Quite possible that may have been the business manager, Andrew, that helped me with my employee level issue as he took over the reservation line at about 2:30 and seemed to have been the most knowledgeable with the situation.
Oh Wow, I happened to score a Jet Black 256 7+ Verizon there too. 30min drive for me, and that store was so busy when we got there. There was a group of Asian resellers that were buying ridiculous amounts of 7Pluses and iPads. Good thing that I got assigned a nice specialist who said it would be easier for me to buy device only rather than do IUP for my reservation. I did not complain. This specialist also told me that they had a jet black shipment about 10-20 units (7 and 7+ total).

wow so there are JB's available for reservation??
 
For my BayArea, CA peeps, I was somehow able to buy a TMo black 7+ from the Apple Store app at Walnut Creek.

I am an ATT customer, not switching or anything. Picked "replace this phone with a new line". Chose pay full price, and that was it. Didn't ask me anything about any upgrade program or anything.

iStocknow shows the Walnut Creek store as red and zero stock on anything.

CC is fully charged and all. Not sure if this is a mess up or not. Will find out tomorrow.

there is no problem with that if you are paying full price.
 
So will I just go there and pick it up without any flack? Hope so!

i wass referring to him picking new line vs replace.
seems like 90% of folks are able to pay fp for the 1up program without a hassle.
i even ran across one guy who got flack in line from one employee- waited then found a new employee and got it:) seems doable if not risky.

there were at midnight. Atleast for this one store, but it was their grand re-opening and even at midnight they didn't have all options/colors available

man i've not seen any JBs anywhere in norcal using the 1up link

HUGE THANK YOU to everyone in this thread. Since 9/9 you guys helped me find the correct reserve link, when to check for stock. Just got back from snagging a 7+ Matte Black 256gb Verizon phone in store (on a whim checked today after being depressed by the lack of stock in the midwest and bingo). Super nice employees let me buy it outright no big deal to them. Popped downstairs to the Tmobile store got the sim switched. Now just to get my back up downloaded and it's smooth sailing from here. :)

Oh I know , Was about 100 miles away from home but had no issues in the store other than the specialist not knowing how to do a tmobile device and some scanner issues. But he got me all setup and going in no time. Walked me over to the training table and had all my iphones out to get my icloud stuff setup and test SIM. But all good it seems !

Got to redo my gamepass hack though :(
 
Here's my update of my goat rope today.

Reserved a 7+ 128 MB on the IUP link with a store 90 minutes from me. Drove there this afternoon for my appointment, and had no issues with being able to purchase on ATT Next even though I'm not in the IUP. BUT....

I didn't get my phone. Here's why. My 6s+, that I own outright had a Best Buy reservation against it.

I was gonna trade in my wife's 6+ for the new 7+ and give her my 6s+ that I owned outright. Since I had made 18 payments to ATT, I could give them the 6+ back, and upgrade.

Long story short, the ATT rep that I called said if you were doing a trade in on the NEXT program, you had to do it in a corporate ATT store. So, I paid off my wife's 6+, and wanted to use hers as planned. Except....the payoff info had not replicated for third party vendors such as an Apple Store. I was told it would take up to 24 hours before the Apple Store folks would be able to see that line released and ready for upgrade.

So, I called Best Buy and cancelled my preorder with them, hoping it would release my 6s+ line immediately. But no go. Looked like it's gonna take a while for that line to release as well.

So, they are holding the 7+ for me until the end of the day tomorrow. I'm gonna drive back after lunch tomorrow, and hope at least one of the lines is released and ready for upgrade on ATT Next. I really didn't think it would take that long for the released lines to proprigate through the system so that the Apple folks could see it.

Hopefully after another road trip tomorrow, I'll be done with this years release.

Note: Since I paid off my wife's 6+, and already owned my 6s+ outright, I was gonna enroll in the Apple IUP. Unfortunately, you have to have a straight credit card for that, and not a Visa debt card. The debit card is all I have, so I have to use ATT Next.

I'll update if all goes well tomorrow. Thanks to everyone providing info on this thread. You guys are awesome!

I was being handled by a former business manager. He seems a little shocked that i was getting a JB. Told me apple didn't start production on the JBs until a month prior to launch. Don't know how much truth there is to that, but I can believe it.
 
I have a second line that is preordered online and still processing. Can I reserve a phone on the IUP link while a phone is being processed? Once I get a confirmed reserved in store pickup I'll cancel on the online preordered from Apple.com.

Yes you can certainly do that and once reserved, you can cancel the pre-order online. I would however not cancel the one you pre-ordered online yet and I would wait till you get to the store and if they allow you to purchase it without being an iUP customer. It all depends on who you get, so play it safe.

Front door man wasn't going to let me leave without activating, asked to speak to the manager. Told them why was I charged and device paid for already, yet won't let me leave with the device.

Manager came out, saw the invoice order paid, said to give me the phone.

Full hour spent there even with paid device and reserved.

I have a question. I received my iPhone 7 on Friday the 16th. I am still within my 14 day return policy right? If I notice the Apple Store near me has a 7+ available, can I reserve and then come in and exchange the one I have now for that one?

On my purchase yesterday I was asked right from the start if I was doing IUP or just buying it outright. Some specialists just are more open than others.
