Americans, Whine about their cellphone bills being too high, have no problems spending 42 dollars a month on just the phone (999/24).

Or OMG my cable bill went up 5%, GREED.

IPhone goes up 25% OMG great value.

The solution to both the cell plan and cable rate hike whines is for Apple to offer both services themselves. Problems solved.

And where can I trademark the phrase: "Put an Apple logo on it"?

So now everyone buys their phones on monthly payments eh? Looks like they released the iPhone 8 so that they could justify the iPhone X price hike. I did buy the iPhone 8, however, because I don’t want to stare at my phone to unlock it.

"It's important to put it in that context," Cook said. "We price for the value we're providing. We're not trying to charge the highest price we can get or anything, we're just trying to price it for what we're delivering."

Apple is spending billions on secret R&D projects and it keeps spending more, is that why you charge over pricing elasticity?

I declare BS. Apple is a for profit corporation and thus will sell at the price that makes the most profit. Otherwise they are forsaking their responsibility to the share holders.

Tim Cook’s duty to the corporation, and its shareholders, is to responsibly manage the corporation. The officers and directors have a duty of loyalty and a duty of care. Even if those duties are construed as maximizing profits, it’s up to the corporation’s directors to determine over what period and in what ways they will seek to make a profit.

Over-pricing a product will lead to decreased sales and decreased profit and decreased stock value. That’s not a successful course toward long term growth.

The demand for Apple products shows that Apple is skillful in their price-setting. They are pricing, as Tim Cook stated, for the value they are providing.

not really.. i spend about $16 a day at coffee shops..

$33/month at 'nice coffee places'?
not very American imo.. that's only two days worth.

; )

I probably spend $30-40 a month on coffee, but I grind and brew at home. I have coffee everyday so if I spent $16 a day that would be $480 a month. Heck my truck payment is only $383 a month. You must be pretty well off to drop that amount on coffee every month.

How is that possible? 33x24 = 792$.. what happened to rest 207$ before tax? Am I missing something?
I don't know where he got that $33/mo number either. Verizon, using my carrier as one example, just divides the retail price into (24) payments:

$999.99 = $41.66/mo
$1149.99 = $47.91/mo

Oh wait ! He's talking about the iPhone 8+

$799.99 = $33.33/mo

Omg this is such an american way of thinking, no offense lol
Which part, the monthly cost or the comparison to coffee ? If you mean the monthly cost, the reality is, almost everyone with a wireless contract pays for their phone in installments (no interest, so what's the harm ?) vs paying for phones outright like done in Europe and elsewhere.

The issue is the more expensive the device itself becomes the more expensive the monthly rate becomes obviously.

Example: back in the day i could get an iPhone 4 for 1€ upfront on a 39€ plan which included the plan + the phone payment

Now its 299€ upfront + 49€ a month and that doesnt even include the plan itself yet!

Great. Maybe they can price the 11 at $2,000 or maybe $2,500? After all, just put ANY higher price "in the proper context" and it too can be an "incredible bargain." Hopefully Apple knows this and will significantly jack up all prices accordingly.

No need to worry... Based on the enormous number of iPhones Apple sells year after year, I think they have an excellent handle on the market and pricing.

April fools was many months ago, Tim.

Actually, he's spot on. Just look at the competition. Pixel2 XL costs almost as much, yet it's a technological embarrassment next to the X... and not just because of all the quality control issues. Apple's price also includes great support, as well.

Too many people equate price with value. Apple users, of all people, should understand and appreciate the difference.

The coffee analogy is fine; I am aware of plenty, my wife included, who spend $400-500 per month on Starbucks. Coffee has nothing to do with cell phones though.

At the end of the day, it’s all about perceived value. The X is either worth $1000, or $50/month to you, or it’s not. If it is and you want it, buy it. If it isn’t, or you don’t want it, don’t buy it. How much more simple does it get?

Last time I checked, the Note 8 and the phone X were very close in price (30 dollars or so). And I see by your signature you have a Note 8 and are complaining about how expensive the iPhone X is.
I'm not complaining that the X is expensive. I'm pointing out that Tim Cook is insulting his customers to suggest that it isn't. And FYI, it is a bigger gap from X to Note 8 when you consider the upgraded storage and Apple Care. And the X aligns feature and size wise with the S8, not Note 8... to use Tim Cook's line, the Note 8 has a lot more value. And, I got a $300 credit, and a Gear S3 for $300 off. The X is decidedly not a good "value" vs nearly any other phone. It's a nice phone, and a very expensive phone. Either Tim Cook is dillusional, or he's not being honest.

Cook nails it

When the price is put in its proper context iPhone X is an incredible bargain
Yeah for sure I mean only 1400$ with taxes for the 64gb and 1630$ for the 256gb is cheeeaaaap...... in dreamland and if you are wondering where this price exists, well in Europe for starters and secondly I see lots of people saying that the iPhone X costs only 999$ but thats false because this is without taxes.

I guess we all have different priorities, but then again where I live if you don’t own a vehicle your not getting anywhere. I don’t think I’d want to walk or bike to work 3 miles away when there’s a couple feet of snow and it’s 0 degrees.

it gets cold here too.. maybe not S.Dakota cold all the time but still :

(that's not running though.. not into that.. just walking)

to keep it forum-centric, more than half of that is carrying a 15"MBP around

Don't know what Apple calc app math Cook is using but here the price of coffee ranges from about $5 at Starbucks to about half that at McDonald's. So, $33 coffee is very uncommon.

Pretty sure he meant monthly. But apparently the obvious isn’t obvious to everyone

Monthly totals. $5 x 20 times a month= $100. $2.50 x 15 times a month = $37.50 etc..

#theydidthemath

And the coffee goes right through you whereas a phone you’ll use for hours a day for years. The experience of a coffee in my mouth doesn’t compare to the experience I get from using my phone
