Well ****, if you put it like that... I spend $3000 total for a whole year on venti iced caramel macchiatos. And that’s not taken to account to some days where I buy two per day. iPhone is cheaper. Skejsjsjd

Or, I spend well over the price of the iPhone X in less than 3 months for IAP...

I understand your skepticism, heh. iPhone X is a very expensive device.

But breaking it down monthly can make sense, even if it’s for the marketing purpose of artificially making it seem more affordable. This is a device you’d be using on a daily basis.

You see it frequently with broadband providers, where they boast saving £5 a month and that’s what gets the people to sign up; yet you’ll get a much slower and more unreliable product as a result and the consumer will almost immediately regret it. For something you need to live with on a daily basis it wasn’t worth the savings.

Not sure if I’m articulating this particularly well, but a phone today is much more than a phone was in the ‘90s. It could feasibly be a person’s only device for everything they need. Again, it’s an expensive device — but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s overpriced.

Great. Maybe they can price the 11 at $2,000 or maybe $2,500? After all, just put ANY higher price "in the proper context" and it too can be an "incredible bargain." Hopefully Apple knows this and will significantly jack up all prices accordingly.

Apple is a smartphone company, so I wouldn't be shocked if they breach the $2,000 threshold in a couple of releases. Anyone wanting an iOS based phone has no other game in town, so if they jack the prices up people will pay it. Especially if they can convince everyone to only think about the monthly payment?

I think PPL would buy it regardless of the price

Tim Cook could have safely priced it at $1999

Why only $1999? Seems just any price will be rationalized by this crowd. I propose $3,000 for the 11. Do I hear $4,000? $5,000?

Com'on Apple, price it at what we will really pay.

And get those accessory prices up too! What are you running here? A charity?

Cook pointed out that many people pay for the iPhone month by month. At carrier prices that startsomewhere around $33 per month, that's "lessthan a coffee a day at one of these nice coffee places."

Omg this is such an american way of thinking, no offense lol
What a tired old trick. Space the pricing for anything out over a long enough period of time and it looks a lot more reasonable than it otherwise would. It’s how people have bought houses and cars they can’t afford for many years, so why not phones?

So many things are compared to the daily price of a cup of coffee.

Wait until you see the max price of the iMac Pro
:D

I meant more like paying stuff they cant afford on credit because everything is a bargain if marketed right.

Just look at those car commercials in the us „get a brand new audi at only 99 Dollar* a month! „ get your flu shot at your nearest CVS and save another 25 bucks on your next purchase! Sign up for xy and you receive a 500 Dollar amazon gift card now!

Insane to me lol however i have to say stuff like Adidas and Nike is SO CHEAP in the US

that's capitalism run amok.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

it'll all come crashing down eventually but for now.. wheeeee!

:)

that said, there are plenty of Americans who can and will buy an iPhone just using their spending money..

on the interwebz, we're mostly going to hear how unaffordable the iPhone is because mostly the people who can't necessarily afford it will be the ones speaking up.. and the people who can easily or somewhat easily buy it are classy enough not to respond "what? a thousand dollars? no big deal"

i don't really think Apple is targeting or marketing their top line products at inner city kids anyway..

Well, we do tend to take the "but the payments are small" thing a little too far, but Cook is not wrong. First, most of us (at least in the US) are paying by the month. It's built into our plan. And we should take into account the trade-in value of our old device.

Considering how much value one gets out of a great smartphone, the cost of even the X is not really that high.

Of course, it's all highly relative to one's income. Thankfully, you can get a great iPhone (or Android) for much less if you go with one of the cheaper models, or a used device.

Who is spending $33 on coffee each month?

A LOT of people. In fact, many spend that PER WEEK. Ask anyone who walks around with a Starbucks payment card and finds themselves reloading it often. It's a big habit with a lot of people.

Yeah. That’s the saving grace here. I mean, to me, there’s no earthly way that the X is worth $650 more than an SE or $300 more than an 8, but at least those options are available. So if you see $1000 of value in an X, then I certainly disagree, but godspeed to you.

But it’s NOT just a phone. It’s a pocket computer. I use my iPhone as much, maybe more, than my desktop. If it were just a phone, I’d agree, but it’s not. Not even close.

That, and a 4K 60 FPS video camera + editing suite (iMovie), 12 MP camera (actually, it has THREE cameras on it), navigation device, locating device (if you want to know where your family is), video phone (FaceTime), ...

you get my point.

Today's smartphones are a LOT more than either a phone or computer, and the iPhone X is top-of-the-line. Some people have shot feature films or commercials with these things.

Once you start looking at everything a smartphone does, it's amazing we aren't paying $3000 for them.

It is, but it’s the way a lot of us justify purchases, and a way a lot of us spend mindlessly.

I actually stopped buying blended coffee out, and did save a lot of money. Even if I meet friends for “coffee,” I’ll get tea, which is much cheaper. I got a milk frother and some flavored syrups for when I want a latte or similar at home. I haven’t had coffee out (except with dinner) for close to two years now.

I still spend mindlessly on little things, just not coffee. ;)

I hope that by increasing production that it’s not at the expense of quality! There only so much you can work people before they start making mistakes.

There you go... you are the ideal customer Tim Cook is looking for.

All the things you listed are incremental updates in technology that have been evolving since well before Apple thought about jumping into the smartphone space. As technology evolves, you typically get more and more for less.

Tim Cook is getting more annoying by the day. This guy needs to stop talking so much. The more he talks, the more I'm happy to never buy anything from Apple again. He's either trying to be a political activist, or trying to badly imitate Steve Jobs, or just saying things that are stupid and frankly insulting. The iPhone X is expensive, and what he calls "value" to justify it is contrived BS. They are charging a lot for it because there has been such a long time since there was a new design and their customer base is starving for something new.
Last time I checked, the Note 8 and the phone X were very close in price (30 dollars or so). And I see by your signature you have a Note 8 and are complaining about how expensive the iPhone X is.

How is that possible? 33x24 = 792$.. what happened to rest 207$ before tax? Am I missing something?
