So Apple's next big thing is to connect to someone else's innovation.

These health things are great, but hopefully companies like Apple don't hold consumers ransom by creating exclusive partnerships with companies like this to prevent their products from reporting health data to competitors devices. It would be a real shame in the future if the only health people are people that can afford $5000 worth of Apple hardware.

That's cool that it's progressing quite quickly, I would really like to see this in the Apple Watch although in a band might be more likely.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has allegedly been spotted testing a prototype glucose monitor that's connected to his Apple Watch,

Damn. Tim lookin' good these days.

They may be trying to avoid FDA on the watch, but any glucose monitoring 'device', even if built within a strap, will need some serious regulatory approvals, trials and evidence before it could be used for medical purposes.

And I hope they're doing that, because this is really exciting.

They realize that but this keeps tge watch out of the FDA scrutiny, puts it on something like a band if thats where it ends up.

It's definitely exciting stuff. But I will never ever wear a square shaped watch. Never liked it before smart watches, and will never like it after. Give us something along the lines of the Moto 360 without the flat tire and you can take my money then. Thought Apple was all about elegance in design... But they missed the mark on this one. Cue all the haters who say Apple doesn't need my one sale....

Just to nit-pick... it can be worn anywhere. Since it's invasive, it needs to be moved around regularly since the skin gets irritated and scars slightly at each insertion point.

Source: My wife, who's a diabetes educator, type II diabetic, and has worn various glucose monitors (and insulin pumps, for that matter) for much of the past decade.

and who says this is an apple exclusive? Or did the article just fail to mention this.?.

Why wouldn't it be exclusive? It would be an immense selling point for both the watch and the iPhone. The Apple Watch is already exclusive to the iPhone. They'd have to make the Apple Watch cross-platform.

Good guy Tim Cook and his glucose monitor. Glucose monitors are the next big thing (tm) and a must have if you want to be cool, just like good guy Cook. However, an alcohol level monitor would certainly be useful to more people, including hipsters.

Hopefully Apple does it and they eventually WILL seek FDA approval. My wife is type 1 (ie since ~12 years old, pancreas failure) and I've seen the stuff that's "state of the art" that makes me cry. Even the good companies are not producing anything near an easy-to-use experience. I'd love Apple to make something good quality that works with apps and modern tech.

I think it's a good idea for people to be more personally involved in their health but collecting data and being able to properly interpret it and know what to do with it is another thing. Once you get into anything that requires FDA approval the room for error is next to none. Whatever Apple does in this space I hope they go slow and do some trials before marketing it to a wider customer base. I'm also assuming different countries have different regulations around this so some of this stuff might be US only for a while and slowly roll out to other countries?

this seems really cool if you have some medical condition where you need to monitor your glucose level.

Little worried though that otherwise healthy people will start becoming obsessive over stuff like this when it's not really necessary to be monitoring your glucose at all times.
Ever heard of diabetes?? There is no downside to being able to monitor your blood sugar 24/7. At the very least it will help you understand how different foods affect the levels and could lead to better food choices. There are a lot of things in life to worry about, this isn't one of them. *disclaimer: I am medical specialist working in the diabetes arena for many years.
