What I find interesting is the reference to the best 5K display. This, combined with laptop, iPad,and iPhone also always being hyped for their super fantastic screens, yet Apple is out of the monitor business. To me, the monitor is the most important part of the interface between person and computer. It makes me think the future of Apple is all all-in-one devices.

I could be very wrong though. There are obviously some very good monitors out there to meet specific needs. It just seems odd to bail on monitors, especially when they already have the displays in the iMac.

I wonder if the new keyboards will have touch-id and the touchbar? It seems necessary to maintain consistency across the platform - something they have claimed they wish to maintain.

Toxic, juvenile MacRumors comments in 3...2...1...

Huge thread full of nothing but complaints.

Amazing how many people sit here waiting for an opportunity to express their unfunny nonsense. What a life you guys lead.

True. For too many people here, all they know how to do is complain. It's sad.

If you're unhappy with the products, don't buy them. D'uh.

I'm sure you're all aware of your contributions to the negativity. Why not try something new? Something like, I don't know, contributing your thoughts about the actual topic of post. What are your thoughts about the state of the Macs? Mine- Dire need of an upgrade. My personal pipe dream is a user upgrade capable machine. What would you like to see? Me - a new more powerful mac mini that I have been moaning about for over 2 years it seems. I seriously doubt I'll get it, but hey, at least it relates to the damn topic. amirite?

Complaining about someone else's negative opinions while only contributing negative opinions yourself... well that's just a bunch of pots thinking the color of the kettles is ugly. Spoiler alert: they both are.

I'll tell you what Apple could do that would make people stand up and clap. Make the iMac THICKER so they could control the cooling better and so they can put in a real Desktop class GPU. Then on the back of the monitor put a couple access points or one big access point. Then make the hard drive, memory and maybe even CPU and GPU upgradeable. THAT would make people stand up and cheer.

I'd _love_ to see a proper desktop from Apple. One that is not super thin and welded shut, but reasonably designed, where you can actually upgrade components (like memory, SSD's and GPU), and not be stuck with an integrated screen. Honestly the old Mac Pro tower was the best computer they made to date imo, including all of their latest stuff.

Or why not a new Apple Display for TB3 that has a slot for a desktop GPU (ie, the screen works as a eGPU enclosure). Would make a fantastic docking station for any laptop Mac.

One can always dream..

"we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that.”

This is a flat out lie. The Mac Pro has been abandoned. I personally don't use the Mac Pro, but I sympathize with the people who do. I'm also concerned, because it's fkucing obvious that ignoring graphics professionals & creative types could damage Apple's brand long term. How can they be so oblivious to this?

Apple can do better than to say, "don't worry" for years and years while the Pro desktop is abandoned...

really? you can get them pretty cheap nowadays.
i'll give you one if you want to come pick it up.

(not joking-- anyone want a 1,1 and can pick it up in williamsburg or greenpoint? let me know.. it's yours)

this reminds me of an interview before the apple watch

"we have amazing things in the pipeline"

years later we have...
a bigger ipad
slightly thinner computers that compromises on performance
and a fitness tracker.

boom!

Exactly!!
I've been waiting 3 years for a new Mac mini. There is absolutely no way Lord Jobs would have bungled the Mac in way Timmy has, Jobs was a Mac user and cared about the core users like himself. yes I'm typing this on a 2016 MacBook Pro, however I no longer recommend Macs to friends and relatives.

Sounds like the mythical "pipeline" full of great products that never materialize he keeps talking about.

Oh, and BTW, Tim, not everyone wants a screen permanently attached to their computer. So please consider making a headless computer again that isn't as weak as the 2014 Mini and not as outrageously expensive as the Pro.
I agree.
After the 24 inch iMac I bought new burned through 2 graphics cards and it would have been $800 to get yet another card I decided to buy the updated Mac mini. That was 16 months ago. Still waiting for the update. I will never buy another iMac.

Apple needs to do something great on the desktop and the gimmicky touch bar isn't it. Whether it's performance or hardware design or a new way of interacting, or all of the above, they must prove that they are still relevant on the desktop. The new MacBook Pros are not a good sign. After playing around with the Surface Studio, Apple needs to do something major to impress me.

People don't give Tim Cook enough credit. He's regularly accused of being too numbers-focused around here. He may not be the singular creative force that Steve was, but it seems pretty clear that he understands how to manage a very large company in a way that allows that creativity to grow. And at Apple's size, that's what you need. I wouldn't want a single "wannabe-Steve" trying to personally invent everything.

Apple is, first and foremost, a computer company. However, they're so behind in desktop technology (no Mac Pro update in 3 years!) that there's absolutely no way Tim understands how to manage a computer company. Managing a computer company involves making computers more than once every 3 years.
