Just support your products over longer periods of time Apple/Cook!
That would make a huge difference, not those empty words.
Ummm they support their products for 6 years. Thats the longest in that industry. So...

What about China? The #1 polluter by a lot.

Will they get lax rules while other countries struggle economically to adapt to new green policies?
China just became the #1 polluter. The previous however many years we had cars and highways were pretty much all the USA being by far the #1 polluter.

Secondly, Tim Cook is from the USA. Why wouldn’t he speak to us? He is not from China. We keep risking falling further behind China because we are refusing to change to stay ahead of the competition globally.

i'm confused... isn't this the company that glued their entire internal together so you can't change the battery or anything??

Tell me again how that's "environemtnally friendly"??
First you tell me why it’s not environmentally friendly?

Look the rich are going to be fine when climate change really starts having a negative impact for people who aren’t rich.

Some crazy stuff in here. The blame culture at its finest. You want to blame Apple because you go out and decide to buy a new phone every year. Maybe take a look in the mirror. What is Apple supposed to do, update on a 5 year cycle while all their less environmental caring competitors update on a 1 year cycle. Apple is the only manufacturer that provides software updates for phones over 5 years old. How about, have some self control and stop upgrading your phone every year, nobody but yourself to blame. Cars are updated every year too, do you go out and buy a new car every year. Do you blame the car manufacturers for forcing you to buy their new car because its got a few new features. Just ridiculous stuff.

True. Good point but their devices last a long time for those uninterested in annual updating or buyinh the latest thing.

Yes, they do. The phones and computers run for a good 5 years of software support, yes, and I am very glad they do. But, at least for notebooks, we should be able to upgrade the storage when we want to at a later date. Not everybody has huge amounts of money to spare, they can start with 256 GB and work their way to 512 GB 2 years down the line when they have some money to spare, but cannot do with Apple. At that point, you will only have to sit with what you have or sell and buy a new device. That upgrade culture, that forced purchase of a higher-than-required thing and, therefore, paying more today than you need, is what Apple is promoting. That is wrong.

About AirPods, what can I say.. the convenience is good, but the life expectancy? Reports may be great in colder climates, but towards the equator, these things run great for a year and half max, and then degrade rather quickly when it comes to battery life. For the price these disposables come, it becomes really hard to justify the great software support.

AirPods Max in my country are going to be over USD 800. AirPods are around USD 200. AirPods Pro are USD 350. The computers are similarly priced way high and the lowest offerings give just a little too less, making you think of upgrading to a higher specification machine you do not need today. The iPhone 12 still starts with 64 GB today. Removing the power adapter completely, instead of offering the 18 W adapter as standard, and calling this cost-cutting for profiteering as concern for climate change. That sort of thing.

They can reign in their greed just a little - just a little.

They recycle every bit of their products. Because of Apple’s software support, even when people upgrade, they either return their product or pass it down to other family members.
The phones that actually end up in the dumpster are cheap Android phones. I’ve never seen an Apple user who treats his Old Apple product as e waste. It is either maintained or recycled. Or atleast sold for some minimal resale value.

Wouldn't you say that if the iPhones were on a biennial cycle, that would be simply better? How long can this annual upgrade (and passing down) last?

In some ways, he already has. He never seems to be familiar with the products when he gives a speech during a product event. Have you noticed when he says, 'we are excited about X-Y-Z while maintaining his signature dead-pan expression?

This is true and what I miss since Steve left the stage. There really is no excitement with these guys. They seem to be going through the motions on stage, trying to fake excitement, when they are clearly not the ones built for it. They are not the guys who get excited about technology. They are the guys who do things.

Only one guy seems to be excited to bring things to people and tell them about it, and that is Hair Force One. Steve connected the technology with the person at all times. He was about experiences. These guys are about technology. And you have nailed it with the phrase "dead-pan expression" when it comes to Cook. Never seen a Duchenne Smile on this one.

If you look at their new line-up (and lets be fair, we can only look at what they are trying to do now rather than what they did 5 years ago), the M1 macs have on board storage that is best in class BECAUSE it is on board.

And you can always get an increase by getting an external SSD as most people do. They actually outprice themselves with Storage so people are doing this all the time.

Maybe the people here can stop wanting so much and be happy with what they have. That'd reduce more waste in tech.

If Apple does that, then Apple will go bankrupt and the only environmentally concerned Phone manufacturer will not exist, making it bad for the Environmental impact of the entire industry. The entire industry is moving with highly competitive products, with new products every other week. Apple already is extremely slow with its annual upgrade cycle when compared to other phone manufacturers.

Apple does not even make huge changes every cycle. The reviews always say that if you bought an iPhone last year, no need to upgrade this year. Majority of the phone buyers upgrade every 2 to 3 years or even slower. But when they upgrade, they expect a latest model. Therefore Apple has to upgrade every year, else the buyer will go for another brand. And once a loyal customer is lost, they might not come back. Making for very bad long term business.

Apple recycles old iPhones when a user upgrades. An old iPhone is 100% recycled while putting back all the raw materials back into the supply chain. No other company for no other product in no industry does this as far as I know. If Apple is not successful, then god help us, cause no one else is going to do it. So please don't suggest something that will make Apple loose money.

Hey Tim why aren't the battery and the cushions replaceable on my Beats Solo Pro's?

Not enough. My 2010/2011 Mac pro / macbook pros can easily be used for several more years. Except Apple does not provide security updates any more for the OS those machines can run & artificially excludes them from running the current OS versions.

You need to cite those “facts” that China “just became” the #1 polluter.

yeaaah....I'd say bs Timmy. I get it, you need to keep the show for having a tool like Al Gore on the board, but you're really not helping anyone. Show some numbers what and where needs to be cut and eliminated from our lives by country and then we can start having an informed discussion. Till then you can take your platitudes and your green feelings on your next trip to Yosemity park

So, just marketing.

They produce the costliest disposables on the planet, promote annual upgrade culture and are talking about climate change.
Yes, just marketing backed with action. Producing a disposable product that last 10 years is better than producing a "totally repairable" product that lasts 2 years, but it seems climate change is more aligned with carbon footprint and green house gases, etc.

Love how so many people here are trashing Cook and Apple. Yet continue to purchase Apple products. Hypocrisy at its finest!

My last Apple purchase is 2019 Mac Pro.
The previous purchase is about 8-9 years ago with 2010/2012 Mac Pro, following PowerMacG5 Quad six years before, alongside with 2003 MDD. So clearly I am not typical Apple buyer, can I have privilege for trashing Cook :p ?

Zero iPhone. My solely iOS device is iPod 6th but now is unsupported. My mobile device of choice is Xperia because most of other Android makers doesn't have "normal" display. Either with notch or punch hole which isn’t my cup of tea.

MBP on my signature is given from company. I am never purchase sealed computer from Apple, because it the real e-waste once unsupported. Even without being unsupported, my MBP plagued with sticky butterfly keyboard, stage light effect from fragile flexible ribbon under the hinge, doesn't translate longevity of premium device. It was real throwaway laptop from day one.

If Apple really care with environmental issues, at least they should allowed Macs having keys component *ahem* upgradable. At least give them extra vacant slot for storage so user can add their own if everything soldered in one package. Apple can provide if they want, but unfortunately they not intended to.

Until they break, or the user damages them, then the repair costs are insanely high, and they often steer to the user having to purchase a new device because it doesn't make any sense to repair a 4-5 year old computer.

A vast majority of what is driving climate change is China and India., who aren't even required to address their carbon emissions until well past 2030. Even though the US pulled out of the Paris Accords, they had already met the goals for carbon emission reduction. But sure, let's destroy the US economy...
Per capita carbon emission in the US is over twice that of China and 5 to 10 times that of India. So, if the aim is to even out each countries contribution to the problem, either you allow them to produce US levels of pollution (not a good idea) or reduce pollution in the US.

All this negativity. What do you think is less harmful? Buying crap from Aliexpress that breaks and gets tossed out. Or Apple devices that last many years, do not contain many common harmful chemicals and are produced by a company committed to be energy neutral?

Sure, if we don’t sell or buy anything, and all die, that would be even better for the planet. But you can’t deny Apple has shown strong leadership when it comes to climate change and sustainability.
