Managing a computer company involves making computers more than once every 3 years.

I sort of feel bad for Apple, because really there haven't been a lot of substantial improvements in CPU tech to speak of, so they're forced to ship random crap. Apple probably has some threshold or another for when they can throw away their tooling, which means they can't really cycle through ideas quickly; their metrics and processes are based on making tens of millions of devices, not hundreds of thousands to a few million.

Apple is killing off the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro. They no longer sell a display and those two lines are too niche. Remember when Steve Jobs did his famous 2x2 grid when Apple's product map was all over the place (consumers & pros/laptops & desktops)? Consumer and pro no longer makes sense because the consumer models can do all the stuff most "pros" needed to do. Now it's just a few 3D and video guys left who need the highest end specs. Apple doesn't need that market. Their whole product line is too broad before they introduce future stuff (like AR or cars). There's a new 2x2 grid for computers in Cupertino: iOS x2 (iPhone/iPad) and macOS x2 (MacBooks/iMacs). The delineation between iPads & iPad Pros and MacBooks & MacBook Pros is arbitrary. With the AppleTV and Watch, that's 6 bigger product lines to maintain in addition to services that they have to get better at and AI, where they'll also have to give focus in order to stay competitive. Time to cut the fat and there are no better candidates to drop than the mini and pro.

Tim, folks in the media rightfully question your stance on the Mac. All one needs to do is look at what's out there and the ridiculous prices you still charge for them even though they are woefully out of date.

The Mac is a second class citizen - just as the iPhone 4" and soon the 4.7" as you pursue gross profit margin over what delights your customers.

Reign it in Tim or you won't have this core of Apple centric people to buy your stuff.

They need to fix the following:
  • Don't rip people off with garbage components (AMD mobile GPUs in desktops? LOL)
  • Fix the miserable airflow which causes the iMacs CPU to run extremely hot at the expense of USELESS thinness and then get away with false advertising claiming "4ghz speed!!!!" while having to downthrottle because of said heating issues
  • Not sell a Mac Pro with last years tech and next years prices with ZERO available upgrades for GPUs

Well said. Unfortunately probably none of those things will come true. They'll be even thinner, more heat throttled, and less upgradable than ever before.

I'll tell you what Apple could do that would make people stand up and clap. Make the iMac THICKER so they could control the cooling better and so they can put in a real Desktop class GPU. Then on the back of the monitor put a couple access points or one big access point. Then make the hard drive, memory and maybe even CPU and GPU upgradeable. THAT would make people stand up and cheer.

YES!!!!

This really irks me about CEOs/CFOs etc at the height of management. They should take this as a big sign they are out of touch here. If employees are asking and questioning your commitment to product lines and company direction, you should damn well use that as a warning sign that your customers have even less sense of assuredness, understanding in your company's direction, and faith in your brand. It would do well for them to come clean and state this to their customers, not "leaked" on some internal town hall meeting. Be upfront with your customers and speak! Otherwise we're left to making our own assumptions and leaving ship.

I don't. I don't think there is a better laptop or desktop processor out there than those from Intel.

AMD makes a darn fine CPU. And Apple could buy them and have end to end x86 and graphics. The new AMD CPU coming out soon seems to be a beast. When I built my own PC's I always had AMD inside.

Thanks for checking in Tim. Unfortunately for us, there are lots of people who would eagerly buy a non-gimped mac mini, or are still holding out hope for a actually powerful Mac Pro machines. You just sadly don't give a $%^&@ about us.

No one is writing apps for iOS, with an actual iOS device, and people aren't suckers enough to buy something they don't need - iMac with a screen, or a super expensive laptop, when a mini fits the bill perfectly.

Read my sig VVVVVVV it gets more and more true, every day.

The paragraph above could have been written by a consultant or maybe a Wall St. professional in order to justify a plan to cut costs, but it is a misunderstanding of the Apple brand.

What's the difference between Mac and Windows? Many people would (still) say a Mac is better for graphics professionals, whether true or not. People have believed that for many years, and it has provided tremendous brand value to Apple. I would argue there is a massive risk in alienating these professionals, even though I agree they are a niche.

Sorry Tim, I have moved on. For the first time since 2009, I have purchased a Windows based PC. I have been using MacBook Pros ever since then, but I need a discrete graphics card, and you've now jacked up the prices on MacBook Pros with discrete graphics cards to $2499. I just can't do that. I managed to swing $1999 for the last three MacBook Pros I bought, but I can't go any higher.

Instead, I bought a Dell XPS 15, with a i7-6700HQ Quad Core an SSD and an nVidia GTX 960M, for $1399. I've done it, I've switched back to PC. I'll probably buy an Android for my next phone too, which kills me, but Androids play nicer with Windows. The Pixel XL looks pretty good.

I never would have left the Apple ecosystem if you hadn't made the MacBook Pro a worse laptop for far more money. But I guess you need that money to fund development of new and exciting watch bands.
