certain countries in Middle East, or a woman who wants to drive a car occasionally.
Try being a Uyghur Muslim in China or protesting on behalf of democracy.
Try resisting a forced medical procedure in Austria and soon to follow other countries in Europe and expecting to be able to leave your house and just go on a stroll, in almost the year 2022.

But we're all so customizable oppressed here in America because sometimes we have to listen to things we dont agree with, on the internet, and clicking out of said content is too much to ask.

So, Apple pledged to invest in their third-biggest market.

"Secretly". (A.k.a., how business deals are made.)

What a clickbait story.

I dont think I mentioned America not making any mistakes. But we're not talking about "Should we open the doors to an encampment and let those being held there for their religious beliefs out" level. Were at policy level mistakes.

Apple is a corporation. A corporation's job is to make money for shareholders.

So let's just finally dispense with the nonsense that Apple is somehow a socially responsible company.

Delete this app, allow that app for political reasons. Support that cause or this cause for whatever reason you state as a company. But don't lecture anyone else about social responsibility on ANY TOPIC whatsoever when you're in bed with what is currently one of the most repressive regimes in the world, and getting worse by the day.

Personally, I don't care what cause Apple and Cook support or don't support. I don't buy their products because I have an affinity to the same causes they support. I don't really care if the product is recyclable, socially responsible, vegan certified, oppression free, or whatever. I buy the product because it's GOOD. That's it.

And that's fine for me. It may not be for others, and I get that too. I'm a pretty simple person living a sort of bullcrap life at a stupid little job in a dumpy state on the Easter seaboard of the US. I'm not changing the world, or making a dent in any of this stuff. Which is pretty obvious, since ol' Timmy is gonna support China's actions with or without my money.

But don't feed me the social responsibility line on one side, and be such a turd on the other. Don't try and convince me I'm a turd, when you're more of one. Just make good stuff. Leave the politics and causes out of it.

I feel the same way about actors and musicians. I enjoy a lot of artists who I totally disagree with on a multitude of issues, but I really don't care. I'm not here for your cause, I'm here for the entertainment.

In the Court of Public Opinion, at least here in the Sates, I think Tim Cook may (now) be in BIG trouble !

I think he did the right thing to make a better understanding and agreement with China authorities.

Talking is good - lay out any challenges and decide in advance how things can be handled with some negotiation.

It's good Diplomacy in my opinion.

Furthere to that - I think it has payed off very well for Apple doing business in China. It is their country and their rules and Apple seems to respect the rules of all other countries in the world - and that's important for business.

Tim Cook is running a business - that's all.

Governments should take note at the successes Apple has had with it's business diplomacy - maybe governments could apply these diplomatic techniques. Respect for all nations sounds like the best way to get along.

"Unjustly prisoned" is a pretty subjective term.

Casualties of war are terrible and are to be avoided and nobody is here cheering for it and investigations behind such atrocities are conducted openly.

Immigrants? Legal or illegal because if are speaking on illegal immigrants getting unfair pay I'm not about to even talk about that. Nobody is forcing them here but their own crime riddled govt. Legla immigrants will typically make better money than the average white man.

Homeless people deserve bank owned homes? Now you are just veering into straight communism of which China is. Spare us that argument.

There is every effort in the world by people to assist veterans but the leadership doesn't prioritize them. Instead prioritizing illegal migrants.

Opioid deaths? I guess drug use in the world is limited to the United States?? wtf?

Covid deaths? Please, you couldn't list one legitimate source to provide us the Chinese dead from Covid. Early on, there were reports of plumes of smoke with chemical signatures that are indicative of mass graves on fire in remote areas of China. SO yea... try to do a moral comparison, please.

This is craziness. I don’t think Apple should be investing so heavily in the Chinese economy given their track record on human rights and the environment.

Bah - what do we really know for sure about anything at all? Look first in our own countries for "track record" on these issues before insisting that we know some other country is doing something wrong.

My issue isn't with the definition of a publically traded company and its duties to make money for shareholders. I think most have issues with Apple posturing as if they are above board with morals and justice in how they operate their press/marketing/position. They run around praising LGBTQ rights while ignoring the atrocities occurring in the Middle east as it relates to gay rights. They praise their own environmental record while working with manufacturing in countries that have zero standards. They pat themselves on the back about social justice and human rights causes while behind the scenes they promote governments who destroy and trample on human rights and social justice.

Hand it to apple, they have a great PR team. While Cook trashes on his own causes outside the borders of the United States by working with despotic regimes, back home, Apple smells like roses to the unwashed masses with their pretty rainbow-colored watch bands, (RED) products, BLM stances.

I have the same issue with Apple as I do with Nike. Just posers who don't walk their talk.
